Report: Titans hiring Russ Grimm

AP

The Titans will hire veteran coach Russ Grimm to coach their offensive line, Alex Marvez of FOX Sports reported Friday.

A Hall of Fame guard for the Redskins, Grimm has not coached since 2012. He was most recently assistant head coach and offensive line coach for the Cardinals.

He has 21 seasons of coaching experience with the Steelers and Cardinals. Grimm worked with Titans head coach Mike Mularkey in Pittsburgh.

Grimm is 56. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010.

  1. I was just wondering the other day what had happened to him. IIRC those Cardinals OLs were pretty bad while he was there but maybe that was a talent thing.

  2. With Munchak gone, I’m glad to see a real OLine guy in the fray. The Titans have talent, they need a coach who knows the discipline and can toughen up Lewan and Warmack. Those big boys can use a lesson from a Hog.

  3. Had to be a funny phone call. Kinda like the scene from Major League..

Hey Russ, how about coaching the OL with the Titans?

Uhhhhh…. I don’t know… I got a guy on the other line about some white walls. I’ll have to call you back.

As a Cardinals fan since 1997, I can assure that it was more like a “GM is too dumb to recognize talented O-linemen and actually sign them” thing.

You know, the way the Cardinals franchise operated until they decided to hire Steve Keim. Keim has basically signed a new O-lineman or two every year, and guess what – the O-line is pretty good now!

It’s amazing that anyone would ever, ever hire Rod Graves. Note that after he was fired, the Jets immediately hired him, only to fire him a year later.

  5. Anything related to those Whisenhunt years here in AZ should have been quarantined then burnt… Russ has been terrible everywhere…. In name only got him where he is and was

  6. It will be interesting to see smash-mouth football in Tennessee. It’s actually not a bad idea to have a run-first mentality with a young, inexperienced QB. It will take some pressure off Mariota as he develops. Of course, they need the players for it.

  7. As a Steelers fan I’d say Tomlin has made some boneheaded moves and I am a perpetual critic of his, but I have a hard time imagining Grimm would have been a better head coach. So anyone who says that Grimm got “robbed” because of the Rooney Rule is an idiot. The Rooneys hired the guy who seemed like he would have the most success, and he has. Definitely more than Wisenhunt. End of story.
