Report: Eagles close to massive deal with Fletcher Cox

The Eagles have moved quickly to sign up their young players for the foreseeable future, and they may be nearing the biggest one yet this offseason.

According to Eliot Shorr-Parks of, the Eagles are negotiating a massive deal with defensive tackle Fletcher Cox which could feature more than $50 million in guarantees.

The report says the deal is “close,” and given the pace at which they’ve been passing out money to Lane Johnson, Zach Ertz and Vinny Curry, it’s reasonable that they’re trying to get as much done as quickly as they can. Cox had a year left on his rookie deal, after they picked up his option for 2016.

Cox had 9.5 sacks as a 3-4 defensive end last year, and will slide inside as they convert to a 4-3 defense next season, but he’s versatile enough to play a number of roles.

Of course, until one of those roles is quarterback, the Eagles still have a pretty big item on their offseason to-do list.

Guy had 9.5 sacks as a TWO GAP 3-4 DE. Moving back to DT in a 4-3, and this guy will be damn near unstoppable.

the eagles are going to improve a lot next season. they have a good roster that Kelly couldn’t maximize. last season was a sort of mutiny.

He deserves this. He’s such a hard worker and makes his teammates better. Great guy inside and out of the locker room. The deal will not deter him from continuing to produce massive numbers. He is the Anti-Suh. If you think 9.5 sacks as a 3-4 end was dominating, wait until he lines up in the middle of a 4-3 under Schwartz. Congrats Cox!

This is how the Eagles operated when they stayed competitive for the better part of 15 years in the late 90s and 2000’s before they lost their minds and turned over their entire operation to a lunatic.

The article asks if it’s a good idea. You can never let the best player on your team walk. Ask Detroit how it felt last year.

Good move, next up is the dumping of Bradford.

After this deal it looks like the Eagles really built a formidable 4-3 formidable defense under Chip Kelly.

I like it. In addition to building a beastly young DL (Cox, V. Curry, Brandon Graham, Bennie Logan) they are clearly building a strong nucleus of players.

Bradford is a free agent. No dumping necessary.

Good note that “unless he can play qb, the eagles will be hurting”. Nice top see Cox get the $. His previous comment several weeks ago, I am playing for $8 million next year so I am okay.

If the plan is to draft a qb this year or next and bringing back Nick Foles in the meantime while revamping the O-line and adding some defensive pieces, I don’t mind that one bit

Eagles fans are so adorable. Predicting sbs not 2 days before the ink is dry on the Broncos win. They are just as consistent as the real groundhog.

Signing a 3-4 DT to a massive deal prior to a switch to 4-3? Sounds risky.

4 years 22 sacks.. Soooooo Dominate!!! Pay the man ROTFLMAO

Great move now they need to some how re sign Bradford. Some people forget how good Sam Bradford was at Oklahoma and the fact he got drafted by the crappy Rams. But I really like Sam’s accuracy and the fact that he stood in the pocket behind the Eagles bad offensive line. This guy can win the Eagles a Super Bowl.

  24. chrisbr215 says: Feb 9, 2016 11:30 AM

Gotta lockup my main man Fletcher Cox the guy has been a dominate player, a leader on the defense, and has been super durable since day one.

  25. kfoyo808 says: Feb 9, 2016 12:06 PM

Get a short term qb (via trade or FA) and draft the long term guy, don’t toss him in immediately (McNabb I believe started in game #9 or 10 his rookie year)…D. O-line. QB.

  26. levanderwilliams says: Feb 9, 2016 12:46 PM

    Great news!!

Cox will wreak havoc on the NFC East this season and I can’t wait to see Eli and Tony running for their lives.
    Now that’s entertainment.
