In 2008, Lionel Vital was one of the first hires made by Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff. Eight years later, Vital is the first major change the team has made in the wake of a recent indication from owner Arthur Blank that adjustments are coming.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Falcons have parted ways with Vital, who elevated from national scout to director of player personnel. Along the way, he was interviewed for the G.M. job in Tampa.

Vital had been an important part of the organization, with a keen eye for talent and a longstanding relationship with Dimitroff.

Vital has 25 years of experience in scouting and player personnel, working for teams like the Ravens, Patriots, Jets, and Browns. A running back as a player, he was a seventh-round pick of Washington in 1985.

  1. I’m a diehard Falcons fan and as much as the pains me to say this but another year like we had this year and I’d highly consider a total makeover from top to bottom. Deshaun Watson would do us we’ll send matty ice out the door for a couple first and use those three first rd picks to snag Watson next year and rebuild this roster .

WOW! You think any team will give up TWO, first round pick for Matt Ryan??? Falcons may get something for him but the dead money it would cause to your salary cap would be brutal.

A couple of firsts? Stop. So let me get this straight. Somebody is going to take on Matty Ice’s 20 mil a year cap hit AND give you 2 1st round picks for the honor? Stop. The only teams that would NEED Matty Ice are the teams picking early in the draft, and why on earth would they not just draft a qb themselves and have 4 years of a relatively low cap hit on a rookie contract and the HOPE that that pick turns out BETTER than Matty ice.

Let me rephrase. I can take a 30 year old Matty Ice at 20 mil cap hit or draft Watson (instead of trading for Matt Ryan) and have a cap hit of 4 mil per year with room to build around him.

    Ok. good luck with that.

  4. I get a laugh out of the get rid of Matt Ryan ppl, That is the most absurd thing to say. He has had one bad year in 8 years and he was still ranked the 9th best QB in the league this year. For you morons that means there are only 8 better QB’s in the league right now, and you know you are not getting one of those. Why would you start over with an unproven rookie instead of keeping the best QB the Falcons have ever had. Before this year under a totally different OC , running a totally different offense than he has ever ran he was always in the top 5 QB’s.
