Colts hire Joe Philbin as offensive line coach

Earlier this week, there was a report that the Colts were reaching out to former Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin about being their offensive line coach.

The chances of that happening appeared to take a hit on Thursday when Philbin was reported to be heading to the Giants to be part of the staff Ben McAdoo, who coached with Philbin in Green Bay when both were assistants, is putting together. Either those reports were premature or the Colts did a heckuva selling job because Indianapolis announced that Philbin has joined Chuck Pagano’s staff.

The Colts cleared the way for Philbin this week when they parted ways with Hal Hunter. Philbin spent four years as either the assistant offensive line coach or the main position coach before getting promoted to offensive coordinator. He spent four years in that role and then became the head coach of the Dolphins in 2011.

While the Colts held onto head coach Chuck Pagano, they have made extensive changes to the roster of assistants. Hunter was one of seven let go since the end of the regular season. Philbin joins defensive coordinator Ted Monachino, linebackers coach Jim Herrmann and strength coach Darren Krein, who was on Philbin’s staff in Miami, as new arrivals.

I thought McAdoodledoo was hiring this guy? Guess he needed some space to avoud Coach Coughlin’s shadow…

Joe will take a leave of absence from his work as a grave digger to pursue the opportunity.

What a tool that guy is..

A loser and a coward. He never took any accountability for losses. Always put the blame on his players. And plus our OL was terrible under his watch. Good riddance.

    Dear Andrew Luck,

Good Luck. You’re gonna need it.

    Signed,

Good Luck with that hire, hope it works out!!!

One question, Why? Guy got the Miami job after riding off Rodger’s success and I don’t see anything that would make him a good candidate for an o-line coach. Not to mention the “bullying” scandal with Incognito and Martin happened under his watch, biggest o-line joke story in NFL history

  11. bakeberryjam says: Jan 15, 2016 6:33 PM

A Philbin-managed OLine is not one to trust, just ask Ryan Tannehill

  12. sunnydee007 says: Jan 15, 2016 6:44 PM

The Dolphins O-line was the worst in the NFL. Are they going to keep Vontae Davis around? Philbin is a bum.

I understand head coaches have a lot on their plate and are constantly being pulled in different directions, but I have a hard time believing Philibin can be a truly effective offensive line coach. The line down in Miami was constantly and issue and progressively got worse every year he was there, and not for lack of trying to get talent. RT James is the only real player that developed and he can’t stay healthy.

Passive Joe inspires nobody and then blames the players.

Philbin’s situation in Miami was doomed from the start, based on the way his authority was structured. No power over new personnel or the roster. No power to cut players, or acquire them. Horrible assistant coaches, his fault, and a QB he couldn’t stand. He was right about Carr.

It’s to bad, he was a great long term fit in Green Bay. Offensive Coordinator. When you don’t succeed as a Head Coach, its a big drop down the ladder, Offensive Line Coach. To make matters worse, the Colts offensive line sucks, and everyone is under the gun.

When it goes bad, its really bad…

    “Andrew, you are so screwed”

    Ryan Tannehill

Good for Philbin. As a dolphin fan I hope he does well for the Colts.

  18. goattoday says: Jan 15, 2016 7:27 PM

Looks like the Texans own that division for the foreseeable future.

  19. brianav036 says: Jan 15, 2016 7:31 PM

Good call the guy was an OC that never called plays and Miami had one of the worst offensive lines throughout his tenure in Miami. I guess it doesn’t matter until Grigson actually puts some talent on the line.

  20. megnailsit says: Jan 15, 2016 7:52 PM

So his O lines were terrible, it’s not like that’s an area the Colts have to worry about. Right? And if there were issues, Grigson always took care of them. 😆

  21. bucsorbust says: Jan 15, 2016 7:55 PM

J.J. Watt is thrilled with this hire, I’m sure.

  22. whodey83 says: Jan 15, 2016 7:58 PM

So how many articles are you going to release about Philbin taking jobs before you get it right? Is this one for real or is another one coming tomorrow?

  23. keylimelight says: Jan 15, 2016 8:20 PM

Joe Philbin. Wasn’t he the OC for Green Bay, a perennially winning Gree Bay, for a few years running?

His promotion to head coach might have been a good example of the Peter Principle at work. He advanced his career to a point of incompetence.

Joe Philbin might be just what the Colts need to stabilize Luck and get back on track.

Good Luck to him and all the “new” coaches. There’s a whole lot of same name, different team hirings this offseason.

  24. xpensivewinos says: Jan 15, 2016 8:57 PM

Must have been the glowing recommendations from Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin that got him the job.

“Average Joe” Philbin is a clueless mope.

  25. brianav036 says: Jan 15, 2016 10:22 PM

As a Dolphin fan I am not sure why there are so many negative feelings towards Philbin. He is a nice guy that was over matched as a HC. It’s not like Miami is stacked with talent. Look at how they performed with Campbell as HC. He even had the brains to recognize that Tannehill was not the answer 2 years ago. Where would Miami be if they had listened to him and drafted Carr?

  26. johnbokilo says: Jan 16, 2016 7:22 AM

This guy is a joke. He is beingbre-hired because he is white. What a joke!

Wishing the Colts all the luck they can have!

  27. captainwhodat says: Jan 16, 2016 8:17 AM

terrible HC but was a success in Green Bay whose offensive line deteriorated after he left…and shouldn’t the blame for the offensive line woes be placed on the offensive line coach and the simple fact that Tannehill is not, I repeat, is not a franchise QB…

  28. terripet says: Jan 16, 2016 8:32 AM

Great hire colts 14 2 next year

  29. billsrule2015 says: Jan 16, 2016 9:20 AM

Joe “Deer in Headlights blank stare all the time” Philbin!

I hear Jason Fox is available…

  31. jomo56 says: Jan 18, 2016 9:26 AM
