After the Seahawks beat the Packers in the 2014 NFC title game, Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson gave the credit to the win -- and the double-digit hole from which his team had to emerge due to four Wilson interceptions -- to God. After the Packers beat the Seahawks in Week Two of the 2015 season, Rodgers took a jab at Wilson for his belief that God chooses sides when it comes to football. (The gesture apparently prompted Rodgers’ brother to choose sides against Aaron.)
Now that a memorable (but ultimately unsuccessful) season has ended for the Packers, Rodgers has taken to Twitter to renew his tongue-in-cheek gratitude to entities with better things to do than nudge a football in one direction or the other.
“Have to start my return by thanking @TheTweetOfGod for an exciting season,” Rodgers said. “Tell your sons mother I said thank you for those two throws.”
He’s referring to a pair of Hail Mary throws that were among the most exciting plays of the season. One came on a Thursday night in Detroit, when Rodgers launched a rocket that nearly hit the rafters at Ford Field. The other came at the end of a thrilling division-round matchup at Arizona, when Rodgers’ knack for connecting on deep desperations throws made some (OK, me) suggest that the Hail Mary play should be made a standard part of the team’s offense.
Some (OK, not me) will undoubtedly take offense at Rodgers’ tweet, calling it disrespectful or sacrilegious. That’s not my call. Besides, I’m not the one who’d be going to hell over it.
Then again, it’s possible God already has taken revenge on Rodgers by reaching down with a pinky toe and preventing a certain coin from flipping.
OK, that’s the one I’d be going to hell for.
