The Browns released a statement Tuesday about quarterback Johnny Manziel that signaled their intent to move on from Manziel because of his “continual involvement in incidents that run counter” to the team’s expectations of their players.
In the statement, Browns executive director of football operations Sashi Brown said Manziel’s status will “be addressed when permitted by league rules.” Teams are allowed to resume waiving players the day after the Super Bowl, but it will be a while longer before the Browns can cut Manziel.
According to multiple reports, the Browns rolled over their remaining cap space from 2015 at the end of the season and cannot absorb the $4.33 million cap hit that comes with releasing him until the new league year begins on March 9.
That gives other teams a month to work out a trade for Manziel if they so desire, although there doesn’t seem to be much chance of that happening. The Cowboys have been the team most often mentioned as a potential landing spot for the quarterback, but they have the fourth position in waivers. The Browns are second and the other teams ahead of Dallas -- Tennessee and San Diego -- are unlikely to have interest in bringing Manziel to their roster.
