Former Vikings head coach Brad Childress will take over as offensive coordinator of the Chiefs, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday.

Childress has been with the Chiefs as a spread game analyst since his longtime friend and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid came to Kansas City in 2013. He has 17 years of NFL experience and was previously Reid’s offensive coordinator with the Eagles from 2002-05.

He fills the spot vacated by Doug Pederson, who was officially named Eagles head coach Monday.

Childress was the Vikings head coach from 2006-10. His last coordinator job was with the Browns in 2012.

A coach who has never won anything. Of course you can say that about ALL former Viking coaches.

  5. thenoshows says: Jan 18, 2016 4:52 PM

Too many men in the huddle Brad, after a time out???!!

  6. 65impala says: Jan 18, 2016 4:54 PM

now we all know why Andy recommended Pederson so highly to Philly! He sure didn’t waste any time hiring Childress, Pederson hasn’t even been officially named yet. Good one Andy we’re screwed!!

  7. skooter519 says: Jan 18, 2016 4:55 PM

I wonder if he knows anything about clock management.

  8. edelmanfanclub says: Jan 18, 2016 4:56 PM

Reid will call plays just like in Philly. Childress is a glorifed qbs coach with the title of coordinator under Andy.

  9. davikes says: Jan 18, 2016 4:57 PM

I wonder if Reid will let Chilly call the plays, or if they’ll revert to Reid calling the plays.

  12. blowfishes says: Jan 18, 2016 5:03 PM

Here’s hoping he has learned the difference between 11 and 12.

Guy deserves another shot, but he isn’t the offensive guru he was cracked up to be.

    Lol! Now that’s funny.

Yeah, and Bud Grant never won in his career either huh? Typical dilusional packer fans.

  15. chesswhileyouplaycheckers says: Jan 18, 2016 5:21 PM

Reid may decide to call the plays but Chilly will now be responsible for taking Andy’s challenge flag away at the 2:00 minute warning so there’s that.
Any truth to the rumor Hunt has requested Chilly be named clock coordinator as well?

  16. stellarperformance says: Jan 18, 2016 5:23 PM

If Favre had made that pass and they kicked that field goal……he’d still be their coach.

  17. cougar69rt03 says: Jan 18, 2016 5:27 PM

Wow here comes a predictable offense . Chilly is clueless especially when it comes to clock management .

Another case of the jokes just writing themselves.

  19. tjacks7 says: Jan 18, 2016 5:30 PM

No chance Reid lets Childress call plays. At least not if he’s smart. And history suggest Reid is smart enough since he didn’t let Childress call plays in Philly.

It’s amazing how bad you can be at coaching and still have a buddy willing to hire you in the NFL. It truly isn’t what you know, it’s who you know in the NFL.

  20. rosstuckershair says: Jan 18, 2016 5:30 PM

    Yes…two 3 yard runs…and a 3 yard pass in the flat…punt…rinse and repeat….

  21. rodd1 says: Jan 18, 2016 5:31 PM

Same old NFL coaching carousel … retreads, retreads and retread again … Oh wait, that describes Andy Reid as well !!!

  26. linemanguy74 says: Jan 18, 2016 5:38 PM

Maybe should have gone to Pack,Rogers may not be O-7 in OT games

  27. stevedenetz says: Jan 18, 2016 5:40 PM

if the chiefs could get plays in quicker they would be in Denver this weekend. this is not the hire that will help that.

  28. purpleguy says: Jan 18, 2016 5:48 PM

  31. Wisconsin's Favorite Son Jeffrey Be Dahmed says: Jan 18, 2016 5:56 PM

Favre really did like MN better to go there with this guy as their coach. Guess I can’t blame him. I’ve been to Green Bay. No one wants to be there.

  32. darkneptune73 says: Jan 18, 2016 6:21 PM

How da hell is Chilly still in the NFL?

  33. harrisonhits2 says: Jan 18, 2016 6:35 PM

Was that a collective groan we just heard from KC fans ?

  34. iamwoodwose says: Jan 18, 2016 6:39 PM

Childress was Reid’s OC who never got to call plays in Philly before he was hired by Minnesota to be their head coach. Reid and Childress are made for each other, neither one of them never saw a 1 to 2 yard pass that they didn’t love.

Dink and Dunk together again at last!

  35. usmutts says: Jan 18, 2016 6:44 PM

As a coordinator he is certainly offensive.

  36. hopethechiefsalwayslose says: Jan 18, 2016 6:44 PM

    Chiefs. LOL!

  37. msmith954 says: Jan 18, 2016 6:46 PM

LMAO I guess KC is not interested in returning to the playoffs.

  38. emperorxerro says: Jan 18, 2016 6:52 PM

Bring the Chiefs OC is a step up from any position in Minnesota.

  39. docboss says: Jan 18, 2016 6:56 PM

If he had been OC for Jeff Fisher, the Male Sheep would have been…8-8. Karma. Enjoy the Sheep LA. Seriously, this is a good choice for KC. Very good OC; not so much HC.

  40. dolphins4 says: Jan 18, 2016 6:59 PM

In 3 years Reid can hire Pederson back after he gets fired in Philly.

  41. youngs79 says: Jan 18, 2016 7:07 PM

Here comes “the kick ass offense”

  42. orivar says: Jan 18, 2016 7:27 PM

Viking fans are still salty but Childress was the Eagles QB Coach and then OC when they went to consecutive NFC championships. In fact the Eagles were kind of a force to be reckon with, with Chilly…and then we got Marty. Reid & Marty should never be paired together ever again.

  43. nicofthenorthstar says: Jan 18, 2016 7:33 PM

Time for Childress to unleash his “kick ass offense” on the NFL. Just make sure someone explains to him the rules regarding number of men allowed in the huddle.

  44. screamingyellowzonkers says: Jan 18, 2016 8:11 PM

Reid needs to make sure that Chilly is on his meds.

Chilly is the guy who traded for Moss, rarely called plays that included him, and cut him like two weeks later.

    Psycho.

You know that’s a great point. Forgive me in advance for stealing one of Garth Brook’s lines. “Sometimes God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers”.

    Programmatic non-fit?

  47. jbaxt says: Jan 18, 2016 10:03 PM

It’s too bad KC was without their top 3 players. It would’ve been nice to start their 4 year reign atop the AFC West this weekend. Denver will have a D, but no O without Peyton, SD will be back before the pathetic Raidets. How can a franchise not get above .500 in 14 years? Maybe moving to TX will relieve them of the constant stench in Oakland.

  48. scotrugby says: Jan 18, 2016 10:58 PM

“A coach who has never won anything. Of course you can say that about ALL former Viking coaches.”

Uh Tony Dungy and Brian Billick won a Super Bowl each and were both coordinators for the Vikings.

But please don’t let facts get in the way of your Viking hatred.

  51. whatjusthapped says: Jan 19, 2016 9:16 AM

He reminds me of Hogan’s Hero’s, Col. Klink, just as clueless and thinking he is the smartest guy in the room.

I long for the days when he was the Viking’s coach. He was perfect for that job, talked a big game and never delivered. Embarrassed himself and the organization when he rushed to the airport to pick up BrINT Favre and then ended their magical season with 12 men in the huddle.

Good luck to the Chiefs if they think this guy is qualified to do anything other than his Uber job.

  52. fmc651 says: Jan 19, 2016 10:49 AM

But Andy still won’t let Klink call the plays. He is a fraud of a coach.

  54. filthymcnasty3 says: Jan 19, 2016 5:56 PM

    Ahhhhhh, my old friend Chilly.

I remember back when Viking fans were so proud that they snagged him before the Packers could interview him. These geniuses thought he was their Messiah.
