49er quietly clean house in coaching staff

Washington Redskins v San Francisco 49ers Getty Images

No press release has been issued, but Monday brought about the end of the line for 10 members of the coaching staff in San Francisco.

Gone, per a source with knowledge of the situation, are offensive coordinator Geep Chryst (pictured), quarterbacks coach Steve Logan, receivers coaches Adam Henry and Ronald Curry, secondary coach Tim Lewis, defensive line coach Scott Brown, defensive assistants Ejiro Evero and Aubrayo Franklin, and offensive assistants T.C. McCartney and Joe Scola.

Defensive coordinator Eric Mangini continues to be employed, but multiple reports indicate that Texans assistant Mike Vrabel will interview for the job. With Kelly counting Patriots coach Bill Belichick as a close friend, the notion of keeping Belichick enemy Mangini is a bit surprising; hiring a Belichick favorite like Vrabel would make a lot more sense.

Either way, Kelly will be hiring plenty of assistants soon, with 10 spots officially created already this week.

Hmmmm Chip just dumped a whole lot of White coaches

In 4 years Chip Kelly has caused more people to lose their jobs then a positive drug test. After he fails in SF he should be banned from the NFL.

Until you clean out the front office (pointing at Baalke and York), it doesn’t matter who the coaches are, they won’t win much.

  4. faithful49er707 says: Jan 19, 2016 6:33 PM

Kelly would be smart to interview Ed Donatell for the DC job. Donatell who is Vic Fangios top assistant and a great DB coach. Although I’m sure York and Baalke would want nothing to do with that because that would just make too much sense.

So Perry Fewell is still on the staff?

  12. zillabeast says: Jan 19, 2016 6:41 PM

Vrabel would be a good hire. A linebackers coach for a team whose overall strength has been and continues to be its linebacking corps.

  13. bimbotheslob says: Jan 19, 2016 6:41 PM

    Billy Davis for Defensive Coordinator.

You’re trying to make a joke here, but the opposite of what you said is true, only Chryst, Logan, Scola, Brown and McCartney were white, the rest were black, so it was pretty much just cleaning house of staff from previous regimes that had little value to the new staff.

Is it any wonder that assistants who manage to hang on long enough to become head coaches are usually control freaks?

  25. kidsamoa260 says: Jan 19, 2016 7:04 PM

Just like the fans quietly disappeared. Great Mall, Valley Fair, Serramonte, New Park & nobody wearing 49er stuff. All the Bay Area shirtiques gone outta business.

I think it would be funny if Chip tried to trade for LeSean McCoy. Wouldn’t that be funny?

  27. pamperpro says: Jan 19, 2016 7:09 PM

Time to replace the trash with more trash.

The stench in Santa Clara is sickening.

  28. patriotsfootballleague says: Jan 19, 2016 7:14 PM

Kick that rat Mangini to the curb already, kick the door on him on the way out. Rat fink pretender. Some people just don’t deserve their title and status in the line of work. He will give Chip some serious heartburn over something, somewhere down the line. I hope Belichick pulls the trapdoor on Mangini.

  29. rutledge3197 says: Jan 19, 2016 7:20 PM

This is exactly what will happen in New England …. It’s Karma….. It happened in Dallas….. Oakland … Miami…. I’d say Pittsburgh but they sucked so bad from 1933 to 1972 I’ll give them a pass …. When you have extended periods where a team plays very well the opposite will rear it’s ugly head

  30. j0esixpack says: Jan 19, 2016 7:22 PM

It’s not Mangini’s fault that Goodell chose to posture as if signal stealing were somehow against the rules

Coordinators today still cover their mouths – heck – the Green Bay coordinator even covered his mouth when calling in a Hail Mary with no time left in the game – just as a force of habit

Anyone who thinks signals aren’t still being filmed by all teams (just not from the sidelines since 2006) is seriously delusional

  33. thegreatgabbert says: Jan 19, 2016 7:31 PM

Chryst and Kaepernick going over real estate listings in various parts of the country to see where they’d like to end up next season.

  34. thegreatgabbert says: Jan 19, 2016 7:33 PM

    They crucified Geepers Chryst.

  35. raiderrob21 says: Jan 19, 2016 7:33 PM

And this was a surprise to absolutely nobody. The surprise was when they hired all these guys and their fearless leader Jim Tomsula. EXCEPT to some 49er fans who believe all the smoke blown up their rears by the Bay Area Media

  36. sammyias says: Jan 19, 2016 7:35 PM

    I’ve seen this movie before.

    Surprising ending!

  37. skinnylegspeytonmanning says: Jan 19, 2016 7:35 PM

Ummm, PFT. Generally, when a HC is fired, the new HC is allowed to pick his staff. Just sayin’

Hmmmm Chip just dumped a whole lot of White coaches
    Yes. This is so confusing.

I don’t care if the coaches are white or black, but I do care that you guys don’t have a clue. Most of the guys he fired are actually black. Just so you know.

  39. slick3 says: Jan 19, 2016 7:41 PM

The 49r defense should be completely worn out by halftime of every game since they’ll be on the field for most of that time.

Florio Can you add to the article how many, if any, of the fired coaches were under contract and still owed money for this year. Next year, etc. They already owe Tomsula $10.5 Million it would make my day to know that they owe the 9 other coaches money also. What a joke Santa Clara is.

  42. carloswlassiter says: Jan 19, 2016 7:43 PM

Mangini is about to be blacklisted out of the NFL.

  43. docboss says: Jan 19, 2016 8:18 PM

  44. NinersRule says: Jan 19, 2016 8:30 PM

Vrabel as DC? With his one year as LB coach ??

I’m sure everyone on the Niners schedule next year would appreciate that.

Cross Chip off the Football Genius list.

  45. theninerlover says: Jan 19, 2016 8:36 PM

  52. pioniere says: Jan 19, 2016 10:29 PM

  53. chrisk61 says: Jan 19, 2016 10:30 PM

    uh niners fans,

here are a few comments from an eagles fan:

    1. you will only go as far as your qb…and kaep ain’t the guy
    2. many eagles opponents this yr said Kelly’s offense became predictable.
    3. Kelly didn’t hire good DC in billy davis. eagles defense was soft.
    4. overall eagles weren’t a physically tough team. Kelly seemed to prioritize tempo and finesse. not sure that works in nfl.

  54. jollyjoker2 says: Jan 19, 2016 11:12 PM

Long way from Montana and Rice….All I know – Not going in the right direction with this guy but- he will get you 8-8 for a couple of years until you wise up and send him packing.

  55. bartpkelly says: Jan 19, 2016 11:35 PM

It already happened to New England years ago…they had the No.1 pick and took Bledsoe. Seattle had No.2 and took Rick Mirer.

  56. tonebones says: Jan 19, 2016 11:46 PM

Dont’ call it house cleaning unless Baalke is part of it. This is just more scapegoating. Football games and super bowls are won on draft day. These guys aren’t fooling anyone. I mean they’re not fooling anyone that understands football.

  57. leftypointspread says: Jan 20, 2016 2:30 AM

  58. 94niners says: Jan 20, 2016 4:07 AM

  59. ymca2014 says: Jan 20, 2016 4:36 AM

    Mike Singletary for defensive coordinator.

  60. ob1canobie says: Jan 20, 2016 5:54 AM

  61. cornhusker44 says: Jan 20, 2016 6:49 AM

Again so long as they keep Rathman as RB coach. He did gangbusters work with them this season. Outstanding coach. Not that my name gives it away, Im something of a fan!!

  62. figure8v8racer says: Jan 20, 2016 8:13 AM

Now get rid of the no talent overpaid kaepernick and get a real QB and maybe they can win some games

  63. billfchew says: Jan 20, 2016 9:03 AM

Billy Davis for D- how about Marilyn McCoo? She would be better than Chippie for HC>

  64. RedStateDave says: Jan 20, 2016 10:19 AM

The tongue-chewing idiot cleaning house yet again…..

  65. uplate5301 says: Jan 20, 2016 1:37 PM

    At least they kept Rathman!

  66. barillasb says: Jan 20, 2016 9:00 PM

I’m holding any judgment until the season starts. He was not getting along with the players with the Eagles, he micromanaged them. Hopefully this new start with the 49ers will be good

  67. cri33 says: Jan 21, 2016 1:42 PM

And now the team will go 2-14.
