Brant Boyer was a special teams player long before he was a special teams coach, and a good enough one to make a lasting impression.

After spending four years on Chuck Pagano’s staff with the Colts, Boyer was officially announced as the Jets special teams coach Wednesday. In 2001, Boyer was a backup linebacker and special teams captain on a Browns team that had both Pagano and Jets head coach Todd Bowles on staff.

The Browns are known for changing coaches, not necessarily producing them, but then-coach Butch Davis put together a heck of a staff when he took over in 2001.

Bruce Arians was the offensive coordinator. Pagano and Bowles coached the secondary under late defensive coordinator Foge Fazio. The linebackers were coached by Keith Butler, who’s now the Steelers defensive coordinator. Terry Robiskie, just hired as offensive coordinator of the Titans, was the wide receivers coach. The special teams coach was Jerry Rosburg, who’s been in the same role with the Ravens since John Harbaugh took over in 2008 and is considered one of the league’s best special teams coaches.

Arians was the AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2012 when he filled in for Pagano with the Colts as Pagano battled leukemia. He was hired by the Cardinals as head coach following that season.
