Broncos advance to AFC title game

DENVER, CO - JANUARY 17: Demaryius Thomas #88 of the Denver Broncos celebrates with Andre Caldwell #12 after scoring a 2-point conversion against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the AFC Divisional Playoff Game at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on January 17, 2016 in Denver, Colorado. If you’re not the sort of person who cottons to the hype machine that accompanies matchups between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, this would be a good week to catch up on that novel you’ve been planning to write.

It will be Manning and the Broncos against Brady and the Patriots in Denver next Sunday after the Broncos scored 14 straight points in the second half on their way to a 23-16 victory over the Steelers. The matchup for the AFC title will certainly feature a different Manning than we’ve seen in most of the 16 previous games featuring the two quarterbacks, but the Broncos were able to survive just long enough to take advantage of a big Steelers mistake.

A week after a Jeremy Hill fumble opened the door to a Steelers win in Cincinnati, running back Fitzgerald Toussaint’s fourth quarter fumble gave the Broncos a chance to shake off a dismal offensive day in time to win the game. Manning hit Bennie Fowler for 31 yards on a key third down and C.J. Anderson scored the only Denver touchdown of the day to give the Broncos their first lead since the first quarter.

It held up when DeMarcus Ware sacked Ben Roethlisberger on fourth down of the next drive. Brandon McManus and Chris Boswell would trade field goals, but Boswell’s onside kick was recovered by the Broncos to end the game. Roethlisberger was sacked three times, but his right arm didn’t seem too diminished by his shoulder injury as he went 24-of-37 for 339 yards. Martavis Bryant had nine catches for 154 yards and a 40-yard run as he did his best to cover for the absences of Antonio Brown and DeAngelo Williams, but the fumble and some poor special teams play in the first half helped the Broncos to points that the Steelers couldn’t match.

Manning ended the day 21-of-37 for 222 yards. His numbers would have been better if not for several drops by his receivers, although Manning also got the benefit of a questionable call by the officials that he did not give himself up when he dropped to the ground to avoid a Steelers defender and then stood up to deliver a pass to Emmanuel Sanders for 34 yards. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin argued that Manning gave himself up, but that’s not reviewable so the play was allowed to stand. The Broncos would go on to punt on that drive, which lessened the impact of what surely would have been a major talking point of the week had Manning’s possum impression done more to swing the game.

There were none of the interceptions that plagued Manning in the regular season, but the offense was just as ineffective through three quarters as it had been at any other point this year. That left it to the defense to make a big play and Bradley Roby provided it when he separated Toussaint from the ball. That’s been the formula that Denver rode to the top seed in the AFC and one more round of it will send the Broncos to the Super Bowl.

Yeah, just watched that, neither of those teams deserve to be in the AFC championship game but I guess someone has to play NE. Maybe give the chiefs another crack at it?

No help from the officials dooms the Steelers. Face facts Steeler fans, your team just wasn’t good enough to beat a gimpy, hobbled, ancient Manning. Now watch how the Pats take care of business in Denver.

So tired of watching the Pats play in the Super Bowl. Pats are going to give the Broncos a whooping next week. Broncos are probably better off with Curtis Painter in there

I can only hope the Panthers give the Pats a prison beating worse than the one the Hawks gave to the Broncos a couple years ago in the Super Bowl and end that disgusting, cheating, despicable teams run for good.

So 2 of the 4 teams still in the playoffs have owners in a three person committee in charge of how much Goodell makes each year. Nothing funny about that but then again that’s why NFL football is considered “entertainment”.

Look at the final four. Three number one picks and Brady. Hats off to John Elway. He builds a team like he’s played in big games. He knows you need a great QB, some pass rushers, and excellent cornerbacks. And he loads up on those key positions.

  24. grogansheroes says: Jan 17, 2016 8:06 PM

I must have seen this 100 times over the last fifty years. Teams come into Denver and outplay them for 3 quarters. Then in the 4th quarter visiting teams start to wear down. Strange things happen in the Broncos favor. Biggest home field advantage in professional sports.

  25. TeeHeeLOLatPatsHaters says: Jan 17, 2016 8:06 PM

Well officiated game, no questionable calls. Clean game.

Good luck to the Broncos next week. I personally am routing the rest of the way for Peyton.

Small Ben in Big Games strikes again hanging a sweet, sweet, 16 points (13 when it mattered) in a big game. Too bad it’s not the good old days when the Steeler defense could carry Big Bum on its back and drag him kicking and screaming across the finish line to a 13-12 win.

It was a last second miracle win last week when the Steeler defense held the Bengals to 16 points and handed Big Bum 4 turnovers. That’s just how good Big Bum is.

And of course don’t forget last year when Big Bum hung a sweet, sweet, 17 points in a home playoff loss to the Ravens.

  45. Deb says: Jan 17, 2016 8:09 PM

Congratulations to the Broncos. Exciting, clean game. Great to see the players and coaches talking and exchanging handshakes afterward. I’m especially relieved not to be worried whether my Steelers will get out of Denver safely.

Couldn’t be prouder of my team. They stepped up in adversity and made this a competitive game down to the wire. Thanks to the QB for getting shot up and taking the field. The defense did an awesome job.

Manning may have lost some mobility with age, but that play where he slid down then jumped up and completed the pass shows he’s still one of the savviest guys in the league. Good luck next week with the Pats!

  46. steelerstrong says: Jan 17, 2016 8:10 PM

So proud of the Steelers for the season they had. Fighting through tough injuries and coming a half of a quarter from the AFC Championship game. All the sarcastic comments on this thread are from fans of teams in this division that didn’t get this far. Jealousy is an ugly thing. Best of luck to Denver. Well played.

  47. xxsweepthelegxx says: Jan 17, 2016 8:10 PM

I’m just going to enjoy this last Brady vs Manning match up of my lifetime. I’ve been fortunate to see all of their matchups and there have been some damn good ones. I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

It’ll be a sad day when these two fantastic QBs hang em up.

  48. dodgerlakerfan1969 says: Jan 17, 2016 8:10 PM

Writer forgot to mention how Sanders saved Peutons bacon on the likely INT by William Gay. That was a huge play and could have swung the game back to the Steelers. Peyton played ok but not great. Luckily for him with his defense he doesn’t have to be great to win now. His 74 passer rating today is the worst for a winning QB this postseason.

  49. mrloser444 says: Jan 17, 2016 8:10 PM

Bradley Roby saved the Broncos season.

  51. jesusfreak063 says: Jan 17, 2016 8:10 PM

  52. uramoronfrommoronika says: Jan 17, 2016 8:10 PM

How can an NFL player be so careless in a playoff game on such a critical play?Toussaint would have had the first down and kept the drive alive. It was like someone trying to strip the ball never even crossed his mind. With two defenders closing in and at the first down line, two arms on that ball tight, expect a ripout attempt. Most Pop Warner players know better. It’s gonna be a long, long off season for that young man. Hopefully he will recover mentally from this crushing blunder.

He is the most overrated post season QB ever. I expect the Pats will win next week. I must say that Ware actually made a play, actually 3, in the 4th quarter. That’s more than you can say over the decade he was in Dallas.

Any loss to the Lakers ,Canadians ,Yankees and any team led by either Manning stings just a little bit more. However no matter what happens next sunday the Brady/Peyton comparison was decided in TB12’s favor long ago .Just the fact that Brady/Belichick are trying to go back to back twice in their careers is amazing .

Well, the Roger Goodell led NFL/WWE got just what it wanted, Manning back in the AFC Championship game against Brady. The Patriots better win by three touchdowns because they don’t stand a chance in a close game. The league will have the officials do everything in their power to have the Broncos win and the Patriots lose. Just look at the game the Patriots played in Denver in the regular season. There were a half a dozen bogus calls/non-calls, all in Denver ‘ s favor, giving Denver the win, and subsequently putting this AFC Championship game in Denver instead of Foxboro. If you haven’t been paying attention, Goodell will stoop to any means necessary to bring down Brady and Belichick, including lying and putting a completely bogus case against them in a federal court. Berman even got the NFL lawyer to admit in open court they had no proof against Brady, which conviently gets ignored by the media and the haters. If you think I’m going overboard, think like Goodell. If the Patriots won the Superbowl and he has to present the trophy to Kraft. Belichick and Brady, it will be a moment of complete humiliation in front of the entire WORLD.

Typical loss by Steelers under Tomlin….they were the better team but
they just let it slip away by no attention to detail. The Steelers really
dominated on defense. Offensively they could not finish. Early on the 4th and 1 …Heath Miller is wide open underneath..Ben over throws in end zone. Ok on 3rd down ..not so good on 4th down.
Ben is a great player…but his lack of attention to detail is why Brady
( who now is less talented than Ben ) is in the championship. During
a game Ben ..shakes the bad plays off …saying to himself …next series ..next series …until game is over. I think Ben is a great talent but I hope his career …won’t be characterized by …next year..next year. Bottom line…..the Steelers had the talent to get to this year’s Super
Bowl and they let it get away.

Analysis of officiating is part of every game win or lose. Denver did benefit from very lax enforcement of of some rules:

    a) 3 pretty obvious pass interference penalties against Denver were not called – two of them in the end zone – one on Wheaton and one on Bryant. Also, one against Heath Miller not called.
    b) Manning clearly gave himself up on that play avoiding the sack. I’m sorry when you fall down and go into turtle mode you have given yourself up. Anyone hits Manning in that position will be penalized and fined.
    c) flagrant fair catch interference not called. Particularly annoying since the Steelers were hit with multiple close fair catch interference calls this season.
    d) group celebration penalty not called against Denver. Steelers got hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty last week for a nearly identical end zone group celebration (Willie Gay anyone).

Just some observations. Steelers had every chance to win this game despite the above so none of them are game changers. Just some commentary.

Nobody cried for the Broncos when, despite being absolutely crippled by injuries, they rolled through the AFC field a couple years ago.

Note to delusional Chiefs fans: There wasn’t a single second of your ‘real AFC Championship’ where any objective observer considered the Chiefs a threat to win. The Pats barely broke a sweat in a game not nearly as close as the score. No worries, though. History indicates that you might get another shot in the Divisional round in, oh, about 2041.

P.S. The Steelers showed more heart today than the always overrated Chiefs have shown in the last 40 years. Y’all wouldn’t know a thing about competing in and winning a meaningful dogfight.

How can an NFL player be so careless in a playoff game on such a critical play?Toussaint would have had the first down and kept the drive alive.

Peterson.. smh, even HOF type backs fumble, credit the play and the fact that it was made easier by the loose handling of the ball.

Brady can handle the Broncos Defence.

Goodel, Blandino & the Refs will give the game to Manning for three reasons

1.) Manning is Goodel’s Pretty Boy (HGH)
2.) Broncos are easy win for Cam in SB (should they make it)
3.) Goodel could not bear to hand the Lombardi to Tom Brady = AGAIN!

That whole stadium showed up for a victory party and instead will set a record for washing dirty their dirty underwear.

Unfortunately all you idiots did was block the one team that could’ve stopped New England from reaching the Bowl with a healthy Antonio Brown playing them next week. Nice job, morons.

If there’s justice in the world New England gets blown out in the Bowl.

I grew up not far from the site of Shaeffer / Foxboro / Gillette and a Patriots fan of course, but I watched every Steelers, Dolphins, Niners, and Packers game on TV that I could. I mean, if you are going to watch a game played by professionals why wouldn’t you want to enjoy seeing how the game should be played and coached? I was hoping Pittsburgh would win today, but I’ll take one more Manning Team vs Brady Team for the AFCC.

  184. openfieldtackle says: Jan 17, 2016 10:19 PM

Not a Tomlin fan with his game management. Why he did not use timeouts when the Broncos had the ball at the goal line I’ll never understand.

To give him credit. He did lose the starting LT, Center, RB and for today in addition the AFC player of the year and the starting RB.

They were not the best team this year but when healthy the offense was very good and defense improved all year. A couple DB’s and they will compete again in 2016.

  185. nodindenver says: Jan 17, 2016 10:28 PM

Just got back from the game which is more than can be said for a lot of fan bases. A couple observations. Steeler’s fans are amoungst the classiest around as this tilt was closer than many thought and their O-line fought hard tonight. I can also tell Pats fans are flooding this vine. Worried?? I do not have a feeling as to what will happen next week but, make no mistake, I would be much more concerned had the Pats been able to take care of business and game were to be held in the Razor. I do know that the 76,000 strong at Mile High wanted next week to include Brady and the Pats for a chance in Santa Clara. This season, the Broncos play for the fourth quarter and keep all of us on the edge of our seats. I expect nothing less in the AFCCG at Our House!

  186. mrloser444 says: Jan 17, 2016 10:41 PM

Pats lost in Denver last time only because a rookie muffed a punt, and that Pats team was depleted compared to what they are now.

Had NE not been devestated by injuries and have to deal with bogus calls by the refs ( the entire media sided with the Pats on that one) we would have one the game in the regular season too in your house.

The number one seed in the AFC — who had a bye and played at home — barely beat a decimated Steeler team who had nothing to lose. I would be a bit worried if I were a Broncos fan. Steelers played them tough and have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Good season, boyz. With a good draft and some better luck with health, you’ll be right back in it next season.

  197. coloradotennisfan says: Jan 18, 2016 12:24 AM

The Patriots should be clear favorites in the AFC Championship game. The Patriots had some key injuries in the November game. The Broncos have an anemic offense. Between dropped passes, poor throws, and inappropriate play calling, the Broncos offense looks like a sub 500 team.

If the Broncos can keep the game close, they have a chance in the fourth quarter. I doubt that they can keep the game close enough to matter.

The game could play out differently so I would not call the Patriots overwhelming favorites. Unless the Broncos offense can play much better, the Patriots will win.

  198. bobhpine says: Jan 18, 2016 12:25 AM

I guess Peyton needs to get embarrassed by Brady to end it all. The officials in that game were absolutely horrible, they did absolutely everything to hand him that game. Holding, PI, synchronized dancing after a sack…no calls…and that’s to say nothing of the play where Manning falls down to avoid taking a big hit and they let him get up and throw the ball after the D stopped…because usually when a QB gives himself up the play ends. Shameful.

New England might win by 35 next week. 18 can’t throw the deep, can’t throw to the sideline, can’t throw anywhere unless it’s a lollipop.

I also find it funny that Bengals fans say Burfict killed the Steelers. I guess you fools missed the end of the game last week. Burfict is the reason the Steelers were even still alive in the first place. LOSERS.

Five takeaways from the Denver game:
    1. Steelers can’t beat the Ravens at home
    2. Steelers can’t beat the Ravens on the road.
    3. Without ridiculous officiating, Steelers can’t win a playoff game.
    4. Without Cleveland and the Jets completely imploding, Steelers don’t get into the playoffs.
    5. Big Ben is incapable of leading this team to another Superbowl and people are tired of him being a drama queen especially the second greatest coach of all time, Brian Billick.

Five takeaways from the Denver game:

    1. Steelers finished 10-6 despite underperforming against the Ratbirds twice this season.
    2. Steelers made the playoffs despite losing to some crappy teams this year including the lowly 5-11 Ratbirds.
    3. Steelers beat the 12-4 AFC North champions on the road while the Ratbird fans brag about having a higher draft pick than the Steelers.
    4. Steelers played the #1 seed in the AFC on the road in the divisional round and came within 1 fumble of winning the game despite a ton of significant injuries. While Steeler fans were enjoying another great playoff game, Ratbird fans were arguing about new defensive coaches wishing Ed Reed was hired as secondary coach instead of Leslie Frazier.
    5. Despite recent playoff struggles Steelers Big Ben is the main reason the Steelers are making the playoffs and at the same time Joe “Unibrow” Flacco is a bigger cap hit on the Ravens then Big Ben is on the Steelers.

  206. bobzilla1001 says: Jan 18, 2016 12:58 PM

Big$Ben’s offenses have scored 15, 18 and 16 points in the Steelers’ past 3 postseason games. Roethlisberger was paid $30 million this season. He threw 21 TD passes and 16 picks in 12 games. Money well spent, right?
Against the Broncos, the offense generated 1 TD. Yet the local media are blaming the defense for not creating turnovers.
This is how it is in Pittsburgh, the QB gets most of the money, while the defense gets all the blame for losses.
When are people going to wake up?
