49ers hire Hardy Nickerson as linebackers coach

Chip Kelly still hasn’t named the 49ers’ next defensive coordinator, but he is filling out the defensive coaching staff.

Hardy Nickerson will serve as the 49ers’ linebackers coach, Alex Marvez of FOX Sports reports.

Nickerson had a 16-year NFL career with the Steelers, Buccaneers, Jaguars and Packers and was a five-time Pro Bowler. He has twice worked as an assistant to Lovie Smith, first in Chicago and then for the last two years in Tampa Bay.

That Kelly would begin hiring defensive coaches suggests that he knows what kind of defense he’s going to run and may have already decided on his defensive coordinator without actually naming him yet.

The job in San Francisco will allow Nickerson to be close to his son, Hardy Nickseron Jr., a linebacker at Cal.

I’m glad to see Hardy doing well. I have always thought that the Steelers made a mistake in letting him go.

I’m thinking Jason Tarver is the guy.

this is a good hire. it’s nice to see the 49ers are now going to have a real coaching staff in 2016 instead of the patchwork group of guys who were other team’s scraps in ’15.

I loved watching Hardy Nickerson play. Glad to have him aboard! Any truth to the rumor that Lovie Smith may come in to run the defense?

Linebacker coach…before D-Coordinator? I’m sure that sounds appealing to candidates. They’re already undermining you and you haven’t been hired yet.

And he is from the east bay

He was an awful highschool football coach at Bishop O’Dowd.

The Niners DC is probably on the staff of one of the 4 remaining playoff teams. Can’t make it official until they are out.

Nickerson was a superb player. And another black hire for Kelly. Odd.

Can’t knock that move. Seems legit.

Nice choice…This move is still better than the Falcons who picked their OC before their HC last season.

Why a joke. If he’s working for York then he’s probably making minimum wage and food stamps. Lol what a joke of a franchise.
