Pete Carroll: Down 31-0, everyone in the locker room thought we’d win

Getty Images

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says he and every one of his players believed they were going to beat the Panthers today, even when they were losing 31-0 at halftime.

“There wasn’t a guy in the locker room who didn’t think we were going to win the football game. There wasn’t a word in that direction for a moment. The demonstration of what happened in the second half proved it. These guys totally believe that they can do whatever they’ve got to do, they believe in each other,” Carroll said after the game.

Although the Seahawks ended up losing 31-24, Carroll said he believes his team was poised to win the game and would have with just a little more time.

“We just ran out of time. There wasn’t quite enough time,” Carroll said. “Unfortunately it was a terrible start and we just didn’t have enough time to overcome it.”

The Seahawks showed a lot by playing well in the second half. Just not enough to win.

This is 2 times in the last month that carolina has built up a huge lead only to barely hang on and win (Giants game). You still have to like carolina but they need to learn how to put their foot down a little bit better.

Knock it off Petey. If you were going to win, you should not have been down 31-0 at halftime. Carolina has problems hanging onto leads sometimes. It had nothin’ to do with the chicken hawks during the second half. You and your players have to get over themselves.

  29. suhmonster90 says: Jan 17, 2016 4:57 PM

Pete the Cheat musta spiked the Gatorade with Russell Juice at halftime. Couldn’t be happier that the luckiest team in football finally lost. Only wish the second half would have been as much as a butt whoopin as the first half. Would have liked to see the Shehawks and the most annoying fans in football have their spirits crushed as badly as the stupidest pass in football history in the Super Bowl last year.

  37. seacougvegas says: Jan 17, 2016 5:04 PM

We should’ve won easily. Unfortunately Bevell wanted to feed Marshawn right off the bat and EVERYONE in the stadium knew it was coming. 5 yard loss and pick 6 on first 2 plays. Carolina is having a magical season but I think the Cardinals are gonna destroy them next week

  38. tyelee says: Jan 17, 2016 5:06 PM

  39. shlort says: Jan 17, 2016 5:07 PM

The entire second half was garbage time. The Panthers played just enough to run the clock. Had Carolina wanted, they could have hung 60 on the board.

Seattle has pretty much started the decline. The cap and luck has run out. Maybe some of the arrogant fans will shut up for awhile? Doubt it, they are like Vikings fans. Too stupid to know.

  48. r502 says: Jan 17, 2016 5:11 PM

Seattle was given a gift even playing the game, it took a kicker messing the bed for them to even participate today.
Seahag fan, the window is closed. No more bargain contracts for your best players, more depth will be stripped away come free agency. The O line is a joke, journeymen playing RB, Lynch is gone, Sherman and Thomas got paid and are playing to see the end of their deals. Jimmy Graham doesn’t fit, Chancellor will again become a contract distraction and the D line is a year older and slower. It will be a pleasure seeing the bandwagon with plenty of seats to be had as obnoxious 12th sham fans going back to whatever it is they were doing a couple of years ago.

A lot of hate on here for the Seahawks. This is despite them showing great heart and poise in tough situations. Faced with a tough start they fought their way into the playoffs. They also kept faith and played hard in a number of playoff games during the last couple of years where it would have been easy to feel defeated and let up.
Personally, even as a Vikings fan, I thought it was refreshing to see them show such perseverance. They do not get out of control like the Steelers and Bengals game last week. They do not get down. They just keep playing to win.
It is certainly a good example on how to work through adversity. I was not happy to have them beat my team in the playoffs, but I will say that the team has earned my respect as an opponent, and I feel a lot of this hate is unwarranted.

  86. hawkforlife says: Jan 17, 2016 5:59 PM

  87. minnescrotums says: Jan 17, 2016 6:03 PM

Actually they gave up 14 points because Wilson panicked and threw two passes right to Carolina defenders.

Pete Carrol is as dilusional as everyone thought he was. Carolina being up 31-0 they knew they had the game. Hence why Newton only had 164 yards on the game, they ran the ball to run out the time.

Now the Seahawks can go home where they belong, and hopefully someone takes the gum away from Pete next year so he doesn’t look like Mr Ed chewing on a carrot.

Seahawks are lucky that the Vikes beat themselves last week. It won’t happen going forward, this team is built for the long haul.

Whoever wins between the Cards and the Panthers I will be rooting for in the SB. Congrats to those 2 teams for a hell of a season, and also sending those 2 whiny organizations home where they belong.

  100. discosucs2005 says: Jan 17, 2016 6:49 PM

In games like this it’s easy to fall into the trap of “if only they got a better start…” and assume that the losing team that almost came back was actually pretty close talent wise. If you watched the entire game tho, and know a decent amount about football, you would have seen a Carolina defense that knew they had a lot of opportunities to try and force turnovers in the first half that they didn’t attempt in the second half, trying more just to slow the game down; and a Carolina offense that was getting what it wanted through the air, and opening up the run, that decided to take its time in the second half. They let it get close because the Seattle defense made the stops it needed to, but if they had been going full force the entire game, it’s hard to imagine it would have been this close.

  101. ad28bestever says: Jan 17, 2016 6:50 PM

Had it not been for a fluke miss by Walsh, we would have played the Cards, and the Vikes played them much harder than GB did, and we were missing half of our defense.

Which means GB would have played Carolina. Can you imagine the beating Carolina would have put on GB? That game would have been more like 38-7.

Carroll is so full of baloney. Anyone who buys that he and his players thought they’d win when they were down 31 to 0, well, I have a bridge to sell you.

I, for one, am sooo happy we don’t have to look at Carroll pacing up and down the sidelines chomping on his gum and whining about every call the officials make against his Seahawks.

So Seahawks fans, it was a noble comeback effort, but I’m glad it failed. Pete Carroll is as nauseating as Jim Harbaugh was, and it’s great that he’s out of the playoffs.

Packers/Seahawks may be top 3, but Steelers beat them both. A Denver win would complete the hat trick,

  112. bears5683 says: Jan 17, 2016 7:35 PM

There were at least 3 regular season games (Giants, Packers and Colts) where the Panthers jumped out to big leads only to give all or most if it up, but still pull it out at the end. It was almost overly predictable going into the 2nd half. Should be a great NFC Championship, between 2 very deserving teams.

  113. stampnhawk says: Jan 17, 2016 7:53 PM

5 more minutes and Seattle wins. Not recovering the fumble on the second play and then the Wilson turnover, and that was a bug point in the game.
Also doesn’t take too much to get Newton irate, yelling at the coaches.

    Go Cards and Broncos.

It’s hilarious to me how many comments there are here about us Seahawks fans always claiming “dynasty”. I never claimed it, and I rarely ever see it claimed. We all know one Lombardi maketh not a dynasty, people! At least we made it interesting. Congrats to the Panthers! GO HAWKS!

Much respect to Seattle for not laying down after getting the stuffing kicked out of them in the first half. Carolina holds their destiny in their own hands, play your game and win the SB.

I’m surprised by the comments or maybe I shouldn’t be. What were they supposed to think? Just accept defeat and give up? That’s what most teams would have done but not the Seahawks and it showed in the 2nd half.

But I guess most in the comments have a quitters mentality which is why they have the opinion that they shouldn’t think they can still win.

  131. jmw2006 says: Jan 18, 2016 12:16 AM

    @ReligionIsForIdiots

Play the game at 4:30 instead of 1:00 and the Panthers won’t score but once. Who the frig wants to play football at 10:00 a.m. That’s what their body clock game time is. No excuse, but the NFL/TV stations should take that under consideration.

  132. prs250player says: Jan 18, 2016 1:10 AM

Absolutely LOVE all the Seahawks haters! Regardless of today’s loss, the fact remains, that in the last 4 years, Seattle has been the most successful team in the NFL. Four straight playoff appearances, 7 post-season wins versus 3 losses, 2 NFC Championships, and 1 Super Bowl win.

Now, that may change this year depending on what New England does next week. But for the trolls on here who are, once again, predicting Seattle’s demise simply because they did not make it to their third straight NFC Championship Game or third straight Super Bowl, trying to play Nostradamus will not change the fact that Seattle is poised to be a serious contender for years to come. Thomas Rawls will take over nicely for Marshawn Lynch next year, Jimmy Graham will be back, and John Schneider and Pete Carroll will have yet another successful draft and work on fixing the offensive line.

You can bitch and whine about Seattle’s arrogant fans. You can complain about Seattle’s “classless” players. You can call the team and us fans any names you’d like. But, unless you’re fans of New England, you’re just jealous! And it’s freakin’ hilarious!!! Yes, some teams out there have storied histories, but it’s just that — HISTORY! Seattle has had the same core of players in place for the last 3-4 years and will have them for a few more. They will be back next year and will be just as dangerous, if not more! And you all can’t stand it so you make weak, baseless predictions to try to make yourselves feel better!

Keep it up. It just makes us obnoxious, band-wagoning Seattle fans smile!

  133. conormacleodisloosebutthole says: Jan 18, 2016 3:54 AM

hawkforlife- shouldn’t your name be hawk for the last four seasons?

  134. jgedgar70 says: Jan 18, 2016 9:22 AM

I understand what Pete was saying. These guys watch game tape. They knew that the Panthers were totally destroying Indy, GB and NY and let all or most of those big leads get away. They also knew that we had big leads against the Cowboys, Redskins and the last game vs. Tampa, but those teams didn’t have enough talent to overcome the deficit in spite of the fact that we were playing at half-speed. And as much as I hate to give Troy Aikman any credit, he correctly pointed out that the Seattle offense is built to score quickly, making a big comeback more likely than a team like the Panthers, who do have big plays but primarily are a running team.

So I understand why the ‘Hawks were optimistic. I’m just glad the lead was too much for them to overcome.

  135. allaroundsportsfan says: Jan 18, 2016 12:19 PM

umm… what’s he and the players suppose to think or believe? I appreciate a coach’s positivity, self-belief, and candor. The Seahawks are fine. Good organization, coach, and players.

With that said… Go Panthers. Keep Pounding! Rep the NFC!
