Dolphins want to keep Lamar Miller

AP

As the Dolphins head into free agency, they’re prioritizing running back Lamar Miller.

Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins are more bullish on Miller than on fellow free agent to be Olivier Vernon, and the Dolphins “definitely” want Miller back in 2016.

But, of course, the question is whether the Dolphins will spend the money it takes. Beasley pegs Miller’s asking price at $5 million a year, which is a lot for a running back in today’s NFL. Last year, the only free agent running back who got more than $4 million a year was DeMarco Murray, who got a five-year, $40 million deal with the Eagles.

In his four seasons with the Dolphins, Miller has 638 carries for 2,930 yards and 19 touchdowns. Last year he started all 16 games and had 194 carries for 872 yards and eight touchdowns.

  1. I think Miller and Doug Martin are both about to get paid.. Dolphins will have a tough time with any of their free agents, with the contract they gave Suh.

  2. Miller is not worth 5 million, I would offer 4 yr 15 million with a team option for yr 5 at 4 million…..if Murray only got 5 million last yr from only one team, no way Miller or Martin from TB will get it…..RB are usually hurt and most teams are going with rb by committee…..if he wants 5 he will be disappointed…..

  3. Chadsmith013 , He’s not taking a paycut, the Dolphins can only convert money from this season into a signing bonus, increasing his cap money over the following 3 years by 4-5mil a piece, equaling more guarenteed money for him.

On Lamar Miller, Young player who stays out of trouble, home grown, native player. He has a great combination of speed and size. The problem with lamar miller is he gets stuffed way too much behind the line of scrimmage. Were talking about 5 yards on 10 carries sometimes. Some of it is the offensive line, but someone of it is him. Regardless, hes a VERY young player, still growing, who’s not oft injured and doesnt have much tread. sign him LONG LONG term and call it a day. lock him up for 5 years 25 million. backload it.

  4. Good… Cause nobody wants him… I would rather draft a new guy if I were Miami. I only see stats and they say nothing special to me.

Well maybe if they didn’t take him out of the game and forget about him after every big play he makes. He had some huge games and some that is was well on his way and they seem like they forget he was on the team. I wouldnt want to come back to Miami if I were miller. If nobody wants to lay I’d do a one year prove it deal.

He will sign with us, the Patriots, for a vet minimum contract. Just to win a ring next year. Just like Revis did last year.
    *********************************************************

You do know Revis made 11 million that yr, far from the vet minimum

  6. Bullcrap. He really is a very good player and I expect him to easily get 5 mill a year. He has all the skills to be Jamaal Charles lite if put in the right spot.

  7. Doesn’t matter who coaches Dolphins…as long as they have Ross as owner…they will need to over pay to attract anyone.

    Is a bad organization

  8. the number one thing the Dolphins need to do is get rid of Tannehill, how many years do you put up with a QB that isn’t going to ever get it done against Brady in the same division? It’s been 4 now… are the phins going to wait 5 or 10 years in ‘rebuilding’ mode?

Tannehill has always been mediocre and needs to go.

  9. They’re in cap hell and rebuilding like every other team in the AFC East, outside of NE.

If you cheat the teambuilding process, you just shoot yourself in the foot.

Mike Tannenrube had the Jets in cap hell over and over because he’s arrogant and dumb. He’s doing the exact same thing down in Miami.

Tannehill set to make 17 mil in 2017.

    LOL

  10. tylawspick6 says:

tannehill will never see that 17 mil in 2017…his will be re-done too..

and to randomguy that says to get rid of tannehill…ok cut him and then what? like there are so many good QB’s just laying around…

  11. Miami is not cap strapped…..They can easily create 40 to 50 million in cap space by releasing some underachieving players and redoing the Suh deal. Although they will run into trouble at some point with the Suh deal. There is really no way around it.

Suh’s contract will be re-done..why is that so hard for everyone to understand?
    – – – – – – – – – — – – – – – – – – – – – – –
His contract is fully guaranteed, what do you not understand. The only option is to spread that money over the next 5 years…..Go ahead and do it…..then you have challenges next year when guys like Cameron Wake, and Jordan Cameron are UFA’s and Suh will count for 25 cap, and even more difficult time the following year when Brent Grimes, Rashad Jones, and Jarvis Landry , and Suh will be up to 28 million, and if you want to cut him it will cost the same amount anyway….Better off biting the bullet this year I would think…but maybe you don’t. Either way the guy is getting paid as it is fully guaranteed one way or the other.

  13. Miller is a great athlete, loved by locals but his ego boasts a runner that doesn’t exist.
He is a good running back, thats it.

Has problems blocking and picking up the blitz.
Has improved catching out of the backfield.
Has only ONE 100 yard game vs AFC East
Averages only 2 100 yard games a year.
(Had a 3rd this year but it took a 17 yard fumble to get to 113 vs. BAL)

ONE THIRD of his 2015 yardage came in 2 games
against the worst teams in the league (at the time)
averaging 10 carries and 41 yards during the rest of the season.

A good offensive line, proper coaches and mindset and he can improve nicely
and I’d definitely like to have him back – but on a incentive heavy, backloaded contract.
5yr $20 mil. & spike it with money he may never see.

And yet somehow they were able to attract and sign the top young coaching candidate available. Ross will not impact coaching, except to give them anything and everything they want.

  15. Fact not dolphin fiction is the 60 million is fully 100% guaranteed…the only option is to defer over the next few years….really it’s a mute point….it was way, way , way to much money….I love Suh, but you can have him at that price, because all it means is you cant have anybody else.

    Go Dolphins. Go Salary Cap!

  16. Word is the onus is on pass rushers this season and that the team would be more bullish on O.V..

This player is an enigma much like the team. He has averaged only 12 carries for his last 3 full seasons. 12.5 carries for his 1k yard season.

The team runs a shotgun set up mostly along with play action. Most other teams are quite aware of this.
Miller might excel in a more traditional setting with a strong o-line.

Early on talk was he couldn’t hold up and the reason for so few carries. Later on talk was it was to keep his price lower as his contract renewal neared.

  17. The dolphins have never used Miller correctly they bench him every single time he gets hot, as a dolphins fan i hope he goes to the Patriots, he’s a good guy and deserves to play for a winner.
    Good luck Lamar!

  18. Let miller go, draft Alabama RB, bye bye OV, every small cb we have, draft Ol, Lb, Cb, S, Defense heavy Draft this year! Trade Dion, Grab biggest TE, more speed and power on D….

  19. If Miami really wants to get better quick, trade Pouncey. Build a team that is not related to the misery of the past. Find nasty players that match what Suh and wake will need to get the Ring.

  20. the number one thing the Dolphins need to do is get rid of Tannehill, how many years do you put up with a QB that isn’t going to ever get it done against Brady in the same division? It’s been 4 now… are the phins going to wait 5 or 10 years in ‘rebuilding’ mode?

I’m sure you realize, Tannehill is 3 – 3 against Brady over the last 3 years. Or maybe you don’t……

  21. He won’t be anything special without an o-line so there’s no point paying Miller 5 mil. Let him walk if he won’t take less.

  22. Dolphins are a terrible team and their front office has no clue what they are doing. Suhs big deal is going to kill them in the long run and set them back even further. Lamar miller isnt a top rb and if they sign him to that money its a big mistake

Every coach they sign…is young top talent…Hell, Jimmy Johnson , best coach Dolphins have had since 85 [ last time they were relevant]…suffered there.

Is very poorly led team that cannot get direction. They spend $millions on Suh….why?…Cause Ross needs to fill seats…then they have zero depth…Name a team run worse than Dolphins????..not many

ASK REX RYAN…is easy to get up for your SuperBowl…So tell me, what was Dolphins record after those wins???…Same as jets? Bills?…LOSING STREAKS….Patriots played final game like an exhibition game…

  25. Get rid of the QB. Draft a 50/50 prospect.
RT stats are very similar to those of Tom Brady’s first four years. He has beaten every QB (at least once) drafted the same year as him. RT is not the problem. Play calling that was as predictable as playing split screen madden with your best friend has held RT back. Uninspiring coaching has done nothing to help RT. And let’s not talk about the oline. All you have to do is watch super bowl 50 to realize what a leaky OLine can make even the NFL Mvp look like.

  26. A lot of players have joined the team and some came with a 1 year prove it contracts. Dustin Keller, Brett Grimes, Knowshon Moreno came at a fair price and others if you look deeper into it.

Sure you could say there are limitations coming this season and its hard to know how it pans out. But I’m sure as/if players leave on their on accord there will be others ready to join.

This is a fickle league with lots of turnaround and that is the beauty of it.
