When September opened, wide receiver James Jones was on his way off the Giants roster after he failed to convince the team he was worthy of a prominent role in their offense.
That ended up being a pretty good thing for both Jones and the Packers. In need of a wideout with Jordy Nelson out for the season, the Packers signed their former receiver and were rewarded with 50 catches, a team-high 890 receiving yards and eight touchdowns during the regular season. On Monday, Jones said that he enjoyed being back in Green Bay and hopes that he’ll stick around.
“Man it was great to be back,” Jones said, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Be back with my teammates, a lot of guys that I came in with for the first seven years of my career. It felt good. I wish it would have ended a different way. It didn’t; but it felt good to be back. I’ve said it before, I would love to finish my career here. But I said that last time, so ... It’s a crazy business. We’ll see what happens.”
With Nelson expected back in time to start the year, there may not be room for Jones on the depth chart. Randall Cobb, Davante Adams, Jared Abbrederis, Saturday night’s almost hero Jeff Janis and 2015 third-rounder Ty Montgomery are also under contract, which probably means that neither re-signing Jones nor finding him playing time will be an immediate priority for the team in 2016.
