Reports: Eagles will hire Schwartz as DC

Bills Schwartz AP

The Eagles will hire Jim Schwartz as their defensive coordinator, Sports Illustrated‘s Don Banks reported Tuesday.

Schwartz met with new Eagles coach Doug Pederson Tuesday morning. He also recently interviewed with the Jaguars.

Banks reported that a deal between the Eagles and Schwartz is not yet signed but an agreement is in place.

Schwartz, 49, was the Lions head coach from 2009-13 and was the Bills defensive coordinator in 2014. He was not retained after Doug Marrone bailed on the Bills and Rex Ryan took over and didn’t work in the NFL last season.

Schwartz was also previously the defensive coordinator for the Titans from 2001-08.

Good hire. Enough with the experimenting.

  6. jets4thewin says: Jan 19, 2016 1:39 PM

His defenses flirt with the line between dirty and just playing tough, but there’s no doubt he’s a solid coach and the Eagles D should be much improved.

We miss you Jim. Good luck.

Now that the Schwartz is with us PLEASE NO WIDE 9

  9. rocketmcstonebreaker says: Jan 19, 2016 1:42 PM

I wonder if he’ll ask the players to carry him into his introductory press conference, on their shoulders.

  10. coloradofort says: Jan 19, 2016 1:44 PM

Why is this even considered a good hire?

  11. brenenostler says: Jan 19, 2016 1:47 PM

I think Pederson will be fine as long as he puts experienced coordinators around him. Mission accomplished so far

  12. coltzfan166 says: Jan 19, 2016 1:52 PM

Why do y’all always show this pic of him where he looks completely lost and confused? Oh wait I get it now

  13. ohand16 says: Jan 19, 2016 1:52 PM

Can’t believe he didn’t want to go back to Jacksonville with Marrone

  14. captainstabbins says: Jan 19, 2016 1:55 PM

Well no matter what it is better then Billy Davis…

  15. Rdog says: Jan 19, 2016 1:57 PM

I guess he didn’t want to wait on the Titans to see whether LeBeau was returning or not…

I swear, if the Eagles announced after the Super Bowl that they had convinced Bill Belichick to leave the Patriots and coach them and that he was bringing both his coordinators, plus Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski with him, people on here would still say it was a terrible hire.

I can excuse the Doug Pederson criticism, because I can’t expect the average commenter to know very much about a coordinator on a team that doesn’t appear in prime time 5 times a year, despite the fact that matching record for record he is every bit as qualified as Adam Gase, whom all of you wanted.

But to knee-jerk criticize the Schwartz hiring is just ridiculous. Do you think the Bills fans wish he were still there? Schwartz is a very solid hire, and if you don’t think so, quite frankly you don’t know what you are talking about.

    good hire….

hope he has a plan to take down Odell

yep, the Pederson hire looking better and better ever second!! I like this!
Get a good OC and we’ll be looking even better!
Just stay the hell away from the football “GUYS” HOWIE!

I like Schwartz just not as a Head Coach.

Scoops1 says “Hope ha has a plan to take down Odell”…….In this division he needs a plan to neutralize not just Odell,But Dez Bryant and Jordan Reed!!!!

    Welcome back Wide-9!

    Welcome to Loserville, Philadelphia!

There’s only one bright side to this off-season and a future with Roseman, you’re not the Cowboys.

  22. HankTheDog says: Jan 19, 2016 2:35 PM

Correct me if I’m wrong but you have hired a 4-3 DC with a roster full of 3-4 talent. This will take like 3-4 years to rebuild that side of the ball. You also have an offense which needs to be rebuilt after all the talent was run out of town. This team won’t compete for a good number of years.

  23. rajbais says: Jan 19, 2016 2:35 PM

The last time the Eagles did the Wide-9, they went 12-20.

Good luck under Howie Roseman! You’ll need it during these upcoming tough times.

  24. joetoronto says: Jan 19, 2016 2:47 PM

He is a great coordinator. Immediately turned Pettine’s good not great defense elite in Buffalo. That same defense immediately turned mediocre under Rex who runs a Pettine-esque scheme. Big win for the Eagels.

  25. duffman19101 says: Jan 19, 2016 2:49 PM

Hey current and future Eagles players – just be sure to be extremely respectful when shaking his hand.

    He’ll Harbaugh ya.

  26. jackvcr says: Jan 19, 2016 2:49 PM

Of course they hired Schwartz: he’s only been fired 3 times so far.
What’s with pro sports teams recycling coaches who have been regularly fired? There is new blood out there, team owners.

  27. tostitochip says: Jan 19, 2016 2:51 PM

Eagles defense has 4-3 talent not the other way around. Chip tried using Cox, Graham, Curry, and Logan in a 3-4 that did not let them maximize their potential..and for those to say Schwartz is a bad hire ,don’t know jack….When he was in Buffalo, they were 4th in points and yards allowed and were 4-0 against NFC North teams…. After Marrone bounced, Rex cleaned house and their defense regressed as you saw this season. He was offered the Dolphins DC position but declined

  28. ju8686 says: Jan 19, 2016 2:59 PM

They’ll (probably) be much better with Cox and Logan at the 3 & Graham and Curry on the edge not having to worry about coverage. Might need to find a bigger MLB, but the rest of the positions match up pretty well.

Hopefully Schwartz can get Kiko back in line …

Fletcher Cox is licking his chops!!!!!

  30. icebowler says: Jan 19, 2016 3:28 PM

Good DC, bad OC, so he won’t be snatched away for any HC job anytime soon. Just keep him away from the reporters.

  31. greeneblitz says: Jan 19, 2016 3:42 PM

Great hire for them, same with Frank Reich

  32. Soulman45 says: Jan 19, 2016 4:26 PM

I am hoping he get another try at the HC position I though he did O’K with the Lions.

  33. Soulman45 says: Jan 19, 2016 4:28 PM

I am hoping he get another try at the HC position I though he did O’K with the Lions.
    He should get another chance.

  34. fanofpft says: Jan 19, 2016 5:29 PM

He was offered the Dolphins DC position but declined

That was way back right after coach Joe was let go and it was for HC. No one wanted to jump in and start new while the season was going into week 5. And rightly so.

  35. thehighhat says: Jan 19, 2016 6:40 PM

2 terrible coaches, Pederson and Schwartz. Philly deserves better.

  36. lionswinsuperbowl says: Jan 19, 2016 7:24 PM

His defense only works with an elite front 4
