Chip Kelly fires Eric Mangini as 49ers defensive coordinator

AP

Chip Kelly hasn’t named his new defensive coordinator in San Francisco, but it won’t be the old defensive coordinator.

Eric Mangini has been fired, Alex Marvez of FOX Sports reports. Mangini served as defensive coordinator last year on Jim Tomsula’s staff after serving as an offensive assistant the previous two years on Jim Harbaugh’s staff.

Now Mangini may struggle to find a new coaching job elsewhere, as his firing comes fairly late in the game after most teams have filled out their staffs. Mangini spent two years out of coaching after he was fired as head coach of the Browns following the 2010 season, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him spend a year out of coaching again.

There’s no word on who Kelly will hire as his new defensive coordinator. Mike Vrabel has already turned the job down, but Kelly presumably has someone else in mind.

  17. charliecharger says: Jan 22, 2016 5:07 PM

Chip Kelly didn’t fire anybody. Jed York fired Jim Tomsula. It’s not up to the new coach to fire the old assistant coaches. At least not on planet Earth.

A rat was fired? I don’t feel sorry at all. Glad Chip Kelly held out as long as he can till other opportunities were closed up. I bet Belichick had a hand in this. Delay and fire.

  20. nyninerfan says: Jan 22, 2016 5:10 PM

We’ll probably promote Jan from accounting to fill out this stellar staff Chip is putting together. The only good to come from Kelly getting hired is the fact that he, Baalke and Kaep will all be gone within the next two years.

  21. NinersRule says: Jan 22, 2016 5:10 PM

Trying to stay positive here but things don’t look good so far.

The attempted Vrabel hiring is the big red flag on Kelly.

No team in the NFL should EVER hire as Defensive Coordinator someone with one year — one!– of coaching experience in his life, and even thats merely as a LB coach.

This ain’t the Arena League. This is the N-F-L, man!

  33. chesswhileyouplaycheckers says: Jan 22, 2016 5:21 PM

I am not a Mangini fan by any means and of course when a new coach comes in he should create the staff he wants but the way this was handled says far more about Kelly than it does about who he fired. Shopping the job and doing interviews while the position was still occupied was scummy. I never had anything against Kelly for any of the ridiculous things said by or about him and the strange roster moves but this definitively shows low character.

I’m pretty sure it went down like this:

    1. Mangini finds out that his job was offered to Mike Vrabel
    2. Mangini storms into Chip’s office and tells him to cut that sheet out. If he doesn’t want him there, then let him go.
    3. Chip says, sure…You’re fired! And then puts on a Donald Trump hairpiece.

Desperately the search and scramble, looking for reasons to become relevant to 49ers fans. A faux rivalry, only outshone be their faux dynasty, but still they cling to this imaginary float. Truth is they have nothing. An empty shell. Their only glow a single Lombardi for their “years of dominance”. They are dark, lonely, sad characters. Craving the Red and Gold reverence, seeking the history of a storied, world wide brand, only to be trodden on and forgotten like the majority of their fellow “followers”. Their final despair, a scared ignorance of reality. AFC? NFC? No one knows – no one cares. They are of no significance, even in their own city. Their stadium, old, decrepit, hollow. Stolen nickname, stamped on by a school. Their greatest ever players remain unknown to the throng. One day, in an NFL far, far away, they hope to be important. For now they are bitter, pained, denied status. Denied a stage. Denied real fans. They grasp frantically and kneel at the 49er alter of greatness. Dazzled, transfixed, wide eyed at our 5. Unfit for purpose they crawl back to the rain. Loss is tragic. Show pity fellow Faithful. They are worthy of pity at least. Just pity, nothing more. They are worthless.

Say what you want about Mangini, I still think the guy is a good head coach. He was better than Rex, made good personnel decisions, and might have done something if Favre wasn’t forced upon him, or tear his muscle after being forced upon him. He was also good within 2 minutes on both sides of the ball. If you ask me, that is the thing that most coaches that are semi-successful, ahem Bowles, have the most trouble with.

Stage 5 of Patriots fans’ defection of cheating: Constantly bring up alleged scandals of other teams from the 1990s that no one has heard about

    ————————————–

A little history lesson to get you all up to speed on the 1990s scandals. The Jets tampered with Patriots coach Bill Parcells in 1996 as he was taking the Patriots to the Super Bowl. Parcells resigned after the game – a loss to the Packers – and didn’t even return home with the team. When he officially signed with the Jets, the Patriots were awarded four draft picks – a 1st, a 2nd, a 3rd and a 4th. When the Parcells and the Jets stole Curtis Martin a year later, the Patriots were awarded two draft picks – a 1st and a 3rd. When the Patriots wanted to sign Bill Belichick as head coach in 2000, in a sham move Parcells stepped aside to make Belichick head coach of the Jets even though he didn’t want the job. Belichick sued the NFL and eventually got his wish to go to the Patriots in exchange for a 1st round pick and a swap of some lower round picks. And that, boys and girls, is how the Patriots and Jets started hating each other.

All of you Pats homers are hysterical. It’s obvious, and Mangini has admitted as much, that he wasn’t trying to turn anyone in…just trying to keep them from taping the Jets.

As for not being able to beat Belichick, the last time they coached head to head, Mangini embarrassed the Pats with the Colt McCoy led Browns.

Mangini did get put in a tough spot this year. Retirements and injuries hampered the lineup and the offense gave them the worst defensive starting field position in the league. Pats fans just don’t ever want to admit that this guy can coach and that is no surprise considering how much more interested they are in being homers rather than knowing anything about football.

He owes his entire NFL existence to Belichick, yet took a minor infraction (the same infraction that Mangini was guilty of with the Jets, by the way) and blew it up, creating the irrational hysteria that has surrounded it to this day.

Deflategate wouldn’t have even been a thing without Mangini’s actions over the first game of the season in 2007, so you know where this guy ranks with Belichick, the Patriots organization, and the region.

I’m sure Chip has a line of people that want to coach a defense that is going to be on the field 3 full games more than an average defense.

I mean, who wants to spend time teaching schemes, fundamentals, match ups, etc, when you can spend all of your time working on conditioning to prepare for the 90 snaps a game you are going to play?

I’m sure the only line that is longer is the line of DB’s that want to run up and down the field 75 times a game, then get blamed when they get burned deep in the 4th quarter on the 78th trip

Besides, what was a bigger disgrace than Parcels making a deal to go to the Jets while he should have been preparing to play the Packers in the SB ( maybe like think about Reggie White) ? There’s just something about that Jets organization…..

  90. aljack88 says: Jan 22, 2016 7:49 PM

To add to parilli15’s good historical post, the Jets ownership was under transition at that time. It was not a sure thing who was going to be the owner when the job was given to him. Also, Belichick would not have full control of the team like he has with the Pats as Parcels would still be involved in the Jets’ day to day operation. A situation that Belichick rightfully thought wasn’t a good deal at all.

Little does Mangini know that being fired is a blessing in disguise.

this is normal, new HC comes in with new staff. I think a lot of people are making it more than it really is. We knew that if they wanted Vrabel then Mangini’s term in SF (SC) wouldn’t be long. I’ve heard names like Jason Tarver being mentioned. It just has to be a strong Defense if what everyone is saying is true, that the O will be fast paced. Still holding judgement on Kelly. Now if he starts getting good of great players who are productive, then well…it gets personal. But I will hold off on judgement. I can only get better from Tomsula’s time with the team

Ratatouille, 49er’s style. A dish best served cold to the right person. Too bad his departure wasn’t taped as well so we could all read his signals as he exited the stadium

The rat is sniffing for another piece of cheese. The only takers left are bspn and it’s where this fraud belongs. His camera guy in the stands snitching out the patriots camera man on the sidelines is hilarious. As Parcells was fond of saying you are what your record says you are. A RAT!

“I’ll be bringing my innovative systems to the defensive side of the ball this season” Chip added.

The coaching staff did a good job in the opening game, winning against the Vikings. Then, inexplicably, the team stopped doing what it did to win the next game, namely they stopped blitzing and allowed Big Ben to pick the defensive secondary apart. There is no secondary in the league that can be successful with no pass rush of any kind. It is this sort of inexplicable and inconsistent performance that made the Niners a 5-11 team in 2015. They would play well one game, and then the offensive and defensive game plans turned bad another game. The head coach was fired because the front office believes that the Niners are a better team than their record suggests. Obviously the head coach wasn’t the only one who did not do a good job.

I wish people would Shutup with the “THE DRAMA CONTINUES” bs…the man fired a DC who led the 28th ranked defense.

Nice to see all these rat/snitch references. Patriot fans finally seem ready to admit the organization was engaging in improper behavior for which they could be ratted out. Better late than never!

  112. xavier179 says: Jan 23, 2016 12:35 AM

Give him 3 years, if he doesn’t turn things around in SF, then he is finished in the NFL.

I was apprehensive at first but with this move, the Chipper has shown some competence. Maybe there is hope for the 49ers after all.

Entering coaches fire members of previous regimes all the time.

Chip Kelly does not walk on water.
He puts his shoes on one at a time just like the rest of us.
He did an awful job in Philadelphia.
His system is a gimmick college system that he proved he couldn’t or wouldn’t or refused to tweak for the pro game.
He relates much better to players playing for educations than grown men playing professional football.

Just wait until Chip figures out who his most talented players are – they will be gone soon.

They were already taken care of the previous year.
