Patriots release Montee Ball, but most thought he wasn’t on the team

Kansas City Chiefs v Denver Broncos Getty Images

It was believed that the contract of Patriots running back Montee Ball expired on February 1. If it did, the team at some point re-signed him. Because on Tuesday the Patriots released his rights.

The league’s transaction report for Tuesday shows that the Patriots waived Ball, who finished the season on the team’s practice squad.

A second-round pick in 2013, Ball entered the 2014 season as the starting running back in Denver. He lost the job during the 2014 season and was cut just before the start of the 2015 regular season.

Ball was arrested February 5 after a dispute with his girlfriend. The waiver of Ball on February 9 indicates he was employed by the Patriots on February 5, which resets the “days without an arrest” meter to that day, just as it was once again approaching 50.

Wow. What a fall from grace, this guy WAS the future of Denver running. Ball was just run into the ground in college sadly, he had almost nothing left when he got to the pros.

Having watched Ball run during his time at UW-Madison, I thought he’d transition to the NFL and be an impactful player. Quite surprised to see how far he’s fallen off the NFL radar. I still think, with the right environment and coaching, he can get back on track. The off-the-field mistakes are a quick way to be out of the league in short order, especially for guys who haven’t produced when given the opportunity. Hope he gets the chance to start again and do it right this time, but sadly for him, it could very well be his last chance to make an NFL roster. Tremendous runner in college, but “dropped the ball” in the pros.

Chippy likes to troll Patriots articles cuz there’s very little written about the Dolphins after Bullygate. Nobody really gives a hoot about em because they really haven’t been relevant in ages. Hence, Chippys obsession with the pats.

  21. orange and blue owns the NFL says: Feb 9, 2016 6:54 PM

Yes, the Broncos drafted him, then cut him, which is when he got corrupted by the Patriots.
Just trolling the trolls with all their hgh nonsense. By the way, Harrison still have his ring? You know, the one he got while being juiced out of his skull?

  22. Teddy BH20's House of Noodles says: Feb 9, 2016 6:55 PM

Ball wasn’t very fast coming out of college. He became even slower when he gained weight in the NFL and didn’t keep himself in shape. He didn’t have a step to lose.

  23. worldizending says: Feb 9, 2016 6:55 PM

Ahhhh, the hate continues. the Patriots are again poised to make a deep run in next year’s playoffs. and all the haters know it…and it is driving them crazy! I am fine with the Patriots performance. They made it to the AFC title game despite being the most injured team in the NFL. No 1st round pick this spring….no problem. It just means they won’t have to come up with the coin for a first round pick. the Patriots will be in the playoffs again, and the hater gallery you simpletons.

In addition, according to federal agents and Harrison himself, Harrison received a shipment of HGH, with his name on it, just days before Super Bowl XXXVIII in February 2004.[6]

  31. plum54 says: Feb 9, 2016 7:44 PM

Pretty ironic Denver fans making comments on cheating when HGH Manning was their QB . They must have forgotten Von Miller’s cheating on a repeat urine test resulted in his 4 game suspension being increased to 6. On top of that due to Millers cheating the urine test the protocol was changed , changed due to his cheating .
    Yeah real classy Dennver Broncos.
Plus their super bowl wins in the Elway reign were tainted due to cheating the salary cap!!

Irony: patriots fans in 2016 talking about Manning alleged hgh use while a Colt when Harrison helped them to a super bowl in 2004!!

    ——————————

Barely hurts at all considering how well they did with massive injury issues on the O-line. Proud of how close they came. You can repeat your mindless, boring ‘cheat’ chant until you become blue in the face. It won’t help make it true for you or get your team to the playoffs.

Came within a play or 2 from going back to the Super Bowl–you know that thing the Patriots compete EACH and EVERY year for. I know that’s a foreign concept for Dolphin fans.

You seem to know pain like no other and it seeps through every sad, trolling post you make. I’m sorry that there aren’t enough Dolphin stories for you to comment on. Good luck with all that.

  36. plum54 says: Feb 9, 2016 9:04 PM

Take it easy on poor chippy. The only way he can feel relevant is throwing shade at the winningest franchise in professional sports over the last 20 years. Not only have his hapless little fishys not gotten to the big dance in over 30 years or won a playoff game in 16 they’ve only made it to the playoffs once in the last 15. Of course that has to be the Pats fault, it can’t have anything to do with how pathetic they are on their own. Big mean Patriots just have to be cheating. After all, in chippyland every little guy is supposed to get a trophy

Season recap: After gloating about the “karma” the Ravens and Colts supposedly received for Deflategate, a world of bad breaks descended upon the Patriots. Proving, no doubt, that the true bad karma belonged in New England over Brady skating justice thanks to Kraft’s buddy the judge.

Bonus: the Patriots trolls never got to realize their twisted dream of Goodell handing over the Lombardi trophy in shame to Brady. What a pity.
