No offset language in Brees guaranteed salary

The Saints definitely will be keeping quarterback Drew Brees for 2016.

Wednesday’s non-news news that $10.85 million of his $19.75 million base salary had become fully guaranteed omitted a piece of new news that means Brees will not be going anywhere. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Brees deal has no offset language for 2016.

This means that, if the Saints were to cut Brees, he’d still get the full $10.85 million without reduction for any money earned elsewhere, meaning that the Saints would carry $20.85 million on the books for Brees in 2016, no matter what.

If the deal had offset language, the Saints could have moved on from Brees if the two sides failed to work out a new deal for 2016 and beyond, since someone else surely would have paid Brees that much for the coming season — and the Saints would have gotten a dollar-for-dollar credit for the guaranteed pay.

So as it now stands, Brees has maximum leverage. He can either proceed with a $19.75 million base salary and a $30 million cap number, or he can sign an extension that reduces the cap number in exchange for cash and other considerations beyond the current season.

I hope he is ready to be the only player with his giant salary. ME ME ME

Drew Brees is not the problem in N.O., so there is absolutely no reason to even consider him not playing there for the foreseeable future.

Good QB’s are so hard to find, 30m might be a bargain compared to the options out there.

I’d take it all too. Anyone that says they’d take less money is lying. You can bet you ascot that N.O wouldn’t hesitate to get rid of him if they could save 20 million.

Once again the Greed Monster crushes the Saints chances.

They should trade all of the offensive linemen and sign free agents. Let’s face it, they aren’t going anywhere and since he wants to make as much money as he and his entire offensive line then they will have to save money on the offensive line. Then Brees can think about how greedy he was while he’s lying on his back.

The most proficient passer in the history of the game, the only QB to break the 5K barrier more than once (four times), and otherwise flirts with 5K in nearly all other seasons with the Saints when he misses that mark. His season passer rating dropped below 90 only once (89.4) since joining the Saints.

The Saints are paying him exactly what he is worth. Good for him.

The Saints could do a LOT worse. So good for them, too.

No doubt he is one of the all time greats but his salary is handicapping the team from signing any significant free agents. Their defense is horrendous and they just cut arguably their top O- lineman Jahri Evans. If he is a true leader he will find a way to restructure and give this team a fighting chance to get back to being competitive IMO.

A lot of you numbskulls are really confused about who’s greedy. The salary cap is a concoction to keep the owners from paying the true value of the services provided by the players. It holds down salaries and thus increases the profits of the owners. Considering the billions generated by the game, thanks to the players, the players are all underpaid. And the owners reap billions. There’s your greed right there.

Drew Brees has earned every penny. And if his contract pulls a high salary cap number now, do you think that Brees sneaked it in there somehow? Or do you think that Saints management also participated in the contract negotiation? Besides, he’s repeatedly said that he will adjust his contract if asked to do so.

It’s time to stop calling Brees greedy just because the owners have put themselves in a fabricated salary cap dilemma.

    28th = New Orleans Saints

Anyway… Brees had a good season against poor opponents.

Saying any athlete deserves $30M for playing a game is ridiculous I don’t care how good you are.

They’ve had every opportunity to do exactly that and never taken it. Why? Because Brees is a great quarterback and has lived up to every bit of his contract.

People calling him greedy and selfish are stupid and don’t understand anything about the game or its salary structures. Do you realize that all those years Brees was throwing 5,000 and 40 TDs he was making like half what Rodgers and Brady were making? He’s earned his money, haters can go eat a bag.

It’s easy to sit there and say you’d like to have more money. And I guess that’s what I like about it. It’s easy. Just sitting there, rocking back and forth, wanting that money.

I just realized why people are so emotional about Brees…they don’t understand the difference in CAP hit and actual salary. Brees’ salary ranks him as the 9th highest paid QB in the NFL. The SAINTS structured his deal in such a way that prorations have created a $30 mil cap hit. The Saints are struggling to put a team around him because of loss of draft picks, draft misses (only 7 of the 22 picks since 2011 still on the team) and poor FA deals (Byrd, Browner, Spiller, etc.). Certainly we aren’t suggesting that Brees should become the 20th highest paid QB so the Saints can give that money to guys that can’t play. Can FYI…Jahri Evans wasn’t the Saints best lineman, those distinctions belong to Teron Amstead and Max Unger.

I hope he likes throwing from his back. There is no money for an offensive line with 20 percent of the cap devoured by one player. Now that he has lost his tight end he will have to throw it to himself as well. Glad I’m not a saints fan.

If you are going to call people stupid, you will probably look smarter if you don’t just make up facts. During the 4 years that Brees threw for 5000 yards, he was never “making like half of what Rodgers and Brady were making.” In fact, during 2 of those years he was making more than Brady, and during 3 of those years he was making more than Rodgers.

Can’t believe the Saints have allowed Brees to hold all the cards once again. Oh wait, it’s the Saints. Worst team at managing personnel in the NFL.

Worst team at managing personnel?? Saints son a Super Bowl with that management LOL
