Packers force OT with Hail Mary to Janis

AP

It happened again.

Aaron Rodgers was on the run but lofted a Hail Mary pass on the final play of the regulation, and Jeff Janis caught it.

The Cardinals and Packers go to overtime tied at 20.

Dwight Freeney had a sack on the final drive that made it third and 20. Rashad Johnson got away with a lot of contact on Jeff Janis on the next play, but on fourth down Rodgers hit Janis on a deep ball.

The Packers were out of out timeouts. The Hail Mary covered 41 yards and came on a play snapped with five seconds left.

The Packers won earlier in the season on a Hail Mary in Detroit. Rodgers did it again with Randall Cobb out and no timeouts.

Janis had four catches all season. He has seven for 145 yards in this game. Due to penalty yards, he had two catches for 101 yards on the final drive.

  1. Unbelievable how these corners just don’t understand you can’t defend hail mary passes from behind the receivers. I have serious doubts if Janis truly possessed the ball, but the officials were never going to overturn that.

  2. There is not another QB in the league that could make that throw! Aaron Rogers is the best end of game QB in the NFL, perhaps ever.

Rather lose on a missed field goal than leave a great wideout like Fitzgerald wide open. Fitting end to a team that thinks it’s smarter than they really are.

  4. The injury plagued Packers did everything they could to win it, but they couldn’t beat the refs, injuries, and cardinals all at the same time. The better team lost today.

  5. And now look at Larry!!!!!

    There’s your Dagger choker fans…….

Provided by a Minnesota kid, born and raised,

Mn Viking ball boy growing up….

Hates the pack, and singlehandedly sent your team home…

    The world is right again.

  6. this is absolute garbage;

if you want Princess Rodgers in the super bowl against Princesses Brady or Manning, NFL, why not just say so?

oh, that’s right, you already did, back in Detroit when Green Bay were clearly beaten out of the playoffs before one of your blind stooges stepped in…

    bad as the old AFL was at times, they never resorted to shams like this;

  7. Loved the Hail Mary…look close at the replay as the ball hit the ground.

It was a make up call as the officials screwed the Packers over and over prior.

Yes. 10 come from behind 4th quarter drives to tie or win on 10+ years. He’s actually one of the worst…

  9. The Packers should have gone for 2 at the end of regulation. The officiating was ridiculously biased toward Arizona. I have never botched about officiating, but some of those calls and non calls were ridiculous.

What more can be done to give this game to AZ?

    These refs suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really? How can you see a play like that and have that be what you come away with. Just an incredible throw

  11. What a crazy, crazy game. Yeah, there were some missed calls and I surely wish they had not been missed, but calls are missed both ways in every game. The way to avoid that is to be winning convincingly enough that any missed calls won’t matter.

Fitzgerald refused to be denied at the end. All I can really say to that is kudos to Fitzgerald and the Cards in general.

  12. Losers? One and done? You Minnesota people are idiots. One and done would be your team. Losers would be your team.

GTFOH with your whining. Your team may have got lucky and won a division title, but the packers still got farther than you. You would have got blown out of you played the cardinals today with baby hands tossing 100 yards and AP fumbling.

  13. I couldn’t be prouder. There’s always next year, and they’ll be back. It sure was fun to watch. The fans at the game sure got their money’s worth.

  14. Teddy Bridgewater saw that 2nd Rodgers Hail Mary and still insisted Rodgers should have gone for the check down.

Great game and congrats to AZ.

  15. I seriously couldn’t be happier for Larry Fitzgerald, Carson Palmer and Bruce Arians. Those guys played their asses off. Our guys did too.

What a tremendous battle. Congratulations Cardinal fans.

  16. Patrick Peterson should be ashamed of his effort on that Hail Mary. The number one rule of a defender on a Hail Mary is to never let the receiver box you out. Good heavens how much is he paid?

  17. How many times must the wretched and hapless Packers team blow a lead to lose in the playoffs before their equally wretched fans realize that the team’s death spiral into has-been mediocrity is now in it’s third year? One….. And…. Done.

  18. What a game!!!!!!

And Costco has a sale on facial tissues. I suggest you stock up, it’s going to be a long wait until your Packers play again.

  19. Never should’ve been an OT. Janis clearly didn’t have control of the ball on the game tying TD.

It astonishes me that so many commenters here think GB was on the wrong end of poor officiating, because that simply wasn’t the case. On all of the alleged PI non calls the AZ defenders were guilty of nothing more than incidental contact. The Packers and their fans have gotten so used to receiving preferential treatment from the zebras that they scream bloody murder when they don’t get it. Witness the hysterical– and disgraceful– performance of Mike McCarthy tonight. In his insular little mind, every game should be officiated in the manner of the Thursday night injustice against the Lions. Thankfully, tonight’s game wasn’t.

Mike McCarthy is the new Tony Dungy, and Aaron Rodgers is the new Peyton Manning. If you want to beat them, you have to give 200%, because you have to beat the referees as well.

Only the Packers. Has any team in NFL history completed two game-winning or tieing Hail Mary’s in one season?

Sorry it only delayed the inevitable, Packers. Hurts, doesn’t it?
    ////////////////////////////////

Nope. Not with the kind of up-and-down season they had. They’ll draft heavy on receivers and contend again.

  21. Lucky take your meds you are delusional. Trying to punch the ball out which he didn’t accomplish after Janis gains control is on the ground and play is over is not a bobble. Now Fitzgerald ref gift was the definition of incomplete.

  22. The Cardinals aren’t good enough to win a SB with that type of performance. Green Bay looked like the better team all game long, while the Cardinals got a fluke tipped TD along with a bunch of favorable missed calls by the refs.

  23. Green Bay played their hearts out and left it all out on the field, Soooo proud of ’em! Great job AZ- you deserved the win. The Pack had their backs to the wall and were playing on house money- you guys hung in there and battled and won the game. Green Bay has nothing to be ashamed of- in fact- they exceeded my expectations. GREAT GAME CARDS!! GOOD LUCK IN THE PLAYOFFS! GO PACK GO!!!

  24. Great game – Congrats Arizona!!

That hail mary was awesome once again. We made it close, but didn’t finish. I”m not even that upset, that was a great way to end the season even if we didn’t win. If you weren’t entertained, you aren’t a football fan.

Haters can be haters. I’m still smiling either way.

  25. Why was that a catch ? He’s going to the ground and Janis never had true possession of the ball, you can see it moving out. He briefly has it before the Cardinal defender knocked it out. He didn’t complete the process of the catch. It was a great game, but what the heck is catch ?

  26. Better to be lucky than good right?
    ————–
Apparently you didn’t see the throw falling away with a defender in his face? Teddy Bustwater could only dream of throwing that ball 45 yards in that situation. And then the WR has to make that improbably catch????

Yeah, all luck. But nobody expects much from a Vikes fan when it comes to logic. You losers earned 50 years of no championships and choking in the SB.

  27. No complaints about officials. They let the players decode the game. Non calls on both sides all game long. It’s the way it should be.
    ===================
Please tell me which play the Packers defender pulls the WR’s hand down to prevent him from catching the football. I’ll wait.

  28. He didn’t complete the process of the catch. It was a great game, but what the heck is catch ?
    ———–
Apparently you didn’t notice his other hand between the ground and the ball when the ball was knocked loose for a second? You’d have a better argument if the ball ever hit the ground, but it didn’t.

  29. Is it me, or are Viking fans raging harder than usual?
Your team had a nice little season – by Viking standards. Your people should be happy.
    ——————–
I live in Minnesota. I can tell you first hand that Vikings fans have been besides themselves after Bert Favre and Adrian Peterson choked away the 2009 NFCCG only to watch Aaron Rodgers and the Packers win the SB the following year.

  30. This just proves how much better the packers are than the queens. No Jordy no Cobb no Adams no Montgomery and the packers get screwed by the refs and they still took one of the best teams in the NFL to OT. Hats off to Bruce Ariens and the cards!!! Can’t wait til next year when the Pack rule!

  31. Typical choke job by the packers! Why even throw a hail marry if you can’t win in overtime! Haha

Hope we don’t see those chokers in the playoffs for years to come!

    ________________________________

In all honesty, it actually feels pretty good. Arizona is a tough opponent and overall GB played a great game. GB was in the game ’til the very end.

Sure, it would have felt much better had GB won, but after that Hail Mary I told myself that whatever happened in overtime I would be okay with it. I was happy to watch an exciting and great game. Congrats to the Cards.

  33. Typical choke job by the packers! Why even throw a hail marry if you can’t win in overtime! Haha

    ———————————
Based on history…..your team won’t even be in the playoffs again. While the Packers will likely be going on 8 years in a row. Teddy Bustwater will never win a playoff game, that much is obvious.

  34. In Teddy We Trust says:

Are the Vikings the only team that knows how to defend a Hail Mary? If all of the defenders are behind the receiver, it isn’t that tough of a catch to make.
    ======
Great point. To be honest, I was kind of expecting the Cardinals to screw that up, and I wasn’t surprised that they did. I was also wondering why they didn’t put Fitz on the field for that play, especially in light of all the chatter about how the Lions should’ve put Calvin Johnson in to defend that last Hail Mary in week 13. I think you take your best WR and put him in the game, if you know it all comes down to a Hail Mary.

  35. especially in light of all the chatter about how the Lions should’ve put Calvin Johnson in to defend that last Hail Mary in week 13.
    ————-
Nobody, including the Lions coaches believed that any QB including Rodgers was even capable of throwing a Hail Mary 70 yards in the air. A QB like Teddy Bustwater would be lucky to throw it 50.

  36. The Hail Mary was a catch for two reasons.
    1. Janis caught and controlled the ball all the way down till he was laying on the ground, at which point he play is over as defenders made contact with him.
    2. Even thought the ball was punched (after Janis was already down) the ball didn’t touch the ground, Janis had his arm under it. Open your eyes.

Call this a lucky play if you want, this is the play that was called and executed perfectly twice in one season. Now score a TD off a deflection, THAT is the definition of luck, it could just as easily been intercepted or fallen to the ground.

  37. ven be in the playoffs again. While the Packers will likely be going on 8 years in a row. Teddy Bustwater will never win a playoff game, that much is obvious.

    ———————————————————————

Won’t win a game, Hmm the kids is young! For the packers start 6-0, lose the division, and now a collapse which they should have won!

    CHOKERS

Choke on that big cheese why don’t ya! That is just the start of bad things to come in choketown!

  38. The Janis TD was not a real catch as he did not have control of the ball to the ground. Once the Cards saw that, they punched it from laying on Janis’ stomach and it touched the ground while he did not have control of it.

It was an incomplete pass, but the NFL would never rule against Rodgers and the Packers, much less hyping all of this and adding to the NFL’s list of WOW plays.

Too bad for the cheaters that Fitzgerald took over the game and righted the wrong.

BTW, the refs refused to call ALL OF THE HOLDING that the Packers offensive line did during their time Rodgers was running around. So it was merely Justice that the Cards won even though Carson Palmer stunk it up and the Cards coaches were TOTALLY outcoached.

  39. First off, congrats Cards. Good game, and good luck the rest of the way. And kudos to Larry Fitzgerald….HOF’er and class act.

This was just a pretty good football game with an extraordinary final few minutes. Proud of the Pack for fighting through a rough season , and competing until the final whistle. McCarthy has some flaws as a coach (primarily clock management IMO), but he gets his guys to play for him and not use injuries as an excuse. I may even send him some McMuffins

The tiresome trolls on this site (of which the Vikings have a fairly large contingent – or at least a manic few with many screen names) love to rub salt in wounds……but the reality is this game doesn’t cause me any pain. I am a lifelong Packer fan – honestly can say losing this game does not hurt. Now Bostick’s boner, that hurt……. 4th and 26 hurt ….. Terrell Owens across the middle – after Jerry Rice’s fumble – hurt. This game just makes me appreciate football, and look forward to the Packers 2016-17 season.

And yeah I am aware there are several idiotic Packer trolls here on this site. Every team has a few (well, except maybe the Jags and Bucs). Just be aware your witty fresh takes mostly aren’t. For many, the more you post it becomes clear you really have nothing to say.

Every commenter here can try and elevate the discourse here…..or not. Free country.
Good luck to the teams/fans that remain in the hunt.

  40. Come on fellow Packer fans. Don’t blame the refs that is something losers (looking at you Minnesota) do!

We didn’t play well all season and we shouldn’t expect to turn it on in one game.

Be happy with a good year. Still did better than anyone else in the North.

Now that all of that is out of the way: someone needs to check Arians blood pressure. He was so red. He is going to drop dead on the sidelines before this post season is over.

  41. When I saw Clete Blakeman was the referee I knew the Cardinals were going to need a huge effort to win the game.
Mike McCarthy has gotten so used to getting calls from the referees he is becoming a disgrace. His hysterical antics should be highlighted. Give him the Jay Cutler treatment and stick a camera on him every minute. The NFL could charge a fee for an all game view of this Yinzer.

  42. Does anyone else find it hilarious the announcers spent 10 mins each play to examine why it was pass interference against the packers when they don’t even mention questionable calls for other teams.

So all the Green Bay fans that were thankful they got to play Washington…., does it really matter. 2nd in the division and watching the NFC championship on The couch with us Vikings. At least you don’t have Blair Walsh

Yeah, but we had a better record, won the division, have a higher draft pick, and are going into a beautiful new stadium that will host a Super Bowl. What did you Cheeseheads end up with? Not much. #JordyNelsonwontsavetheCheesers.

  44. I don’t think the ball ever hit the ground, even after it was punched out. How that was NOT a catch if the ball never hit the ground, i don’t know. What a great play by Janis.

It was embarrassing to see Fitzgerald run 75 yards…there were three defenders cornering him against the sideline with no blockers, and they let him cut back to the middle of the field. Inexcusable.

The truth is you advanced by winning against a JV team and you seem to forget that we played toe to toe against the Cards during the regular season in comparison to a team blown out 38-8 so we’ll never know if the Vikings could have beat the Cards in the post season, now do we? Furthermore, except for that final drive with Fitz, I just don’t think Carson Palmer or the Cards defense played well. I dunno, coulda been nerves since this was Palmer’s first playoff win ever, in all the years he’s played, so the pressure was huge. And luck had nothing to do with our division win–our defense decimated A-Rod with sacks and pressure and keeping him in the pocket so he couldn’t escape right, a sure recipe to beat the sorry Cheeseheads. Other teams take note.

  46. he maturity level of the Vikings fans is something all Minnesotans should be proud of. They always take the high road! LOL.

The Packers proved they belong in the playoffs. Arizona hopes that is their toughest game this post season. The game was decided on who made a play when it mattered. Viking fans act like it was a blow out. The viking fans dreaded the idea that the Packers were poised to pull out a victory. Viking fans fear.

Another thing for any fan to consider. The players don’t care about football near as much as fans do. The players consider it a job, they are not fans of the team. When they win, they do not celebrate with or for you. When they lose they do not feel bad for fans. It is all about the players and how much money they can make by going far in the game. That is it.

  47. I had no dog in this hunt but what a great football game. Somebody up there liked Arizona. The last two Rogers passes were unbelievable.
