Aqib Talib: In the biggest games, Manning is 3-1 against Brady

DENVER, CO - JANUARY 24: Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots is tackled by Aqib Talib #21 of the Denver Broncos after an 11 yard scramble in the second quarter in the AFC Championship game at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on January 24, 2016 in Denver, Colorado. Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib is in his second season as Peyton Manning’s teammate, after two seasons as Tom Brady’s teammate in New England. In the head-to-head question of which future Hall of Fame quarterback is better, Talib is going with his current teammate.

Talib pointed out on NFL Network after the game that in the AFC Championship Game, Manning’s teams have won three of four against Brady’s teams. The Broncos are now 2-0 against the Patriots in AFC Championship Games since Manning arrived in Denver, while the Patriots and Colts split their two AFC Championship Game meetings when Manning was a Colt.

“Peyton is 3-1 in the AFC Championship Game, so he’s got the edge in the biggest games they’ve played in,” Talib said.

Talib is right about that, but the reality is that in most of the meetings of Brady and Manning, the team with the better defense won. That was the case today, and the truth is Talib and the Broncos’ defense deserve more of the credit than Manning.

Brady has always had good teams surrounding him. That’s why the Patriots still went 11-5 with Matt Cassel at QB.

As far as I’m concerned he’s not even in the conversation for GOAT. Hall of fame, sure, but GOAT? Absolutely not. Manning was always better than Brady up until recently.

Curiously, it may well have been 2-2 if Talib hadn’t gotten injured during the corresponding game two years ago.

Broncos D, and their pass-rush in particular, was outstanding today.

  30. Vir Publius says: Jan 24, 2016 8:39 PM

So just to make it clear, when the defense helps Brady get wins no one holds it against his legacy, but when a defense helps Peyton it’s a sign that he sucks. Sounds like an argument from a non-biased source.

  32. jjmurphy1127d says: Jan 24, 2016 8:43 PM

  33. Bonerz'NPudz says: Jan 24, 2016 8:44 PM

No, in the biggest games the Broncos are 3-1 against Shady. You could substitute a sore-armed old lady for manning and get the same results.

  36. tonebones says: Jan 24, 2016 8:53 PM

Brady and Manning are both awesome top ten all time QBs. Manning’s team won today, but John Elway and his staff have done a great job of building a nasty defense. It wouldn’t surprise me if both Brady and Manning retire at the end of this season. Brady only talks about playing another ten years just so nobody keeps asking him about it. Talib won’t be winning the Einstein award.

  37. sc5000 says: Jan 24, 2016 8:53 PM

Football teams win games not QB’s. Which makes the buildup to the game even more bizarre.

Denver has the better defense, better run game and all anyone could talk about was NE ending the game at halftime. Esp. against a team that owns Brady 2-7 at Mile High.

Pats lost this game in week 17 when they got jack hammered by the Dolphins and gave up home field advantage.

This was Denvers game to loose despite the betting line and they cashed it in. The best TEAM usually wins in this spot and they did today.

  38. chesswhileyouplaycheckers says: Jan 24, 2016 8:57 PM

Wanted one last great Manning/Brady rivalry game. Got a great defensive game for the ages and neither Manning or Brady had much say in it. Funny how things turn out. Again, congrats to the Broncos and good luck in the SB.

  39. cjmullysr says: Jan 24, 2016 8:59 PM

I am really tired of all the Brady/Manning comparisons, etc. QB’s don’t play against each other, teams do. Can’t we all just accept over the last 16 years we have watched excellence from both of these guys. They are both true professionals who work hard at their craft. The defense ruled the day on both sides of the ball today and as often is the case, the better D wins.

Good Luck to the Broncos, should be a slugfest against Carolina.

Gents, I left a while back because I was driven to drink due to the quick, not well thought out comments.

Today Tom Brady almost threw for twice as many yards as Manning. Ig you watched the game at all you must have realized Brady had a line worse than my 49ers. He also had non of his running backs… Steven Jackson? Really?

Look, neither everyone hurt he did what he could in an unfair altitude. Most of you probably have never skied let alone ran around in Denver.

Denver beat the Pats today fair and square. Just take it easy on the Peyton beat Brady, because Brady beat Manning, the Pats lost to Denver.

For you slower types, that means other players on both sides had impacts on this game as well.

Good luck Denver and Manning… You’ll need it against the Panthers. The Pats couldn’t beat the Panthers either.

  42. abninf says: Jan 24, 2016 9:02 PM

Talib is right about that, but the reality is that in most of the meetings of Brady and Manning, the team with the better defense won.

Broncos out of Denver on a neutral field against Cam. The spread will probably start out Car -10. However, they do seem to play to the level of their competition. Might be interesting. I could see a close low scoring game or I could see a Carolina blow out. If the score gets up over 30 I don’t see Denver in the game.

That Denver D was something else today. The entire O line for NE needs to profusely apologize to Brady for their performance.

Manning is an All Time great QB, but anyone watching the Panthers now can see that Denver is going to have a tough time beating them. Because Peyton is in the conversation of All Time greats, his greatest failure of SB losses being more than wins will leave a mark.

I can’t relate to this guy. I mean how awful it must be to back a team so hopeless that his one glory in life is seeing the best team and most accomplished QB of the millennium lose. You have my sympathies. Not everyone gets to root for a team who has played in ten conference championships in 15 years. Throw in 6 Super Bowl appearances and 4 Lombardi’s and I can see why haters hate. So enjoy this day. It doesn’t happen very often and it is almost assured NE will be right back here again next year.

    *

Yeah. That year the Patriots lost five less games (seven if you count the playoffs) then the prior season.

And yeah, Brady is certainly in the conversation for GOAT. Don’t be an idiot. When it’s all said and done, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady will be the top two QB’s all time (in no particular order).

There is no one more pathetic than the Pats haters. And this is coming from a Dolphins fan.

As an impartial fan, I’m just glad this was a good game. I hope for the same in the Super Bowl.

So just to make it clear, when the defense helps Brady get wins no one holds it against his legacy, but when a defense helps Peyton it’s a sign that he sucks. Sounds like an argument from a non-biased source.
    *****************
THIS win goes to his defense. Prior Brady wins were team wins. His 03-04 teams were 17-2. Great defense but they put up points too.

T Brady- 6 Super Bowls, 4 rings. One team, one coach, one system for entire career.

P Manning- 4 Super Bowls, 4 different Head coaches, 2 different teams.

Which is the greater accomplishment? Both incredible but I say Manning’s. He’s already the only player in history to take 2 teams to 2 Super Bowls and if he wins this one he will be only QB to win a ring with 2 teams.

The question for Brady will always be “Was the success because of Brady or Belichick”? When Brady got hurt, Belichick took a QB that never started in college and never played as a pro and led the team to 11-5.

We will never know what Brady could do without Belichick. But we know what Peyton can do. Doesn’t matter what coach, what system, what team, Peyton is the one constant in those successes. I realize the defense is a major reason for Peytons success this year, just as it was in Bradys first few championships. But getting to Super Bowls with Dungy, Caldwell, Fox, and now Kubiak with all manner of defenses and offensive lines is truly amazing. Moreso than one team, one coach, one system. Imho

It’s hilarious to see Patriots fans whine that Manning had the better defense today… how many years did Brady get to play Manning with McGinest, Vrabel, Law, Bruschi and the rest of that all-star crew behind him? Funny didn’t hear any Pats fans bring up defense back then.

  98. patswhatsup says: Jan 24, 2016 11:11 PM

If Manning can even make it there. This was the Pats 5th AFCCCG in a row and Brady’s 10th overall. They could easily make it back next year. They played a good game and the Pats had their chances so no whining from me.

  99. iseek11 says: Jan 24, 2016 11:18 PM

Funny how Pats fans want it both ways. Peyton is called the greatest regular season QB and Brady is greatest post season. They like to brag about Brady owns Manning with 11-6 record. But he’s 1-3 against him head to head in playoffs. So which is it? Do QBs win and lose or do teams? It’s nice that other teams have done the dirty work for the Patriots in past seasons so they haven’t had to face Peyton more.

  111. madmike66 says: Jan 25, 2016 12:16 AM

The only thing Brady did better today was rack up yardage, mostly because his team completely abandoned the run while Denver stuck with it. Peyton threw for 2 TDs, no INTs. Brady threw 2 INTs. Brady was also largely terrible on 3rd down conversions. Was Denvers defense beast? Of course, but we never downgraded Brady when his defenses were excellent. Manning was better today. Period. When everybody said he was finished, he won the game and beat Brady and the Pats. Period. At the beginning of the game he looked great and lead them on two TD drives. And his receivers still dropped plenty. He could have, should have, had more yards and really distanced the Broncos earlier on.

    ———————-
I’ll give you Super Bowl 36. Super Bowl 38 was a shootout in the 2nd half final score 32-29. Brady was 32-48 for 354 yards and 3 TDs. That’s not Dilferesque and was BEFORE they opened up the passing rules on downfield contact.

  116. lanman11 says: Jan 25, 2016 1:42 AM

All the wins in the 4 AFC title games between the two were won by the home team. It makes a huge difference.

The Patriots put themselves in a bad position by not locking up home field, and by chasing points today. They took chances Denver did not take because they were more confident in their ability to overcome any mistakes, and perhaps feeling the pressure to perform that road teams often do. Denver knew their limitations, and that’s sometimes a good thing, especially with a good defense playing well.

Having aid that, I don’t think the Panthers will do the same. I’m having trouble not seeing this game play out the same as so many other Bronco and Peyton Super Bowls…..a loss…..a big one. I know people will say that’s good, keep under estimating them, but really, they are not a complete team. They have a chance, because of the inexperience of the Panthers, and their second half struggles, but their d-line will more than likely maul Manning, and he may not be able to finish the game. That might end up as a blessing in disguise for Denver, as they are between a rock and a hard place if Manning plays poorly. After all this fanfare, I doubt Kubiak will want to bench Manning in the Super Bowl.

  117. s0calpatsfan says: Jan 25, 2016 2:54 AM

Denver’s D deserves all the credit. Patriots also made some bad calls, gave up 6 points on FG’s and 1 extra point.

If Bill B doesn’t make those stupid calls, the Patriots win that game despite being outplayed by the Defense, not Manning.

Good Luck Denver in the SB, but I think Carolina is going to destroy whoever they played.

  125. dynastyposeiden says: Jan 25, 2016 6:56 AM

laughing hard at the dopes that reference this win as a manning over brady thing. The doncos defense is epic and shut down brady but the doncos offense has looked so very ordinary the last 2 weeks and the doncos had best not allow cam and the panthers to get to 20 points because that sad sack manning led offense isn’t putting many points against a young and fast panther defense .
the pats and manning cannot lose enough to suit me but as a football fan neither guy was good yesterday and neither are capable of beating the panthers without a lot of help from the special teams or defense.

What happened was the Pats o-line couldnt block a mostly 3 man rush. Hard to win when you cant even block 3 guys. Also not the Hoody’s best coaching job either during the game (should have taken the 3 points) or down the stretch of the reg season -this game should have been in Foxboro. But 2 evenly matched teams, the home team won.

    Congrats to the Broncos fans

  127. yizudien says: Jan 25, 2016 7:14 AM

People need to get over Manning’s noodle arm. Brad Johnson won a super bowl with no arm, he just took care of the football and let the defense create opportunities.

Today’s Manning wont be making the throws that put the colts ahead of N.E. the year the colts won the super bowl. What you will see is Peyton not giving the game away with poor decisions. Denver’s defense won the game, NE doesn’t have a lock down defense (it is impressive brady was held to one TD).

That was the big difference here.

Manning and Brady are the two best QB’s to ever play the game. I don’t care about rule changes on PI and QB hits and all that. They have had to navigate modern defensive schemes that Montana and all the rest never faced. It’s not just athleticism like in the old days. It’s more homework and brains now than just talent. Brady and Manning are the two best ever. You can rank 1 and 2 however you want with no argument from me.

He talks big now but he wasn’t singing that tune when he was with the Patriots. The Patriots made him. He was quite the troubled player in Tampa. Patriots took a chance on his potential and eventually traded for him after joint practices with Tampa Bay during the preseason. Bucs were NOT going to resign him and Patriots made the deal.
He was only on Brady’s side for a Manning win and no on the Broncos side for another Manning win… not too mention that the game was not so much about Manning but the Bronco defense and the beat up Patriot OL which finally fell apart…

  133. ampatsisahypocrite says: Jan 25, 2016 10:15 AM

Manning had Jim Irsay and Jim Caldwell to deal with.

Everyone remembers when Caldwell took a timeout against the jets that caused them to be able to win the game after a nice Braylon Edwards pass.

Does anyone think Irsay is not like his father? This guy is going off around the same time his dad did with a move to Indianapolis.

I have never seen as much credit given to defenses as I have seen over the past 24 hours.

Before this, Patriots fans were all Brady is the best ever. Now they backpedal and say Brady didn’t have a defense this year. Of course, they conveniently dismiss people when they ever draw a correlation between the Patriots having a top tier defense and winning the Super Bowl.

When Manning supporters would echo that sentiment, people would rebuke it until the end of time. Now that Manning is 3-1 in the AFC Championship game against Brady, it seems that logic and levelheaded thinking regarding whether a QB has anything to do with the defense and the age old debate of is Trent Dilfer better than Dan Marino.

  138. j0esixpack says: Jan 25, 2016 2:19 PM

Well, if you don’t count all the playoff games that Joe Montana lost – well before he reached the Super Bowl, then there’s no question he’s the Greatest of All time

And by the same token, if you don’t count all the times Peyton Manning lost – in the Super Bowl and the playoffs – then he has a PERFECT and UNDEFEATED RECORD in the playoffs…. clearly making Peyton Manning the Greatest of All Time

You really can’t argue with that logic – if you don’t count the games Manning lost then he’s undefeated.

Broncos fans have all the answers it seems

  139. vikingforlife says: Jan 25, 2016 4:45 PM
