Report: Eagles want to hire Steve Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator

The Eagles were reportedly hot on the trail of Ben McAdoo before the Giants hired him as their new head coach and they spoke to McAdoo’s predecessor Tom Coughlin before ultimately deciding to hire Doug Pederson.

Their interest in all things 2015 Giants may not be over, however. Les Bowen and Marcus Hayes of the Philadelphia Daily News report that the Eagles are interested in hiring Steve Spagnuolo as their defensive coordinator.

Spagnuolo and Pederson were both assistants under Andy Reid with the Eagles, although they didn’t work for the team at the same time. Spagnuolo moved on to his first stint with as the Giants defensive coordinator in 2007 and promptly won a Super Bowl ring that helped propel him to a three-year run as the head coach of the Rams.

His return to the Giants in 2015 didn’t go nearly as well, although the Giants reportedly want to bring him back and can block Spagnuolo from moving to¬†any other team for a coordinator job.

Hey Eagle fans! Hope you like what your offense will be next year, after the chiefs got slammed. Eagles have no QB or coaching staff.

Why is everybody fighting over this bum?

His defenses are consistently in the bottom 10 in the NFL.

The Eagles have Weapons on the D-Line and the LBs but problem is there a 3-4 Team. Spaggs is a 4-3 coach

Yeah, I think I quit being an Eagles fan. I refuse to believe that a combo of Pederson and Spagnuolo is going to produce a playoff team.

His defenses in New Orleans (2012) and New York (2015) have been horrible, not just bad but historically bad. Why anyone would want to hire him for this position is crazy.

  6. tommyribs says: Jan 17, 2016 2:18 PM

    Screw the Eagles.

  7. atwatercrushesokoye says: Jan 17, 2016 2:19 PM

If I’m the Giants I’m definitely giving him the opportunity to take a job with one of our rivals. I might toss in a late draft pick to go with him. He might be the worst DC in football right now.

Lol that’s the ticket. Pick up the architects of that vaunted chiefs O and the fearsome nyg D.

  9. axespray says: Jan 17, 2016 2:24 PM

Spagnuolo is the Matt Flynn of defensive coordinators.

Dude is still getting hired based on his 07 defense that happened to have 3-4 elite pass rushers.

Rob Ryan ran the Saints D better than this clown

What is this Eagles fascination with NYG coaches?

  13. cmfischer says: Jan 17, 2016 2:28 PM

What else can Philly do to rekindle that mid-2000s nostalgia? I hear Jeff Garcia is still available.

  14. kd75 says: Jan 17, 2016 2:30 PM

The Eagles can gladly take the Giants linebackers and defensive backfield. I’ll throw in the Defensive line for free!

Why would any team want to emulate the worst defense in the NFL?

  15. genericnflfan says: Jan 17, 2016 2:32 PM

    lol why? he blows.

He did okay in his previous Giants stint. Not even Halas, Allen or Belichick could have made chicken salad out of the chicken s— they had on the defensive side of the ball this season.

Hey Eagle fans, Andy Reid wants to know if you want him back as a coach. Take your time, he does.

Wrong. The Eagles have 4-3 personnel but have pretended to be a 3-4 team the last couple of years. The front 7 is ready to go right now in a 4-3.

  22. imamarinebiologist says: Jan 17, 2016 2:43 PM

Does anybody think the Giants would actually block this?? Hasn’t been a good DC in 8-9 years.

  23. mongo3401 says: Jan 17, 2016 3:00 PM

Eagles better wake up and realize no matter who the coach or QB is, they are not going anywhere until they have an offensive line. Plenty of goo F/A Olineman out there for 2016. Now all Lurie has to do is open the pocketbook to get a few of them.

  24. kev86 says: Jan 17, 2016 3:09 PM

    Gisnts will take 5th rounder.

  25. key2heat says: Jan 17, 2016 3:14 PM

Coaches, and free agents have to be money whipped to go to philly and Washington.

I can see the Pederson era not going very good.

  31. 61veloce says: Jan 17, 2016 6:38 PM

Don’t forget that Spags was a coach with the Eagles first 199-2006) and has the Andy Reid connection. So he has a long history in Philadelphia. He’s not only a Giants coach.

  32. njtaurus says: Jan 17, 2016 8:22 PM

Please, just let him go! It’s not all of his fault (Reese is mainly responsible for this horrible defense) but he hasn’t shown he can lead a top 10 defense without Strahan, Tuck, and Osi.

  33. onlinetoughguy says: Jan 18, 2016 11:39 AM

Spagnuolo sucks. He had a good defense with the Giants when they had Justin Tuck, Michael Strahan, and Osi Umenyiora, but how much of that was scheme as opposed to superior talent??
