Vernon Davis heads to free agency with no postseason stats

Zz05Mjg4NTIyMzRjYzE0MmZmMTdjMzk3NGQ1MDhlZDkwNA== AP

Tight end Vernon Davis finally won a ring. But his contributions to the effort were minimal.

Traded to the Broncos from the 49ers in the last year of his contract, Davis caught no passes in three postseason games. He also had no receptions in a Week 17 win that clinched the top seed in the AFC. His last catch came on December 20 at Pittsburgh, when Davis had one reception for five yards.

For whatever reason, things never clicked between Davis and Peyton Manning, especially after Manning’s return to the lineup in Week 17. And so Davis, who said after being traded that he’d been dreaming of playing with Peyton since leaving college, ended up doing nothing with Peyton in crunch time of the 2015 season.

It suggests there’s a potentially great untold story regarding why Davis and Manning never connected. Maybe at some point that story will surface, especially as Davis tries to persuade another team to sign him to a contract worth something more than the veteran minimum.

This guy used to be one of the best tight ends in the league just a few years ago. Then again, playing with Kap and a beyond washed up Peyton Manning more than likely hurt him.

  2. blackstrat says: Feb 10, 2016 8:42 PM

Davis didn’t click with Manning or Osweiler either for that matter.
A pass receiver must try to catch the passes thrown his way even when said receiver is in traffic.
    Pretty fundamental really, right?
    His effort was absolutely pathetic.
    What happened to this guy?

I’m hesitant to place much blame on Davis. The offense was pretty terrible, which makes the super bowl win that much more impressive for the defense.

It isn’t a coincidence that DT had an off year, Davis did nothing, Virgil Green didnt do much receiving, and Fowler/Norwood/Latimer/Caldwell didnt do much either

I guess what im getting at is…PLEASE RETIRE, MANNING

But he will have a nice sparkly ring, so there’s that. Which is nice

Vernon Davis heads to free agency with no postseason stats …. and 1 superbowl ring

it’s ridiculous to call Peyton ‘beyond washed up’, the guy still throws great and is arguably the best football mind of all players in the NFL

Davis will probably still get some love, but that story will be interesting

  7. acebandito says: Feb 10, 2016 9:05 PM

Actually, it seemed like the 2 things that weren’t clicking for Davis were his hands and catching the football.

  8. Ugadogs21 says: Feb 10, 2016 9:24 PM

Davis is probably headed to NE or NYG.

  9. roddoliver says: Feb 10, 2016 9:34 PM

Sometimes is better to have no stats than have stats. Look at Carson Palmer, for example. And that ring will look nice.

  10. lscratchingthesurface says: Feb 10, 2016 9:35 PM

Maybe he could regain his confidence playing with his former buddy Alex Smith.

Chiefs could use a veteran at the TE slot.

  11. cdace13 says: Feb 10, 2016 9:43 PM

Would love to see a dynamic duo with Gronk!!! If anybody can get the best out of him again it’s Brady.

  12. finedaydesigndenver says: Feb 10, 2016 9:49 PM

Davis lost trust when he grew T Rex arms in that Steelers game. Made a “business decision” to not get hit on a critical 4th down play. I’m not sure if he got more than 3-4 all season targets after that. On this team, toughness was paramount. He got shut out when they realized he wasn’t on the same page. Too bad, too.. I was stoked when they traded for him.

  13. JSpicoli says: Feb 10, 2016 9:53 PM

He should take zero dropped passes as an angle.

What is ridiculous is to insinuate that “the guy still throws great”. Great for what? I’ve been a Peyton fan his whole career, but he’s burnt toast man. If you can’t see that I want some of whatever you’re smoking.

  16. doe22us says: Feb 10, 2016 10:00 PM

Why are people surprised, the guy has been a dud the past 3 or so years, Kapernick wasnt even looking his way because he sucked.

  17. tmsclade says: Feb 10, 2016 10:06 PM

Vernon Davis issues in Denver had nothing to do with either of the QBs throwing to him. If you keep dropping passes when you’re wide open, they stop throwing to you.

  18. zinnsand21 says: Feb 10, 2016 10:08 PM

He’s a flat out veteran minimum guy. He had some shots in Denver and dropped wide open balls.. That’s always been his achilles heel-no hands. Which got worse after he took some shots. He’s never been the same since Cam Chancellor leveled him up at Century Link a few seasons back..

  19. broncoscountry33 says: Feb 10, 2016 10:08 PM

I really wanted it to work for Davis in Denver but he had a couple of huge drops and he short armed a 4th down play because he didnt want to get hit. After that he sat on the bench and never recovered. If i had to guess id say he doesnt want to get hurt and is just collecting checks at this poinjt

  20. ngbradley says: Feb 10, 2016 10:09 PM

he’s just not very good anymore and doesn’t really try.

wouldn’t be shocked if he just retires. He’s a nice guy, but he prefers to do other things with his time.

Kam Chancellor happened to Vernon Davis. I think it was Dec 2012 or so. Dude hasn’t been the same since. YouTube that hit…”:^>

  24. 49ersdiehard says: Feb 10, 2016 10:41 PM

Davis is washed up. Had a lot of negative talk for his old team… Had two legitimate quarterbacks in Denver to help with his success to no avail… Catching doesn’t require knowing the playbook when the ball’s placed right into his area or into his arm’s reach, hands and/or chest regions… Again, Davis is washed up. He can’t even block anymore and that used to be another one of his primary strengths… I sure wished the 49ers kept Delanie Walker a few years ago in lieu of Davis’s inflated contract. Vernon Davis needs to retire – I concur with the story; he might get a one year, incentive laden, veteran minimum contract with a team starving for tight end help or just an extra training camp body.

  25. crabwasheld says: Feb 10, 2016 10:57 PM

Um this guy can’t catch and has never been able to understand a NFL playbook. There isn’t much mystery about his lack of production.

  26. captainwhodat says: Feb 10, 2016 11:03 PM

well, he did get a ring, and most of us don’t have one…

  27. doctorrustbelt says: Feb 10, 2016 11:30 PM

vernon davis has been a weaker, skinnier, less explosive, non-factor ever since the NFL released the NFL/NFLPA HGH Population Study.

  28. mogogo1 says: Feb 10, 2016 11:32 PM

It wasn’t just Peyton, he didn’t really click with Owweiler either. Best argument for him is that the offense simply didn’t suit him. Worst argument for him is San Fran was truly on to something when they let him go.

  29. wrathofrathman says: Feb 10, 2016 11:36 PM

He is so great the Niners got what, a 6th rounder for him?

Is Singletary still coaching? That’s the only place he should go…

  30. freepretzels says: Feb 10, 2016 11:54 PM

Davis dropped everything as soon as he landed in Denver and Owen Daniels had a resurgent year.

  31. db105 says: Feb 10, 2016 11:54 PM

Obviously there was no chemistry between Davis and the Bronco QBs. There’s also a possibility that Davis is washed up.

  32. hoss408 says: Feb 11, 2016 12:02 AM

Drops are a stat. He had at least one of those to go with the plethora he had since the trade.

  34. northoftheborder1968 says: Feb 11, 2016 12:25 AM

Yeah, a ring that he did absolutely nothing to get.. I’d be embarrassed to receive that.. Not one catch in three playoff games.. Yeah brag up he’s got a ring, jeez the janitor did more to deserve one..

  35. favresweiner says: Feb 11, 2016 12:39 AM

Life-long 9ers fan here. Vernon Davis was never the same after Kam Chancellor laid him out in 2012.

  36. badrobot74 says: Feb 11, 2016 12:44 AM

Davis showed what he really is… A passionless football player whose only good seasons came on the cusp of a promised payday which the 49ers gave him. Now, his advanced age stopped him from being able to “step it up” in a contract year. Whoever ends up giving him the veterans minimum should save their cash. VD is a bum.. And his natural ability has faded, with no work ethic or personal drive to fall back on.
Remember the haters…”Niners got fleeced.. VD and Payton will click.. Etc… ” Glad the 49ers at least got a pick out of VD. Broncos didn’t even get a catch.

  37. artworkworld says: Feb 11, 2016 1:10 AM

  38. 34defense2014 says: Feb 11, 2016 1:20 AM

rondomguy999, you are not suggesting that Peyton Manning actually has something to offer physically at the QB position? As much as I like Peyton Manning & YES, his mind & pre-snap Defensive reads, are absolutely one of the brightest, if not they brightest in the NFL… But Suggesting Peyton Manning can still physically perform his Duties as a QB on the field of play? On the NFL level, or any level for that matter? Is complete & Utter NONSENSE sir’. Could it be that you are in such Peyton Manning denial- That you have completely lost touch with the “here & now” reality? Peyton Manning has absolutely no pocket movement. If he he feels pressure or sees shadows, He taps out and takes a knee, rather then take a hit ( I done blame him, I’d do the same!) His arm strength is so, so HORRIBLE,- to the point, that he’s not accurate on a simple 5 to 6 yard crossing rout! I would be shocked, shocked if?-1, He doesn’t retire 2, Another team actually signs him to play the QB position on the field of play! I also would be shocked, shocked if a team OWNER does NOT offer him…To be a GM and or President ( aka John Elway ) Peyton Manning is all about making Money ( nothing wrong with that!) I can’t see him being a HC and or any type of Coach. No sir’ I strongly disagree! Peyton Manning will be the CEO of a team ( where the real Money is!) I can see him going to Tennessee, Jacksonville, maybe even the Rams? Rams would be perfect for Peyton Manning. The Rams could use a complete house cleansing on the Administrative & Coaching levels as they move back to L.A. With that Defense? With That Offense? A RB the likes of Todd Gurley?! Just add a few pieces via free agency and the Draft… That would make the L.A. Rams an instant contending team! In that market area? With Peyton Manning? It’s a Match made in Heaven! Peyton Manning could make himself and the Rams Millions! Peyton Manning takes a back seat to no one sir’… He’s ether the “Commander and Chief” or nothing…

I hope my NY Jets take a flyer on Davis. He still has a lot left in the tank! We need a good Tightend ASAP! Stop it already about Cam Chancellor nonsense! The man has been playing football his entire life! He’s not afraid to catch the ball over the middle! With the rules being as they are these days?! Who would be afraid to catch a ball in the middle!

Vernon Davis won a ring where he started the season. I can’t feel too bad for the guy. Someone will definitely give him a chance, but I personally feel Kam ended him.

Davis had crucial drops against the Raiders and Steelers that cost Denver a chance to win those games.

  41. Lancane says: Feb 11, 2016 2:57 AM

Vernon Davis will be lucky to get league minimum at this point, he has had three seasons of disastrous drops. If I was him I’d be trying to get Denver to give me a one year prove it deal, with an extension clause with a nice signing bonus.

9td 17 into 67qb rating……and not being able to throw down field accurately and without physically straining equals beyond washed up. Any QB not name Manning would have been benched this year.

  45. It Takes 2 Mannings To Equal One Brady says: Feb 11, 2016 8:29 AM

I’m trying to figure out at what point Vernon Davis was one of the best tight ends in the NFL??? I agree he is a freak athlete and he is a weight room warrior, but my recollection is that Vernon Davis has always had the potential to be great, but it never materialized. I always remember him being one of the biggest disappointments in the league. He “should have been” among the leagues best, but he just never made it

  46. stealthjunk says: Feb 11, 2016 9:48 AM

There have been several of these “Vernon Davis posted no stats” posts on PFT, but still not a single mention of the fact that he was actually pretty solid until he suffered a concussion in December. Since then, the Broncos have not been using him as much, especially with Owen Daniels stepping up.

  47. roxymuzik72 says: Feb 11, 2016 12:18 PM

Amazing they didn’t connect on the football field considering what corporate sellouts both of them are. Davis with his selfie IPO and Manning with pretty much any product he can get paid to shill to america. I’d have thought they would have had great chemistry

  48. thedom2424 says: Feb 11, 2016 12:50 PM

Dude is a basket case. He drops more passes than he catches. Something weird happened. He’s the Chuck Knoblauch or Rick Ankiel of the NFL.

  49. mikeinsanfran says: Feb 11, 2016 3:38 PM

Seattle fans who love bringing up that Cam Chancellor hit, which was in Dec. 2012, fail to mention that in 2013 Vernon had his best season as a Pro with 13 TDs.
