Ex-Panther Brad Hoover still believes the Patriots cheated

CHARLOTTE, NC - AUGUST 23: Brad Hoover #45 of the Carolina Panthers looks on during warmups before the NFL preseason game against the Washington Redskins at Bank of America Stadium on August 23, 2008 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Steve Dykes/Getty Images) Getty Images

As the Panthers try to win their first championship in franchise history, players from the team that lost in the Panthers’ previous Super Bowl appearance think they got cheated.

The latest ex-Panther to say so is Brad Hoover, who said on 610 WFNZ that he thinks the Patriots spied on the Panthers and knew their game plan.

“Can I prove they cheated? No. But deep down in my heart, I think they did,” Hoover said.

Hoover said the Panthers were shocked by the way the Patriots knew their offense in the first half, and so they made wholesale changes at halftime, and in the second half the Patriots didn’t know what was coming.

“At halftime, we changed our whole offensive game plan, and that’s one of the advantages of having that long intermission,” Hoover said. “How did they know what we were doing? The play in the second half was a lot different. We were able to put a lot more points on the board and I think that’s a part of it.”

Others on that Panthers team, including Will Witherspoon and some unnamed players have made that accusation. And former Panthers G.M. Marty Hurney has said there’s a “culture of cheating” within the Patriots organization. Patriots fans will think that’s sour grapes, but the Panthers firmly believe the Patriots won the Super Bowl by cheating.

“and so they made wholesale changes at halftime, and in the second half the Patriots didn’t know what was coming.”

How many 3rd quarter points did they score again??

    oh yeah ZERO!!

Stop pushing this narrative. They made changes at halftime and none of them worked.

  7. hairpie2 says: Feb 4, 2016 3:30 PM

Actually it was the Panthers that cheated by having so many players on PED’s.

  12. footballfanatic says: Feb 4, 2016 3:32 PM

lol 17 teams have come forward saying they take certain precautions against the Patriots and ONLY the Patriots b/c they are the only team that cheats and steals play books. I get one team having sour grapes, but for more than half of the league to have to take special steps b/c the patriots are known cheaters says a lot. And players and ppl on this thread get heated and run their mouth, GM’s and Owners are well above that pettiness, so for them to say things like this i think says a lot.

  13. lscottman3 says: Feb 4, 2016 3:32 PM

losers say such things because they can’t think that another team could possibly figure out their plays by watching film.

This year the Pats lost because the Broncos knew from watching film when the patriots center was going to snap the ball in the silent count.

When the patriots lost to the giants, the first time, the giants could tell when the patriots were going to run based on how the oline was set.

too bad the panthers didn’t think of changing their plays before the super bowl, i am sure rivera will because he is much smarter than john fox.

Anyone with a brain who is an NFL fan realizes the Patriots are chronic cheaters and liars!

  17. joedirte says: Feb 4, 2016 3:33 PM

Well the kicker kicking it out of bounds and giving Brady 30 yards to work with in order to get in fg range is whatvlost that game.

  18. butwhatabouttheintegrityofthegame says: Feb 4, 2016 3:33 PM

But passing out steroids to your entire offensive line is perfectly fine? Who actually got caught cheating? The panthers. So they’re really just upset that roidgate didn’t win them a championship

  19. refswin says: Feb 4, 2016 3:34 PM

Okay, let me get this straight. Your gameplan wasn’t working in the first half. You went into halftime and made adjustments, and they worked. I’m pretty sure this is a common occurrence when a team’s offense is crap in the first half. You make changes at halftime and hope they work.

  20. 49n123w says: Feb 4, 2016 3:34 PM

They will cry forever. They have no proof, a fact that they admit but still cling to the supposed cheating so that they don’t have to man up and say that they just weren’t good enough. That team had no class from the top down.

  21. jimmyt says: Feb 4, 2016 3:35 PM

    Us too.

  22. qbarrel says: Feb 4, 2016 3:36 PM

The Pats obviously cheated. With a level playing field, there is no way that the Brady/Belichick brain trust could ever compete with with the DelHomme/Fox juggernaut.

  23. REDSKINSFOREVER says: Feb 4, 2016 3:36 PM

Yep must have been cheating and the guy listening drank to much at halftime and couldn’t return for the second half? Or maybe he got stuck in the bathroom line? Or maybe they couldn’t remember the radio frequency in the second half?

OR maybe the panthers were out played and out game planned in the first half. Nah, must have been cheating. Yep cheating

  24. concoursrider says: Feb 4, 2016 3:36 PM

Oh for the love of God, give it rest already!

  25. dsigrey says: Feb 4, 2016 3:36 PM

Yeah because the blatant steroid abuse among that whole team doesn’t count as cheating. Explain to me how your QB, god I can’t even remember his name, was so good that year then never again (or before for that matter)? Get over it loser.

  26. fyxias says: Feb 4, 2016 3:36 PM

    Have always thought that.
The player would come back to the sideline and tell Coach Fox that it was like the Pats were inside the huddle.

We will never know considering Goodell destroyed all of the video evidence of the “long standing and systematic” video taping walk throughs and signals. Goodell destroyed them after the Senator from Philly asked that he turn them over.

  33. chesswhileyouplaycheckers says: Feb 4, 2016 3:38 PM

Of course he does, no one ever just loses. How was it that NE gave up 10 in the second quarter to them if they knew what was coming? And if changing up at half time made it so different why were they held scoreless in the 3rd quarter? If you can’t even make the whine match up with the game then maybe you need to up your whine game.

  34. routerunner says: Feb 4, 2016 3:38 PM

  35. mjdkid100 says: Feb 4, 2016 3:38 PM

    Hold on..2 things here
1). I thought it was just the defensive signals that they videotaped?
2). There’s no way they would know your plays when you’re calling it in the huddle. If they were on top of your audibles that’s one thing, but to “know your gameplan” is just a little ridiculous. They can watch tape and just figure that out.
People need to hop off the patriots sack. It’s so annoying when every time there’s a great player in sports we have to find a reason to hate them ie Brady, lebron, cam (him dancing). Just enjoy greatness and shut up

Maybe, Brad, it had to do with the Pats having the ball for 38 minutes in the game. Kind of forces the other team out of their normal game plan. The other thing, that Pats defense was very good. Maybe they just outplayed you.

Or maybe your idiot kicker maybe shouldn’t have kicked the ball out of bounds and give the Pats the ball at the 40 on their final drive.

Jeez between him and their old GM Hurney, they are a bunch of whiners.

  50. rob1729 says: Feb 4, 2016 3:45 PM

Hoover does realize that the Panthers didn’t start to score a lot of points in the second half until both of the Pats’ starting safeties were injured and out of the game? The Panthers didn’t score a single point in the second half until 3 minutes into the fourth quarter. And that was off an 85 yard TD pass on a broken coverage on 3rd and 10 on the Panther 15.

  51. ts1960 says: Feb 4, 2016 3:48 PM

  56. rob1729 says: Feb 4, 2016 3:51 PM

I just looked it up. The Panthers had 11 total yards of offense in the third quarter. Awesome half time adjustments.

  57. factman66 says: Feb 4, 2016 3:51 PM

They did cheat. The Patriots have stolen from players and fans, a lifetime cheating label is fair payment.

  58. phluffyclouds says: Feb 4, 2016 3:52 PM

    HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVER !!!!!!!

  59. sonhoodoo says: Feb 4, 2016 3:53 PM

Umm, the Panthers “game plan” was
1st down – Rush Stephen Davis
    2nd down – Incomplete Pass
    3rd down Incomplete Pass

The Pats had Seymour and Warren and Green at DE and pressured Delhomme all day. And the best part of Carolina’s offense was actually the running game. Their passing game that year was fair.

Also, Spygate would have given an advantage to the Pats offense, not their defense. The Defense sacked and hurried Delhomme all game. Not sure how many sacks were from this guy’s blocking, but I would say he probably needed to execute better and quit whining.

  60. fwippel says: Feb 4, 2016 3:54 PM

Hoover is likely right about this. Jake Delhomme started that game 1-9 for 1 yard passing, and then proceeded to torch the Patriots in the second half.

The fact that Roger Goodell destroyed the evidence on all this only solidifies the notion that the Patriots cheated. There was something to hide, and Goodell didn’t want to deal with the backlash.

Where’s Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis when you need him?

  61. footballboozer says: Feb 4, 2016 3:54 PM

  62. jmd0722 says: Feb 4, 2016 3:54 PM

What is with all these losers coming out of the wood works. Do you hear the Pats former players complaining they were cheated in their super bowl losses. As Vince Lombardi said, they know what we are going to run, its their job stop us.

  63. buckyfan1965 says: Feb 4, 2016 3:56 PM

Man…..this league is consumed with the Patriots. Wow. There is just as much focus on them as there is on the Super Bowl teams. Ridiculous.

  64. bullcharger says: Feb 4, 2016 3:57 PM

That is so dumb. All the points in that game were scored in the 2nd and 4th quarters. 0 in the 1st and 3rd.

So the Patriots knew their plays so well they scored 10 in the 2nd quarter and then they adjusted so well they scored 0 in the third.

    Duh.

The Patriots were by far the better team and almost blew it because Adam Vinatieri missed 2 FGs and Rodney Harrison broke his arm in the 4th and the defense collapsed on the deep ball.

They didn’t know the Panthers plays. They were just good.

  65. artvan15 says: Feb 4, 2016 3:57 PM

    It happens.

  69. jvw1982 says: Feb 4, 2016 3:59 PM

Patriot fan, why is it that the only winning team to get accused of cheating in the SB is the Patriots? 3 of 4 teams they beat have the same complaints, the Pats new their offense and defense better than they did,…we know for a fact the Pats got caught video taping other teams and the tapes were destroyed before the public or anyone besides Belicheat and Goodell saw them…..last yr was the only yr the other team didn’t claim the Pats cheated but then thats the same yr Goodell handed down a suspension of 4 games to Brady and lost of 2016#1 pick for tampering with the footballs after the refs had certified them…..Goodell is out to get the Pats because he gave them and the league a pass by destroying the evidence in spygate….bet he is kicking himself about that now, with the way Kraft and Brady are acting…..

  70. matt2131 says: Feb 4, 2016 4:00 PM

Well according to yourteamcheats.com the Panthers are ranked 15th in the league in cheating–about average, but way above the Patriots at 23rd. But I’m sure they are near the top on yourteamwhines.com (right after the Ravens and the Colts).

  71. harrisonhits2 says: Feb 4, 2016 4:00 PM

    Pathetic.

How convenient he also doesn’t mention that the Panthers had 3 of their players suspended for steroid use after the season due in part to the Federal probe of the team.

Its also clear that many more Panthers got away with using steroids and barely skated away from the Feds. The doctor involved serviced many players on the team.

So while he may “think the Pats cheated”, the Panthers definitely cheated with team wide steroid use.

Question : if you think Goodell is hiding something or has lied at all thru Deflategate do you also think he was completely honest and thorough in Spygate days given that he destroyed evidence in Foxboro?

    Losers are perpetual whiners.
Notice the Patriots dismissed the tablet failure incident quickly and accept the loss with grace.
They could have pushed Tabletgate narrative like most teams would do, considering that their tablet was down for 20 minutes… according to CBS. Don’t know if that is right..
The Broncos scored td while the tablets were down and scored only 3 points the whole second half while the Pats scored nine or more if they opted for the field goals. If that were other teams, they will exploit that to alibi their losing ways.

I don’t know how many times this needs to be said. One team definitely cheated in that Super Bowl. It was the Carolina Panthers. Nearly half their starting offense had prescriptions for illegal steroids filled within a week of the Super Bowl. This was documented in a 70+ count federal indictment involving their general manager Marty Hurney.

Any and all of this is readily available online with a simple Google search. All of this was national news for anyone who actually followed football at the time. That Panthers team can cry all they want but one fact remains:

THE 2004 PANTHERS CHEATED AND LOST THE SUPER BOWL.

    p.s. Go 2015 Panthers

It is because they prepare well by watching legally accessed film to study their tendencies. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a delusional hater who wants to rationalize the Patriots success on professionalism being based on cheating. The Panthers changed their game plan and mixed it up at halftime like the Pats do. They played very well in the second half and almost pulled it out except for their kicker blowing it on special teams. A well played close exciting game that the Panthers could have won just as easily as the Patriots is reduced to stupid accusations that smears the game and both teams. Poor sportsmanship. These haters are the Dumb and Dumber crowd that pervades our society.

I could go on and on but it is pointless to debate this with children that have no clue and still troll on! Go hang a participation banner losers! Goodell only had one choice, destroy the tapes and deny everything.

Meanwhile the Patriot fans love to dispute every charge, it some ways its similar to the Clintons, a criminal enterprise that challenges each and every charge, lest one of them sticks.

  128. loknezz says: Feb 4, 2016 4:53 PM

So if team A is stifling team B in the first half, forcing team B to change their gameplan for the second half…the only explanation is that they cheated during the first half to gain that advantage?

Don’t we see this practically every week where a team struggles in the first half and once they get into the second half they start clicking? Or a team excels in the first half to only fall flat in the 2nd half of a game.

Based on this logic, practically all teams cheat!

It was scoreless until a few minutes left in the half. Then both teams could not stop one another . Does he really think the Patriots defensive coaches don’t game plan. Give them credit they won. If you want to blame anyone…blame your defense. They had no excuse getting a record amount of completions throw against them.

Actually John Fox chasing points by attempting two point conversion and Kasay kicking the ball out of bounds with about 1:41 left on the clock is probably what cost the Panthers a win.

Only team busted for filming another team’s practice. Not a question of if the Patriots are cheaters. It is just a question of how often.
    ——————–

It is actually the cheating Broncos, the team that is in Super Bowl 50, that is the only team to get caught and disciplined for filming another team’s practice.

The accusations against the Patriots were debunked and retracted years ago.

Josh McDaniels was the coach and is currently OC of the patriots. He was previously employed with the patriots. So was the cameraman Steve Scarnecchia. Here’s what Mcdaniels said at the time about the patriots –

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that McDaniels met with his staff on Friday to explain the circumstances surrounding Spygate II, which supposedly arose from the one-time-only videotaping of a 49ers’ walk-through practice by a rogue video operator, Steve Scarnecchia. And McDaniels distinguished the situation from the original Spygate, which arose apparently from years of videotaping of in-game defensive coaching signals.

“That was practiced, that was coached, that was worked on,” McDaniels said in reference to the Patriots’ past practices, per Glazer.

And every year, they still make it back to the AFC Championship game. Sometimes to the Superbowl.

Maybe less focus on imaginary cheating and more focus on a solid game plan would suit these teams better.

I’m not sure this is all that surprising. Belichick is on record in saying he thought what he was doing was perfectly legal based on his interpretation of the rules. IMO, McDaniels doesn’t have the luxury of making the distinction since the NFL made it quite clear the interpretation was wrong. Well before McDaniels team got caught.

Not for nothing but keeping a running total of teams coming forward with claims of cheating says a lot in and of itself. Just sayin. I’d be willing to put significant money down there aren’t sources readily available to prove even half those “GMs and Owners” made those claims.

As a Panther fan, sure there is a degree of susceptible whether Patriots cheated or not.

But it is hard to argue when New England scored 14 and Carolina scored 10 in first half then New England scored 18 and Carolina scored 19 in second half (2nd QTR & 4th QTR).

I was disappointed we didn’t win the game. Whether Patriots cheated or not, I firmly believe that poor time management and error on Special Team was costly for us. When Carolina caught the ball inside red zone with just under 2 minutes, we called a time out. I was like WTF! Let the clock run down to burn time so Patriots wouldn’t have time to kick FG. Well, as we had it, Panthers scored a TD one or two plays after time out and there was literally all the time in the world for Brady to drive it down the field. Plus the fact that Kasay kicked a kick-off kick out of bound putting ball on Patriots’ 35 yards line gave them some advantage to drive down the field for a game winning FG.

So it is hard for me to point the finger at Patriots and accuse them of cheating?? I thought it was a hard fought game whether there was a spygate OR if Panthers played used some kind of human-enhanced substances. For a moment there, I thought we would have first-ever OT in the Super Bowl and that would have made it interesting for ownership meeting to decide if a Sudden Death rule should carry on or not.. but eventually they finally changed it few years later.

Anyway, Panthers will have another opportunity on Sunday when we face the Broncos, and hopefully we will win this one.

  199. throwingstones20 says: Feb 5, 2016 11:02 AM

    New England Patriots (14-2-0) 0 14 0 18 32
    Carolina Panthers (11-5-0) 0 10 0 19 29

So here is the box score the Panthers scored 9 more point in the second half than they did in the first. The Patriots scored 4 more points in the second half than in the first.

So wait by this logic that the Patriots cheated in the first half. Does this mean every time a team is down in the first half and comes back to win in the second half that the other team must have cheated right.
    1 2 3 4 OT f
    DEN 17 7 0 7 0 31
    NE 0 0 21 10 3 34

So this mean in the first half of this game from 2013 Denver cheated in the 1st half.

    DEN 17 7 0 7 0
    NE 0 0 21 10 3

Ha Ha Ha! Is this football or 1st grade. What a bunch of whine bags. They are following the lead of the Rams! The only teams I know of that have lost to the Patriots that haven’t whined are the Eagles & Seahawks! It wouldn’t have anything to do with your team sucking and even being lucky enough to get to the Super Bowl would it Brad? Winning n double ot against the Rams who were a much better team?

And if all the whiners think the Patriots are SO good at cheating?….then why did they ever lose to the Giants?…Twice!? You must be saying they are better cheaters than the Pats then!

  203. 46namredyps11 says: Feb 5, 2016 7:57 PM

  204. 46namredyps11 says: Feb 5, 2016 8:08 PM

Also I love how the destroyed video tape narrative gets some heavy handed revisionist history treatment. The tapes that were destroyed were tapes created multiple teams. Pretending they did anything unique amongst the teams in the league is foolish and inaccurate. In fact if they stopped video taping in 2007 than the accomplishments since then are more impressive because they’re winning while having a significant competitive disadvantage.

That being said, I still think the Patriots are a pile of t-rash and Tom Brady being LOUDLY booed when announced as MVP in the opening ceremonies proves I’m not the only one to think so.
