Ravens hire Leslie Frazier to coach secondary

Leslie Frazier AP

The Ravens hired former Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier to coach their secondary Friday.

Frazier was the Vikings head coach from 2011-13. He spent the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Buccaneers.

Frazier becomes the second hire for the Ravens from Lovie Smith’s staff with the Buccaneers. Joe Cullen was hired as defensive line coach earlier Friday.

The Ravens are shuffling their defensive staff after linebackers coach Ted Monachino left to become the Colts defensive coordinator. Ravens defensive line coach Clarence Brooks is battling cancer, and the secondary has struggled the last two seasons.

Frazier joins offensive coordinator Marc Trestman and quarterbacks coach Marty Mornhinweg as former head coaches now working under John Harbaugh with the Ravens.

And now, after 9 years, he’s finally back to the level he is actually capable of coaching at. GL Frazier, absolutely great guy by all accounts, but not a HC and not a DC either.

Strategy #1: Place both safeties at goal line regardless of field position, as it is inevitable that the other team will move there.

Leslie Frazier is the man. What a solid dude, as a Vikings fan, Ravens players are going to love this guy, he is a players coach. Busted his knee early in the 85 Super Bowl playing on the best defense ever.

That being said, rough couple years as HC in MN. You can put that on Ponder or put it on whatever else you want, but I remember after Leslie was fired, he left Winter Park, rolled around the block than came BACK all in sight of cameras to speak to the media. Pure class.

Id love to shake that dudes hand and buy him a beer. If I were a Ravens DB, id be thanking the heavens this evening, he is the equivalent of a Non-Commissioned Officer speaking in Military terms, he EARNED his stripes one at a time.

Harbs has been great for former head coaches…gives them an environment to thrive in and then sends them back out to be a hc again…

Too many (former) Chiefs; not enough Indians. The Ravens are going backwards.

Past time for the tampa2 disciples to move on from an archaic defensive scheme. Good luck frazier.

Frazier had the exact same playoff record that Zimmer has.

Is you really want to talk about going backwards, stick with your own team. They’ve been doing this since 1972. lol

  18. tjacks7 says: Jan 16, 2016 9:36 AM

The Ravens DBs will be the best DBs in the league at letting receivers catch 2-5 yard passes and tackling them just after they pick up a fist down.

  19. eojtrid says: Jan 16, 2016 9:45 AM

Might not be able to string 2 sentences together, but wherever he’s gone the secondary has got a whole lot better real quick. Solid hire.

As a Bucs fan….wow, good luck. Actually surprised this guy got a job so soon. He seems like a good and decent man, but holy cow was he disappointing as DC.

Good luck Baltimore…named D-coordinator only to have play calling duties stripped in Tampa. The game has passed the Dungy disciples by, these guys just haven’t realized it yet

You delete a lot of my posts; your choice. But, my grandfather’s name and a first cousin’s name was Leslie, both men. Why do you permit such trash to remain on line?

  25. jollyjoker2 says: Jan 16, 2016 10:35 AM

  26. ahostiletakeover says: Jan 16, 2016 10:42 AM

Good pick up. Frazier was in over his head as a head coach and coordinator but is a good positional coach. Surprisingly, the Ravens’ secondary ranked in the top 10 of the league the second half of the season after being awful the first half. Hopefully the Frazier hire will keep them going in that direction. Now, put all the Ravens corners and safeties to work on the JUGS machines this offseason because they were pitiful in the interception department despite the overall improvement as the season progressed.

  27. tomtravis76 says: Jan 16, 2016 10:43 AM

There is no question who is in charge of the Ravens. Coaches and players come into an organization that puts you in a role and expects you to excel in that position. There is nobody trying to stab anybody in the back, nobody jockeying for position.
As capt Ron says,” do a good job, get a better job.”

Better pick on somebody that you have a chance at beating like the Broncos. Better leave those”Ratbirds” alone…..haven’t they beat you 3 times in a row….twice in that rathole you call home.

Funny how Dolphin fans can criticize other team’s moves when Signing Suh ensured the Phins would be a train wreck for years and years.

  31. tremoluxman says: Jan 16, 2016 11:10 AM

If the Ravens are going Tampa-2, they better get ready for a long, crushing season. That defense is a sieve and a recipe for losing.
I call it the Runaway Defense because the DBs always run away from WRs and TEs to give them a 8-12 yard cushion to catch a 3 yard pass on 3rd down. Watch the tape.

  32. sincewinningsuperbowlravenshavebeen3rdinafcnorth says: Jan 16, 2016 11:32 AM

@eojtrid… They didnt even play 3 times this season! Twice! And you got nerve talking about rat hole homes. Crappy mt bank stadium and that cesspool you call Baltimore is gross! Get yo popcorn ready and enjoy the Steelers trouncing of the donkeys tomorrow!

  33. sincewinningsuperbowlravenshavebeen3rdinafcnorth says: Jan 16, 2016 11:34 AM

Funny how baltimorons thought they ruined the Steelers season this year by beating us! Silly ratbirds.. we playing with house money now! Cheers! Enjoy the couch!

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of hate that spews across these pages. Anyway, Ravens, I wish you only the best. Coach Frazier is a good man and has a lot to offer your organization! GOOD HIRE!!!

  35. ravensaresuperior says: Jan 16, 2016 11:48 AM

Inside sources say that when the Steelers are eliminated on Sunday there could be a change at head coach and his undisciplined assistant coaches.

  36. thelionsarethejokeofthenfl says: Jan 16, 2016 12:03 PM

Good for him, that pitiful embarrassing Vikings organization’s toxic atmosphere ruined his rep. Baltimore will be good for him, plus the Ravens uniforms actually make the color purple look great for football. The Vikings have the ugliest uniforms in all of sports!

  37. eojtrid says: Jan 16, 2016 12:14 PM

In 2015 Your boys from Pittsburgh ( you know the ones who wear those silly looking Bumble Bee Get Up’s ) lost in January in Pittsburgh by the Ravens and were promptly excused from the playoffs and twice during this season. That is 3 times in a row my obtuse friend. Like I say concentrate on a team that you have a chance at beating like the Broncos …….and learn to count to 3.

  38. sincewinningsuperbowlravenshavebeen3rdinafcnorth says: Jan 16, 2016 12:29 PM

@eojtrid…. Oh ya. Forgot that is how you guys judge yourselves to us. Regular season wins and a wildcard win. Congrats on that. Lol. We count super bowls while u count regular season and a wildcard win as your super bowl. Don’t compare a sorry ratbirds franchise to the best franchise in all the nfl. You sound dumb!

  39. fmc651 says: Jan 16, 2016 12:38 PM

Great man good luck in Baltimore.

  42. filthymcnasty3 says: Jan 16, 2016 1:53 PM

Leslie Frazier went 0-1 in the playoffs, and Viking fans hated him.

Mike Zimmer went 0-1 in the playoffs, and Viking fans love him.

    Al Sharpton demands an explanation!!!!!!!

  44. lambeaudungbarn says: Jan 16, 2016 2:20 PM

He was in WAAAY over his head in Minnesota, but it should have been a learning experience.
I still have nightmares of him saying,”We have a lot of work to do”.

  45. trozenfundra says: Jan 16, 2016 3:42 PM

Has the Vikings stank wore off of him yet? I doubt it. That can take decades. Get ready to be torched by every QB you face next season Ravens.
