Peyton became “very emotional” in Saturday night team meeting

Zz0xNDhhM2U1MmZlOTc2MDdjMzY0N2Y3NWVjZTU2MTBhOQ== AP

I’d expected the endless hours of pre-Super Bowl programming to at some point consist of a report that Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning told teammates on Saturday night that he intends to retire after the game. He apparently sent that message without using those words.

Sal Paolantonio of ESPN reports that Manning became “very emotional” during the Saturday night session with players and coaches.

“Peyton told a few jokes to lighten the mood, but then he got very emotional,” team president Joe Ellis told Paolantonio. “And so did DeMarcus [Ware]. The room was silent. It was a very emotional gathering.”

According to Paolantonio, an unnamed source said that Manning didn’t state that he’ll retire after Super Bowl 50. The source told Paolantonio that Peyton didn’t need to.

It feels like the planets are lining up for Peyton Manning to finish a task that seemed unthinkable only five weeks ago. If it happens, I won’t be one of the many saying, “We should have seen it coming.”

Emotional because if his team wins, he can retire “on top”. If they lose, he’ll feel compelled to strap ’em on one more season and the body is aching. Sorry. You’ll have to give it another go next year.

Regardless of what happens tonight on the field, Peyton Manning need prove nothing to anyone. Great player.

  26. whywerule says: Feb 7, 2016 11:54 AM

Manning probably would have been a great player even if he had not spent his entire career on PEDs and playing for the two biggest cheating organizations in professional football. You have his years in Indy with the piped in crowd noise, tinkering with dome temperatures, deflating their own and opponents footballs, Dungy and Polian insisting on rule changes every season to help Peyton and their downy soft WRs, and then Peyton ends his career in the salary cap cheating and PEDs central location of Denver.

Again, Peyton probably would have been a great player without the PEDs and the cheating organizations he played for. Still, it is staggering that given his lengthy history of cheating and the cheating of his teams, he may end his career with only one Super Bowl win and a below .500 playoff record.

    Godspeed Peyton.

  27. the8man says: Feb 7, 2016 11:55 AM

If he were playing for an NFC team, it’d be easy for me to root for him. But I’ve hated the Broncos since Shannon Sharpe did his infamous call to the POTUS during a Bronco rout of the Patriots. Since then my hatred for the Broncos has only grown stronger.

So while, I personally like and respect Peyton Manning and wish him well, and hope to see him in the booth somewhere, I can’t root for the Broncos. I just hope that when it ends tonight, however it ends, Peyton can be content and happy with what he has done and comfortable with walking away.

    Go Panthers!

  28. jvw1982 says: Feb 7, 2016 11:55 AM

This game is all about the Denver Defense, if they can slow and frustrate the Panthers and get a couple of turnovers and keep the score low, they have a chance, just like they did against the Pats, if they can’t it will be a cake walk and dabbing will begin before halftime….

Peyton has exceeded all expectations, and the expectations were extremely high. What makes it more gratifying is that I also remember Archie Manning coming out of Ole Miss and being stuck for almost his entire career on a horrendous Saints team. It doesn’t surprise me that NFL ratings have skyrocketed during Peyton’s career. He had as much to do with it as anybody. What a class act this man is.

I just cannot get the idea of a superbowl blowout off my mind. I hope that I am wrong so that the game is interesting. The Broncos have a terrible history of blowouts even when facing mediocre teams. Two years ago, the Broncos were favored or the odds were close. They defied the odds and got blown out. They have another chance at redemption. The anemic offense makes the best case (low scoring game) at odds with other scenarios.

Wish I could still feel as if The Big Game was ‘important’.
But if I could I would say I’d rather see Denver win it.
Manning’s last hurrah and all that.
Panthers and Newton appear to be entering a window where they should be in this position a couple few more times.
So would seem more story-book for Denver to win.

Panthers have the big momentum. Denver D definitely has to play like the best Defense in the league. Manning would need to have a solid, not great or spectacular game.

Big problem I see for Denver is that they were designed to beat New England. Carolina is totally different style. Not a good match-up on paper.

But a couple big plays could make the difference. I think the turnover margin will be a bigger than usual factor in this one.

So many posters talking about various teams or players cheating. Way overblown in my opinion. Only winning matters in the end.

The only ‘certified’ cheaters are the Pats right? And they still have all their Super Bowl trophies. The home-run records from the steroid era in baseball still stand. See what I mean?

Also maybe it would more sense if this HGH substance wasn’t banned for people recovering from a serious injury and playing a sport like NFL football where they are destroying their bodies anyway?? But that’s a whole other argument.

Wishing you all a happy Super Bowl. Hoping the game is not a blow-out and the old man retires on a HiGH note:)
Panthers are just coming into their prime. Why….when they lost Kelvin Benjamin for the entire season I don’t recall Any pundits giving them much of a chance for a good year, let alone a great year. Imagine them next year with that WR back.

Denver 21 Carolina 20, but I wouldn’t bet the house on it.

Demaryius… Emmanuel… I know my passes don’t have the same velocity like they used to, but I want you to try your very best to get to the ball. Manning win SB50???? No way. Patriots beat the Panthers 65-14. Brady throws a record 9 td passes and the awesome Pats D gets a safety when Cam falls down in the end zone to avoid injury from a blitz by Amendola (playing cb). Patriots finish the season as the first 19-0 team in history. Brady is MVP and is given ownership of the entire NFL, all franchises included.

Honestly, that is the most shortsighted argument that can be made.

that Colt team with Manning was 10-6 and they certainly tanked it on purpose and could have won a few more games. Still they won 8 more games with Manning.

The same Patriots team went 16-0 with Brady. First time it had ever been done. Then lost 5 more games than Brady did the next year and missed the playoffs and lost the division.

I would say there was a massive impact without Brady there.

Ok people… Those of you haters that insist that The Broncos won their super bowls by circumventing the Salary cap… Here are some facts

    1. The Washington Post stated In a memo from the NFL to the Broncos, they ruled that this violation was unrelated to the salary cap, that it did not give the Broncos a competitive advantage, and that the Broncos did not make a deliberate attempt to break league rules regarding deferred compensation obligations. However, they still were stripped of a third round pick

    2. The same deferments were also made by the 49ers to Steve Young. So if your logic is rational to you, then you would also think that the 49ers cheated their way into their SB win w Young.

    3. The article stated also that in memos from the NFL that it was noted that the Broncos circumvented the cap to help pay for costs related to the construction of Invesco Field at Mile High. This was done by deferring money to later dates which translated guaranteed money. Also states were agreements to not waive players until a certain date (done to pay them later… As again.. Stated they had cash flow problems in helping pay for a new stadium)

In summary, yes they circumvented the cap…. AND the NFL stated no competitive advantage.. I CHALLENGE YOU TO SHOW THE WORLD how exactly that statement from the NFL was incorrect. Yes, I’m expecting Pats fans to bring up how the NFL is doing them wrong. However, go do your research and give details as to how the Broncos had a competitive advantage.

I’ll argue all day about the Pats being cheaters via their videotaping. As much as I’d love to say Brady cheated, the Wells Report isn’t conclusive. Do I think that he was hiding something when he smashed his phone? Yes… But am I going to beat pats fans over the head about that? No.

Nonetheless, I hope for a close SB50, but who are we kidding…Peyton has no zip on the ball. The only way for Broncos to pull out a miracle is if Peyton gets injured and Brock goes in. That Brock throws no picks, and their running game is on fire. Tall order considering Luke and the gang eats running backs. As for getting pressure on Cam…well, Cam is no Brady. Cam doesn’t go down very easily, more like a young Roth. Although, Cam isn’t as good as Brady in the throwing department, decision making, and whatnot, he’ll throw off the Broncos with a scamper or two.
