20 Patriots on injury report

Chicago Bears v New England Patriots Getty Images

As the Patriots prepare to face the Broncos, 20 New England players are dealing with injuries.

Special teams captain Matthew Slater missed practice with a shin injury. (The Patriots inadvertently declared him to be out in the report submitted to the league. He’s not out. Yet.)

No other Patriots player missed practice on Wednesday, but plenty were limited: receiver Danny Amendola (knee), tight end Scott Chandler (knee), linebacker Jamie Collins (back), safety Nate Ebner (hand), receiver Julian Edelman (foot), linebacker Darius Fleming (back, shin), linebacker  Jonathan Freeny (hand), tight end Rob Gronkowski (knee, back), linebacker Dont’a Hightower (knee), guard Tre’ Jackson (knee), defensive end Chandler Jones (abdomen, toe), defensive end Rob Ninkovich (shin), center Bryan Stork (ankle), tackle Sebastian Vollmer (ankle), and tackle LaAdrian Waddle (shoulder).

Fully participating in practice were quarterback Tom Brady (ankle), guard Josh Kline (shoulder), receiver Brandon LaFell (foot), and safety Devin McCourty (ankle).

So that’s 20 total names on the injury report. Which will make it hard for the Broncos to know who’s playing and who isn’t. Which isn’t a bad strategy with a Super Bowl berth on the line.

NE’s offensive line, vs Denver’s defensive line will be the difference maker.

And if Denver can minimize Edelman, and minimize his effectiveness, the Broncos have a very good chance of winning this game. Better yet, if Denver DB’s can jump those short 5 yard routes and take even one to the house, that would be a blessing.

Sack and harass Brady and you have a chance. What NE OL will show up? I like Denver’s defensive line and their chances against the OL of NE.

Last year Broncos players admitted they imploded at home against the Colts (!) because they were worried about being the team to go get pummeled by the Patriots at Gillette. Being at home might make them feel tougher now, but they’re still scared deep down. All that nervous chatter and fake bravado makes it plain.

  9. dwoofer says: Jan 20, 2016 6:20 PM

Perhaps as a result of this list the Pats will change their offense. They have the MOST BORING offense in the NFL. 50 to 60 short passes in the 5 to 8 yard range thrown quickly. No hint of a running game.

Perhaps it is because Brady can’t throw long accurately.

    Makes for very boring football.

  10. morebrocato says: Jan 20, 2016 6:20 PM

Isn’t this why BB himself always says he never puts any stock/care in these mid-week injury reports, and only gets down to business with who isn’t playing the day of the game?

This ‘strategy’ probably only affects coaches who obsess over injury reports.

skawh, and the Broncos offensive line vs. the Patriots defensive line is less important. Brady at this point of his career can still make up for a not so good game from his O-line. Peyton can NOT. The Broncos offensive line is the most crucial group of this game. If they can’t block the run and keep Peyton clean they have no chance. Peyton can’t carry the team if they make him pass it 40 times.

  18. dodgerlakerfan1969 says: Jan 20, 2016 6:33 PM

skawh, Brady is 0-2 against Peyton in Championship games because Peyton only makes it there when he has a great, stacked team. Brady on the other hand makes it almost every year(10 appearances in 14 seasons) and luckily for Peyton they met when his teams weren’t great. This year they are more evenly matched.

Perhaps you don’t know what you’re talking about. Pats throw downfield plenty, they just open up the long seams with the short passes and pick there places carefully.

Second, the short pass game is the run game some of the time. The screens and throws to the flat are effectively running plays for the Pats.

  23. thechickenexpress says: Jan 20, 2016 6:40 PM

Slater may be the best gunner in football at the moment. It won’t be nothing if he can’t play.

The rest of them, as corkspop says, will play, dinged up or not.

Hightower is key. The Broncos couldn’t run when he was on the field, last time around. He went out and suddenly they looked like the Shanahan Broncos circa 1998.

    ______________

Denver should be shaking in their boots. Bill has a winnung record against every team in thr NFL (unless you are the giants where it is split)

Tommy is the very best in the post season and last time they played in Denver they were missing 3 of their top 5 players had a big lead early on, and blew it because rookies didn’t know what they were doing muffing punts and putting the Donkeys in good field positions and refs were blowing calls dead. Even then it still went to overtime in the great homefield advantage of Denver.

Last time Denver played a healthy Patriots team (with a Manning that was actually good) they lost 43-21.

This is Denvers last week of Football. Sorry.

  25. thun2der says: Jan 20, 2016 6:41 PM

Again, like last week, everyone goes crazy with the injury report. Vast majority of the players listed as limited were also listed the same way last week, and they all played, and virtually all played well. They will all play again this week. The only ones worth focusing on are the players who were injured in the KC game. We know Mayo is done for yr, he was just their 4th linebacker, not a big deal. Chandler Jones had a knee scare, but he is now fine, they are just listing him for the same things as last week. Stork sprained his ankle in the 1st half but got taped and played the whole 2nd half, he is fine. Collins has a strained oblique, he will play, no question. Pats were as healthy against KC as they were since week 9, same will be the case this week. The only ” injury” that matters is that Peyton is done, not half the player he used to be.. Game won’t be close, 34-13 Pats, and the last game of noodle arms career

I guess noodle-arm runs a more dynamic offense with more accurate deep passes in your estimation?

The Pats death-by-1000-cuts style of offense works. Plain and simple. Maybe it’s not as exciting as watching Peyton and his happy feet launching his 5 yard wounded ducks to his stone-handed receivers, but you can’t argue with the results.

What a crock. What difference does it make in preparation? How exactly does that make it hard for them to prepare? They will game plan and prepare for the full complement, anyone that’s out will be a bonus for them.

It isn’t gamesmanship with the opposing team that prompts the Pats extensive injury reports it’s a backhander aimed at the league. Long ago they got banged on for some ridiculously minor treatment not being on the report, since then if a player has a hangnail he goes on the report.

  30. contender21open says: Jan 20, 2016 6:52 PM

    ——————-
Well, that and the fact they already beat the Patsy’s at Mile High a couple of weeks ago. With Denver’s top-ranked defense that bravado is very real. They know what they can do, and the Pat’s don’t scare them. They certainly respect them, especially Brady, but not fear. If the Pat’s don’t respect Denver and expect Manning to fail, it’s going to be two losses this year for them.
If they’re worried about the Denver chatter then Denver is already in their heads.

NE fanboys disrespect Denver as a team, as if Denver doesn’t have playmakers.

Look to several Denver receivers to have big games, as NE’s defensive backfield is but one of NE’s many weak links.

After all NE is 3-4 over the last 7 games. One home win against a KC team with a poor offensive scheme does not a playoff run make.

No question, Denver eeked out a win against the Patriots pratice squad receivers, as did some other teams

But Gronk and Edelman are playing. Denver shouldn’t be expecting the same type of game plan as the last time they met.

Ummm yeah it was over 10 years ago ….. But look nobody can’t beat NE ….your dynasty was over in 2005 …. See you clowns are already bringing up the past
    —————————————-
As long as there’s not another team equal to the winning consistency of the Patriots, the Dynasty lives.
Yes… Nobody can beat NE. There’s no past… The news of the Pats’ demise is a running joke. The Patriots are alive and well. We bring you the future. The future is looking bright… so bright it blinds you and your ilks with jealousy. Eat your heart out Bozo… Patriots rule, and as Gronk would probably say, you drool.

Perhaps you should take a look at the Xs and Os, and how the Pats offense runs. It’s anything but boring…it is a swiss watch.

    Everyone is playing

“So that’s 20 total names on the injury report. Which will make it hard for the Broncos to know who’s playing and who isn’t. Which isn’t a bad strategy with a Super Bowl berth on the line.”

Brilliant strategy. Have 40% of the roster injured just to mess with the heads of the opponents.

    (facepalm)

God forbid we take the injury list at face value.

I agree with the guy who said “smokescreen” they are all playing, bogus injury report

The clever part was putting Jerod Mayo on the IR list just to give it all credibility.

    (facepalm)

…. Just another reason Pats fans are a joke…. Karma is coming

Sure is taking its time. The obvious “karma” would have been to lose the game to the Colts. Or, even better, to the Seahawks. You know, in the Super Bowl? But karma favored the Patriots that day.

I guess if the Patriots don’t win every single game from now to the end of time, any loss will be a sign of “karma”.

Just assume everyone is going to play

People understand, right, that if a player is injured, even if he’s going to play, the team is required to put him on the injury list, right?

TB is 2-6 vs Denver in Denver

TB is 0-2 over the past 10 years against PM in AFC Championship games.

    Nice cherry-picking of endpoints.

TB is 11-5 vs. PM in all games.

TB is 5-2 against Wade Phillips teams. That’s far more relevant than historical games vs. Denver.

helmetcatch, you need serious help, what is the BIG DEAL about an injury report, the gsame is played on Sun.You guys are so delusional about the Pats cheating your accusing them of cheating on an injury report.Just makes you all look like scared little cowards.Be a man,you win or you lose, children and babies whine.

Bill Belicheat has been doing this for years. It just shows his mentality of being dishonest. He’s still a great coach, but his legacy is tarnished. Shula>Belicheat

I love these articles/comments. It doesn’t matter what the Patriots do, the same horde of mentally deficient clowns will be in here crying about it. OMG! They listed everyone on the report that received treatment or was limited in practice just as the rule states! Cheaters!

  87. iamapatsfan says: Jan 21, 2016 7:57 AM

This isn’t mind games with the Broncos. BBs injury reports are always about stuffing it to the NFL and their stupid insistence that the injury report is of the “utmost importance to the integrity of the game”…

And nothing whatsoever to do with gambling on it.

    6 Super Bowl appearances
    10 AFCCG’s
    4 titles
Highest winning percentage in the league

P.S. Shocking! Gronkowski listed as limited with knee and back injuries all week was active for this game. We now have official reports from the Patriots sideline that due to low, but legal hits from the Broncos defense, Gronkowski is ruled out here in the 2nd quarter.

And once again all of Patriot nation never once answer my questions…. You clowns continue to put up stats …. Other teams have done more in a shorter amount of time…. You claim a running dynasty yet have ONE SB victory in 10 years …. Here I’ll use the phrase you so ::: can I put it ALL CAPS … IS THAT LOUD ENOUGH … the reality is the soap box you scream from is on it’s way to the basement you tools are just to blind to see……
