Dan Marino: Dolphins could get in position to compete quickly

LUDLOW, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 30: NFL representative Dan Marino (NFL support the Walk of Britain) throws an American Football during a break on the route to Ludlow with Walking with the Wounded's Walk of Britain team on September 30, 2015 in Ludlow, England. The Dolphins haven’t been in the Super Bowl since Dan Marino’s second season and they hope the hiring of Adam Gase as their new head coach can be a step toward ending that drought.

On Tuesday, Marino joined Mike Florio on PFT Live from Radio Row in San Francisco to discuss the chances of the Dolphins taking that step.

“You have to be patient as a team,” Marino said. “Hopefully we’ll continue to build and continue to get the type of players that the team needs to compete for the AFC East first. Gotta do a better job there. When you look at teams around the league, you could get in a position to compete pretty quickly. Hopefully we’re close to that.”

Marino, who has the title of special advisor to the president and CEO with the Dolphins, later added that the team needs to be “more consistent” than they’ve been in the last few years. To hear more about Marino’s work with the Dolphins and his thoughts on Ryan Tannehill’s arm strength, check out his full appearance below.

It turns around super quick when you have a franchise QB which I don’t believe the Dolphins have in Tannehill. I think it’s safe to say Albert, Pouncey, and James are solid enough in their rolls where that only leaves the two guard positions. I don’t think adding two guards who are decent will transform Tannehill into a franchise player.

nope. need a QB. Tannehill is awful

  3. 3rdngoal says: Feb 2, 2016 4:22 PM

Haha, every time they hire a new coach they have the next Patriots killer. The only thing that is going to open up the division is when Brady retires.

  4. dsigrey says: Feb 2, 2016 4:28 PM

Sorry Dan… Too many obstacles in your own division.

Nothing to worry about until the Suh contract is up.

    I’ll check back in a couple/few years.

They always do great in the off-season… When football games aren’t being played! Lol

  8. jjackwagon says: Feb 2, 2016 4:51 PM

    Hey Dan,
You do know they are the worst team in their division…yes? To start they need to stop hiring a new coach every year.

  9. bullcharger says: Feb 2, 2016 4:57 PM

Tannehill isn’t good enough. Maybe they can make the playoffs but they can’t win 4 playoff games against teams with escalating talent. No way.

If there was a year when a new AFC team could have made a run, this was the year. The Patriots were vulnerable, Denver had ups and downs, the Steelers had Ben hurt for half the year. Cinci lost their QB. Luck was hurt.

However, the Jets folded, Houston stunk and KC couldn’t beat the Patriots.

Manning, Brady and Ben again were the last three QBs.

It will be harder next year. Steelers are getting better and the Patriots will probably have better luck with injuries. Cinci isn’t going anywhere either and the Jets and Bills are equally as good as Miami.

Marino was one of the Greatest QB’s to play the game how many Championships does he have ? My point is this is a team game. Ryan Tannehill can’t do it on his own, horrible O lines plus has not been in the same system (every year its changing) Peyton Manning said it today it takes a QB 1.5 Years to learn a new system and 3 to 4 years to master it .

They could. But they won’t. “Just ’cause you pay a guy franchise money, don’t make him franchise.” – Shannon Sharpe on Tannehill

    exactly

I’m a Phins fan, know a lot of season ticket holders, and I don’t know one fan that thinks Tanny is the answer…

it’s absurd that there are Phins fans coming on here down voting every word of Tannehill criticism….

you have to be completely drinking the Philbin Kool Aid or have your eyes closed to the game to believe that a 4th year QB who has never ranked above 15th, has terrible accuracy beyond 10 yards, and is terrible at reading Ds / audible at the line… is going to get you anywhere in a division with Tom Brady. It’s like techy fanboys who just buy an Iphone every time and ignore the reality.

the Phins / Marino have to make the best of it of course, because they are dead out of cap space between Tanny and Suh, hence you get the careful PR / verbal gymnastics you see in this interview with Marino.

Matt Moore was playing great behind a terrible line when Tanny got drafted, and he’s averaging nearly $3M a year to hold a clipboard as a living, which is a great gig if you can get it. It’s unfortunate that Philbin married Tanny.

Another long year coming up, maybe they get lucky with a late round QB pick this year.

Any team can compete for the SB any year.

Losing teams have to part with certain players and coaches and management personnel. It’s mostly loyalty that gets in the way, both to people and to the money that was spent on them.

If an owner wants to compete, he has to bite the bullet and eat the losses. He’s much better off starting from scratch.

  17. finjim1020 says: Feb 2, 2016 6:06 PM

Tannehill is fine. Learn football idiots. Nobody can win with that horrible line and defense.

    Morons.

Still have managed for the last 4 years to take one away from the by GOD patsies the darlings of the NFL!!! Pretty soon the patsies will suck again & then we’ll see the rats leave the sinking patsie ship!!! Just like the 60’s 70’s 80’s & early 90’s!!! Gase will improve this team as the patsies know the Broncos o line protected Manning all game long in the patsies loss!!! That line IS the line that Gase built!!! Then all you Tannehill haters will see that Tannehill is a great QB!!! BOOK THAT!!! GO FINS!!!

Didn’t care… I suppose they rethought that on the plane ride back from Denver.

I’m not about to say the Phins are going to the SB next year, regardless of what happens in the off-season. That said, there’s a team in the SB that was 7-8-1 last year, with a HC on the hot seat, an underperforming QB, and cut ties with a star DE who had legal issues this time last year.

If championships were won on paper, Marino would have had rings on all ten fingers and possibly a few toes. If this team finished .500, I’d be impressed, Major overhaul needed.

    Laces out, Dan!

  31. dolphincritic says: Feb 3, 2016 7:34 PM

Dan is as full of crap as Joe Rose! This team needs 2 corner backs, 1 safety, 2 linebackers, and 1 defensive end. We also need 2 guards, a backup tackle a tight end, and a big running back. We actually need a quarterback too but the Dolphins are still backing Tannehill. We must note that Jameis Winston was invited to the Pro Bowl over Ryan Tannehill. We are at least 28 million in the Cap space hole. We have a new coaching staff. These are just too many hurdles for a team to jump over, let alone clear. The Dolphins will have to hit on every draft pick, make a trade or two and excel in free agency. Let look for an 8 & 8 season and pray for a 9 & 7.

Dan is earning his pay by attempting to sell some tickets.

  32. cimmerian77 says: Feb 4, 2016 9:43 AM

Nope, need an offensive line: “THEY” make Tannahill awful.

  35. djscottyb says: Feb 6, 2016 10:22 AM

Yup that offensive line IS horrible!
And it makes our offense as a whole worse.

    4 tackles and a center.

Our starting guards have 1 year of experience at guard in college.
Billy Turner had no experience at guard.
Dallas Thomas played guard only in his junior year.

It’s no fluke that Lamar ran for 320 more yards last year when he had a true guard (Pouncey) and a true center (Satele) in the lineup.

Wanna tell me again how this is a good OL????

  37. beachsidejames says: Feb 6, 2016 5:05 PM

Tannehill….somebody should give that kid a medal for having to deal with the lack of protection they give him. I haven’t seen an offensive lineman on this team since Richie was here and aside from Pouncey I can’t name another one.

A team that didn’t car if they won or not? I bet they care now. Winning that game or not making the inexplicably stupid decision to kick in overtime vs the Jets would have put the AFC Championsip game in Foxborough, where I bet the outcome may have been different.

Absolutely right. Imagine what that’s like for a moment, to root for a team that’s right there every year. To go in to each season knowing that the difference between another ring and a near miss is made up of the smallest of things. Instead of going in to each season praying to be relevant. But hey, it’s only been what 15 or 16 years since the Phins last playoff win? These things take time
