Report: Kaepernick wants out of San Francisco

AP

The 49ers have been deliberately coy about whether they want to keep quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick apparently is less willing to conceal his wishes.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Kaepernick wants out of San Francisco. His preferred destination is the Jets.

It’s unclear whether the Jets want Kaepernick. They’d need to tread lightly in order to avoid a tampering allegation.

The 49ers presumably would prefer to trade Kaepernick, which explains why they may be creating the impression they are willing to keep him. As of April 1, his $11.9 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed; if the 49ers don’t want to pay that amount, they need to trade him or cut him by then.

The Jets have Geno Smith under contract, and 2015 starter Ryan Fitzpatrick is due to become a free agent in March.

It’s unclear whether Kaepernick can become the guy that he was in San Francisco. On Monday night, former 49ers teammate Vernon Davis offered a curious assessment of the struggles Kaepernick has experienced since starting his career with a bang.

“Maybe Kap is going through something or maybe it just wasn’t his time,” Davis told reporters at the NFL’s Opening Night festivities. “Everyone has situations, gaps and blocks, in their lives and they have to learn to overcome those things, obstacles. That’s all they are. He just has to learn to overcome and find a place in his mind and his heart and just get back on track. I strongly believe that he will do that.”

It’s looking more likely that won’t happen in San Francisco. While the 49ers hold his contractual rights, it’s difficult to make things work with a starting quarterback who doesn’t want to be there. The starting quarterback needs to be all in, in every way. If the starting quarterback doesn’t want to be there, the team should find one who does.

  1. What a idiot Kap is. Literally no NFL coach wants a QB who can’t throw accurately, Kelly is one of the few coaches who can probably make Kap look good and he wants out.

God as a Pats fan I hope the Jets get him.

  2. Doesn’t matter where he goes, if he does not put in the work, he will not be successful.

Being out studied 5-1 by your backup is not the road to success…anywhere.

“Let’s talk Colin preparing for games. And you know how they get iPads now. And they regulate, and they can watch how much film you watch. Gabbert, when he was a backup, was watching four to five times as much film as Colin was,” Bill Romanowski .

  3. I don’t blame you Kap! This is arguably, one of the worst professional franchises in professional sports. ALL of professional sports.
Get the hell out of there!!!

  4. He thinks he can pick a team, NYJ. Hopefully he meant as a backup. NY needs to stay clear as they’re moving in right direction. Kap needs to be a backup and grow up a bit for this year. Chill on his gear, and change personality for the sake of his career.

  5. Please God let this NOT be true. WE WERE JUST STARTING TO MAKE IMPROVEMENTS!!!!!!!

I think I’m going to be sick.

  6. I don’t get this. He’s got a coach that would be the most likely to get the most out of his play in his system in the league. This seems really, really dumb.

  7. They ran Harbaugh out of town and went from Super Bowl and NFC Championship game appearances to a one and done coach and a team that doesn’t even have an identity anymore. Hope that moron owner and his lackey are happy now.

  8. Lol
Never hated Kaep as a person, just thought he lacked a decent dress style and had no touch on throwing a football.

Niners fans have so much to look forward to,,
Chip Kelly and a rookie qb. Ballke in control, a defensive coordinator that was picked from the browns, and an offensive Coordinator from the lions.

    Nobody has it better

    ————————–

That’s a lot of ‘starting quarterback’ references for a guy that isn’t one at this point in time and may not be again.

  10. Is this guy even good enough to be making demands, or having a “preferred” team that he wants to play for?

The Jets have nothing to avoid nor do they need to tread lightly.

They have not said word one publicly regarding the situation and at this time have absolutely nothing to worry about.

    ================

And who cares if they did. After the Revis situation, the worst that would happen is they get found guilty and Goodell fines them $13, a packet of Gatorade powder, and 4 used “K” balls

  12. I suppose that he thinks that in NY he’ll make a fortune in off the field income. Personally, I think his act has already worn pretty thin and NY would just eat him alive.

  13. I find it interesting that Vernon Davis is giving advice about overcoming blocks. Davis hasn’t yet overcome Kam Chancellor removing his arms at the elbows for him.

  14. Packers should sign him and bury him on the roster so they are guaranteed to never get torched by him again.

  15. Doesn’t he realize a SUPER GENIUS will be coaching the team. A SUPER GENIUS!!! It’s almost as if he (gasp) doesn’t believe in Chip Kelly! Blasphemy!

  16. Kaepernick is the king of the douches. They bring in a coach who can save his pathetic career and he responds by wanting out of the situation. News flash dude, nobody wants you right now.

  17. The Jets would actually be a good fit for him. Solid paid of wide receivers, solid running game, solid offensive line. On top of that he is 1-0 against Brady/Belichick at Foxboro.

  18. “His preferred destination is the Jets.”

When things like that are written, they usually turn out false or get denied by the person himself. First of all, would he even want out of San Fran when Kelly is the perfect coach for his? And why the Jets? They have a starter. What about Buffalo? They have Greg Roman, who Kap is familiar with, and Rex who loves Kap. And no franchise QB there.

  19. I can only see 2 reasons why Kapernick would covet The Jets:

    1. He’s making an assumption that either he can beat out Fitzpatrick, or Fitzpatrick is on his way out. I would hate for Kaepernick to come in, bicep-kissing, and ruining the chemistry Fitzpatrick and Marshall built for a record wide receiver’s year, despite the poor peformance in the final regular season game.

    2. He misses playing for a brash locker-room coach like Harbaugh. You can’t fault a guy for looking for a fun work place, but he regressed in Harbaugh’s last year and Ryan hasn’t exactly been known for grooming QBs.

  20. Even IF the jets wanted him, they don’t have cap space to take on his contract. They would have to take Cromartie off their hands for them. Or take Revis and throw an O lineman in the deal. We all know how Chip loves overpaying corners and ridding himself of decent linemen.

  21. Kap would be stupid to want out of San Fran. Chip Kelly has done decent with terrible qbs. Just imagine what he can do with a decent qb that’s actually athletic.

  22. Hope the 9’ers tell him to GTFO and cut his inaccurate a$$. Once Harbaugh left, he was toast. He’s not accurate enough for Chip’s offense, so that wasn’t going to work anyway. Doubt anyone will give anything in a trade to pick up his $11.9 Million salary.

  23. Isn’t Manish Mehta about the equivalent of what you would find at the National Enquirer? Every time I can recall seeing his name attached to a report it was hot air.

Uh, no nonsense Todd Bowles is the coach of the Jets. Ryan’s act has been wearing thin in Buffalo for the past year.

  25. It sounds like he’s got an inflated idea of his value in the league. Probably a seed that was planted by his agent.
The agent gets paid more with a new contact, no?
This stuff is pretty easy to see through.
He should, more realistically, be thinking backup role.
He’s not a franchise qb. By any stretch.

  26. How about of CK becomes the QB of a farm team in Mexico City? He’d fit right in. In fact, he would look more like a hit man for a drug cartel than a QB.

    Does ISIS have a team?

    34- 43
    ====================================

    Why yes they do…

    It’s a JV team… and president o’crappy is the owner/gm/head coach of said team…

  28. i would imagine the jets want Fitz back……The Bills he could be sort of a gimmick qb and could have some success before there is film on him there but they have a pro bowl qb despite the joke that is. i could see dallas bringing in both him and Big John Football if he gets new contract.

  29. If this is true, Kap is dumber than I thought, and I thought he’s really dumb.

If he wants out of SF, he should beeline to Cleveland.

  30. Kaepernick will be traded, and I think he’ll bring a much better return than anyone anticipates. He’s just 28 and his career numbers are very good. The Newton Effect will boost his value, even though Newton is primarily a beneficiary of circumstances.

  31. I’ve grown to like Kap as a person and I wouldn’t mind seeing him go to an AFC team so I could root for him.

  32. The 49ers train wreck just goes on and on. The Seahawks retake this division in a cake walk.

  33. You Watch, Cleveland makes a trade with S.F. for Kap.
Swap 2nd round spots (32 and 37) and maybe a 4th rd pick from Cleveland to SF. His contract is structured in a way that’s not too risky. Maybe a change of scenery does him good.

Wouldn’t matter anyways… Roger would just fine Woody another 100k like he did for Revis. Pocket change.

  35. Kap’s girlfriend Nessa lives and works in New York City. That’s why he wants to live and work there.

  36. Thats basically Kap saying Geno Smith sucks, I want to be in the New York media, and I will be starter day 1.

  37. Perfect fit actually. Their veteran team would keep his punk arse on line and maybe teach him a thing or two about being a pro.

  38. I expect that the trio of new age/on-the-move quarterbacks will be constantly discussed this offseason, but I for one would love to see an NFL completely devoid of Kaepernick, Manziel and RG3 in 2016.

  39. Kap is perfect for the Los Angeles Rams.

The Rams are a QB away from going deep in the playoffs.

Plus he can give inside tips to the L.A. Rams about his former team that dumped him.

    Or the Las Vegas Raiders.

  40. Let him go as longs as he takes York AND Baalke with him, heck; even throw in a 7th rounder just for good measure. Baalke, please don’t screw up another draft by picking long armed players from Bemidji State that have “potential”. We need what they call…wait for it…football players, does anyone in our personnel department know what that is?

  41. His performance was directly related to the quality of the o line…when he first got his start the 49ers had arguably the best o line in football and everyone was calling Kap the next great quarterback. (JAWS) When the o line began to slip Kaps inability to go through his progressions and panic induced happy feet began to expose all of his weaknesses. Today, his confidence is shattered and it doesn’t look like he will overcome it unless he has a great offensive line…maybe Dallas.

  42. 49ers Were Stupid to Replace Alex Smith with this Clown! They would have Beaten Baltimore in the Superbowl With Smith!

Also they let a Great coach go in Harbaugh. 49ers Deserve to Lose!

  43. Kap is almost as bad as Teddy Bustwater and Much Worse than Christian Ponder!!! I would Much Rather Have Tim Tebow or Johnny Manziel. He is a disgrace to the game and looks unsightly with all those Tattoos. Looks more like a pathetic Gang Member than an NFL Quarterback!!! He Sucks!!!

Sheattles window well and truly closed. But as usual anything 49ers related they arrive. The Bandwagon rolls up. A few sad, lonely and dejected “fans” fall off. Desperately the search and scramble, looking for reasons to become relevant to 49ers fans. They crave recognition, frantically clawing at any shred of an opportunity to create their chance of a rivalary. A faux rivalry, only outshone be their faux dynasty, but still they cling to this imaginary float. Truth is they have nothing. An empty shell. Their only glow a single Lombardi for their “years of dominance”. They are dark, lonely, sad characters. Craving the Red and Gold reverence, seeking the history of a storied, world wide brand, only to be trodden on and forgotten like the majority of their fellow “followers”. Their final despair, a scared ignorance of reality. AFC? NFC? No one knows – no one cares. They are of no significance, even in their own city. Their stadium, old, decrepit, hollow. Stolen nickname, stamped on by a school. Their greatest ever players remain unknown to the throng. One day, in an NFL far, far away, they hope to be important. For now they are bitter, pained, denied status. Denied a stage. Denied real fans. They grasp frantically and kneel at the 49er alter of greatness. Dazzled, transfixed, wide eyed at our 5. Unfit for purpose they crawl back to the rain. Loss is tragic. Show pity fellow Faithful. They are worthy of pity at least. Just pity, nothing more. They are worthless.

  45. The woman Kap has been dating (Aldon Smith’s ex girlfriend) is the lead radio personality for Hot 97 (most popular hip hop radio station in the tri-state) during their rush hour segment, this is definitely why he is interested in the Jets but like most of you have said the Jets would be way better off with Fitzpatrick. Kap still needs to develop and the Jets are in win now mode with this roster

  46. Not much demand for quarterbacks who are really running backs. Part of being a quarterback is being able to throw a ball accurately. Must better NFL quarterbacks can also read defenses, change plays to fit pre son reads and know where to go with the ball. Kaepernick offers none of that. So, good luck to Mr. Kaepernick if he believes he s a starting quarterback in the NFL.

  47. Anywhere but Detroit. A team that employs Randy Edsall is doomed for failure.

-University of Maryland alum who suffered through some terrible years of college football

  48. If it’s true I don’t blame him. Chip Kelly has some good things to him. However, if he has five qualities and only one or two are good, I’d want to get the hell out too.

  49. number #1 reason why kaepernick wants NY:
    his girlfriend works there.

number #2 reason why kaepernick wants ny:
    his girlfriend works there.

  50. The Jets don’t have the cap money to pay him and sign Mo Wilkerson and the other players they need.

  51. Chip and Kap are a perfect fit. Kap needs to shut up, play ball and try to resurrect his career. Then maybe someone will want him.

  52. Three years ago Colin Kaepernick is what Cam Newton is today. The hottest thing going. Leading his team into the super bowl. For Kaepernick, it was only his first year playing. He was certain to get even better. We thought his future was the brightest, just as we think the same about Cam today. Newton hasn’t won any super bowls yet. We think we can predict the future, but I wonder how Cam’s future is going to go. Remember how we thought about Kaepernick?

  53. I am sure that when this guy gets to NY that Jets fans will celebrate that they now have the missing piece to put them over the top….only problems are

    1. He has no concept of what it means to put touch on a pass.
    2. He is not very accurate.
    3. Apparently, his work ethic to improve on points 1 and 2 isn’t real great.

    Sorry Jets fans.

  54. He’s the league’s worst QB. He may want out of SF but no one else is desperate enough to sign him.

  55. Kelly wants a QB who thinks fast and throws accurately.

Vick did neither, but he did run fast. Was not a good fit because he improvised instead of executed.

Foles was accurate, but they time his 40-yd dash with a sundial. With no run threat, defenses collapsed on him. Again, not a good fit.

Bradford seemed to be catching on in the second half of the season. Good arm, good discipline, adequate speed. The real shame of the Howie/Chip feud is that Bradford played well, and it would have been fun to see whether the young WRs developed in 2016.

Much like Vick, Kaep is the classic “extend the play” kind of QB. Which is exactly the opposite of what is needed in the Kelly offense.

I’d cut Kaep, draft a stud OL (Decker?) and use the cap space to buy more help on the line. Then I would give the ball to Hyde and beat people up. I’d also re-sign Boldin -he is what the Eagles never had, a tough disciplined route runner who can catch the ball in a crowd.

Not sexy football, but sensible strategy for a thin-talent roster. Run the ball, shorten the game, get some turnovers, take a couple shots with Boldin, and hang around for 60 minutes.
