Mayock calls Carson Wentz the draft’s best quarterback

It’s primary season in the NFL draft campaign, and North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz just picked up a big endorsement.

Mike Mayock of NFL Network came out with his first draft rankings of the year, and Wentz is atop Mayock’s quarterback list.

Jared Goff of Cal and Paxton Lynch of Memphis are, as expected, ranked second and third. Michigan State’s Connor Cook and Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott round out the Top 5.

The Titans, owners of the first overall pick, won’t draft a quarterback this year after drafting Marcus Mariota last year. But they could be looking to deal their pick to a team that falls in love with Wentz, Goff or Lynch.

Among teams that may consider a first-round quarterback are the Browns at No. 2, the Cowboys at No. 4, the 49ers at No. 7, the Bears at No. 11, the Eagles at No. 13 and the Rams at No. 15. The Titans would love it if one quarterback emerges as the clear-cut top prospect, and some of those teams start a bidding war for the top pick. Mayock thinks that top quarterback will be Wentz.

Bottom line: Mayock believes Manziel has the ‘It’ factor to reward the team that selects him by one day capturing a Lombardi Trophy.

“The kind of projection I want to make with Manziel is Steve Young,” Mayock says, referencing the Hall of Fame San Francisco 49ers quarterback.

    Just sayin’

strike while the iron is hot and trade bogus cam newton for the rights to carson wentz. newton will never ever win any super bowls for the panthers. wenz with mike schula will make the panthers a force for years to come.

He stinks. If you like a QB that looks good handing the ball off, he’s your QB. If you like QBs that go 16-29, 197, 1 TD, 2 INTs vs Jacksonville St. By all means take the bust of the draft

  12. granadafan says: Feb 10, 2016 4:17 PM

Excellent! Let the Browns draft Wentz instead of Goff. I’d hate to see Goff’s career ruined by the Browns like they do to every QB they’ve drafted in the last 20 years.

Subject to change. It’s way too early in the process.

And give the guy some credit. It’s not exactly easy to factor in off-the-field behavior and a player’s motivation and love for the game based on tape alone.

Are you sure the Broncos might not draft a QB in first round? If Peyton retires and they don’t lock Brock up to a big deal, they might need a QB. Brock is at the end of his rookie deal and the word in Denver is that Broncos aren’t interested in paying him $15M or more a year to stay.

True. Argument could also be that teams would be hesitant to trade up to number 2 knowing that another team could deal for the number 1 pick and steal their guy. So why not go straight for the number 1 pick and not risk losing their guy?

  29. cfos00 says: Feb 10, 2016 5:08 PM

The Bears do not need a first round QB. They MIGHT draft one late, but not a chance in the first. They need defense first.

  30. roddoliver says: Feb 10, 2016 5:19 PM

I respect Mayock’s professionalism and his analysis with video segments, etc. BUT he’s been way off as an evaluator, especially when it comes to QBs.

  31. 1nationraidernation says: Feb 10, 2016 5:23 PM

He had a a good Senior bowl week, but a rough game. Mayock spent the week in Mobile so he had a good look at him. With that said Goff played a little bit more difficult schedule than what they play in Fargo…time will tell, and we will all know more after the combine in a couple of weeks…..meaning Mayock has plenty of time to change his mind.

    Go Raiders! Go Reggie!

  32. argh88 says: Feb 10, 2016 5:25 PM

Mayock also thought Blaine Gabbert was the best QB over Cam

  33. tjacks7 says: Feb 10, 2016 5:37 PM

All of those teams you mentioned passed on Bridgewater and Carr (and one of them even drafted Manziel). So, in my opinion, they deserve their current QB woes unless they canned their scouts since then. It’s a bad time to need a QB.

  34. shlort says: Feb 10, 2016 5:50 PM

Reality is, there are no good quarterbacks in college. It has been a long time since colleges ran pro style offenses. The NFL is now suffering because of it. NFL teams have to pick quarterbacks and hope they pan out. Odds are, if you need a quarterback you will draft one who will be a bust.

  35. thegreenandcold says: Feb 10, 2016 6:05 PM

“If I had the first pick in this draft I’d go Khalil Mack.”
    “Over Clowney?”
“Over everyone, he’s far and away the best prospect in this class.”

He’s not right all the time but Mayock is a lot better at his job than most.

  36. thingamajig says: Feb 10, 2016 6:07 PM

Just because Mayock said Wentz is the best QB of this draft doesn’t mean he’s any good, just better than the rest.

  37. mrfrostyj says: Feb 10, 2016 6:10 PM

After RG3 I really don’t see teams reaching for QB’s anymore. I am almost positive that this will be the first time the Browns will use their 1st overall pick on a QB since Tim Couch. (also making it the first time mock drafts will ever have a Browns pick correct since they’re always predicted to pick a QB first every year and never do).

  38. wendyohno says: Feb 10, 2016 6:19 PM

and if Mayock says this, it must be true right? What about that guy with the hair from ESPN?

  39. tjacks7 says: Feb 10, 2016 6:23 PM

The major problem isn’t the lack of pro style offenses in college football. It’s the lack of responsibility given to the QBs. Very few come out with experience reading the entire field, making presnap adjustments, calling audibles, etc. Thus the learning curve is steep… Especially when the game is being played in fast forward in the NFL.

I think you can attribute this to the college football culture where literally 1 or 2 losses will ruin a major programs season and very possibly get the coach fired. So, college coaches don’t enable their QBs to grow for a couple years just to see them go to the NFL a year or two later. College coaches keep those responsibilities – like check with me’s – and ultimately don’t allow their QBs to develop to the level to adequately play in the NFL.

  41. mljohns says: Feb 10, 2016 6:42 PM

NFL Network chief draft analyst Mike Mayock rendered his verdict on QB Blaine Gabbert following Missouri’s pro day Thursday.

“Bottom line, he’s the first quarterback off the board, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Carolina takes him at No. 1,” Mayock said on Path to the Draft.

    Tread carefully…

  42. jmoney74 says: Feb 10, 2016 6:54 PM

Mayock has been pretty good. Obviously, you can go to any draft “expert” and poke holes in his forecast but he’s been pretty good on the draft board. You can argue that Manziel’s red flags were more personal.. as he started partying right after the draft.

  43. thefatlazygamer says: Feb 10, 2016 7:01 PM

    ___________

That’s a great bit of trivia because Manziel, Weeden and Brady Quinn were all first round picks but also all the second guy taken by the Browns. The first guys? Joe Thomas was a win, Justin Gilbert and Trent Richardson were disasters.

  50. codythao35 says: Feb 10, 2016 8:57 PM

Mayock said he wouldn’t draft Teddy Bridgewater either, but Vikings will win Super Bowl with him. What will Mayock say then.

  51. thebirdofprey says: Feb 10, 2016 9:10 PM

Mayock lost me a little bit when he said Blaine Gabbert was better QB than Cam Netwon.

One thing I will give him credit that most don’t understand is he is extremely knowledgeable deep into the rounds to 3rd, 4th and 5th round picks and even undrafted guys.

Being a son of a football coach and he puts in the research and time into guys. Most of these analysts on TV whether it is NFL Network, ESPN, FOX, NBC and CBS don’t put in the time. Much better than a guy parroting what another person said and laughing at his own jokes for a whole show.

  54. tonebones says: Feb 10, 2016 9:28 PM

I’d take Jared Goff if I had the pick. He plays against superior teams every week and puts up huge numbers. He understands the pro passing game right now. He’s great under pressure, and he’s constantly under pressure. Most guys that put up Goff type numbers are on dominant teams. Goff has played his entire career as an underdog and broken most Pac 10 records. This guy looks like the next Joe Montana. Wentz played in the minor leagues.

  55. icallbs81 says: Feb 10, 2016 9:31 PM

Please stop rating qbs from the air raid offense so high. Tim Couch, Geno Smith, Nick Foles, Mr. Football, & RG3 have done crap in the pros.

Did college qbs that came out of the run and shoot teach the NFL scouts anything.

    SAD.

  56. haluvagi says: Feb 10, 2016 9:34 PM

The only good and competent draftnik was Joel Buchsbaum who relied on his personal interviews and notebooks rather than satellite dishes and multiple VCRs like Kiper. Buchsbaum left us too soon.

  62. ballboy48 says: Feb 10, 2016 10:49 PM

    ==================================
Don’t put Bridgewater in a class with Carr. Carr actually drove his offense. He threw 2 TD’s to beat the Broncos and 4 TDs each’ against the Jets and the Steelers (8 of Teddy’s 14 TD’s came against the Bears and the Lions).

Bridgewater may have been more accurate than Carr, but Carr threw more TD’s this year then Teddy has thrown in 2 years. He averaged 50 yards more a game than Bridgewater and had a higher rating.

What do Vikings’ fans see that is so special about 14 TD’s, 9 INT’s, and 200 yards per game- and putting up numbers like this when defenses are keying on one of the greatest running backs in the history of the NFL, leaving plenty of opportunity for the passing game?

  65. jerrytown says: Feb 11, 2016 1:32 AM

  66. brownout19 says: Feb 13, 2016 12:07 PM

Hey Granadafan, the Browns didn’t ruin any QB’s, they just drafted poorly. That’s like saying the Chargers ruined Rusn Leaf. Colt McCoy was a third round pick for a reason – too small and fragile for NFL. Weeden was a baseball player who converted to football later – strong arm weak brain. Cracked under pressure, lacked accuracy and would rather throw the ball to a defender rather than take a hit. B Quinn lacked the accuracy needed to be a successful NFL QB. Manziel is and always was a head case who’s game does not translate to the NFL. If the Browns ruined any QB, it would be Couch because he didn’t have an O line or running game and got creamed too many times. If you look at the Browns current situation with Hue Jackson and Joe Thomas watching your blind side, Goff would be in a great situation.
