Packers and Colts to open preseason in Hall of Fame Game

Aaron Rodgers AP

Since three of the key pieces are already going to be there, it only makes sense that the Packers and the Colts will open the season in the Hall of Fame Game.

The expected news was made official Tuesday, with the Packers and Colts to kick off the exhibition season with an Aug. 7 game in Canton, Ohio.

It’s going to be a big weekend for those two teams anyway, with Brett Favre, Marvin Harrison and Tony Dungy to be enshrined in the Hall that weekend.

Now, Green Bay and Indy get the privilege (?) of starting camp a week early and an extra preseason game.

Aaron Rodgers, who is on a bit of a roll today, will obviously be thrilled by this development. since he’s already declared he didn’t want to be in it 11 months ahead of time.

With these teams, they can call it the “Almost But Not Quite Bowl”.

The good news is that after a long hiatus, we get pro football again! The bad news is most of these guys won’t be pro football players for very long. They will be playing their butts off for this opportunity though, which immediately makes it better than the pro bowl.

Damn. Nobody wants to play 5 preseason games. Don’t understand why the hof game can’t be pushed back a week. I’m sure one team would gladly give up a preseason home game.

  6. cinvis says: Feb 16, 2016 2:43 PM

I don’t get players who want less preseason games. The starter are going to play the same amount in the Preseason whether there are 2, 4, 5 or 10 preseason games. The rest of the time is for young players trying to make a squad. The CFL went to 2 preseason games and the quality of play in the first month of the regular season is awful. There just isn’t enough time in 2 games to get your starters ready AND evaluate young players. Aaron, take your 3 snaps. Hand it off 3 times and walk off to a standing O. Tough extra week of work.

  7. chawk12thman says: Feb 16, 2016 2:46 PM

The HOF Game should be held on Thursday two days before the Saturday kick off. Then the teams still play the 4 pre-season games and not have to have an extra game. The ceremony and pomp and circumstance could all occur that week without much problem.

  8. whatjusthapped says: Feb 16, 2016 2:46 PM

The only good news is that the first preseason game comes with the expanded roster size of 90 so you will get to watch plenty of prospects who will never make it to the regular season, with the exception of those being picked up by the Vikings off the Packer waiver wire.

What have the Vikings ever accomplished that makes their trolls feel like they deserve the right to bash, mock, and ridicule the Packers?

Seriously, the Vikings are a team that holds the NFL all-time record for postseason futility, and it’s not even close. And this includes the teams from the early years that had a huge head-start on them. Cleveland, Buffalo, Detroit, you name any team……the Vikings have lost more often than any of them in the postseason.

The Packers, on the other hand, have won more championships than any other NFL team, in the same period of time. Perfect opposites.

The Viking trolls are screaming for respect they don’t deserve and have never come close to earning. They are trying to affect the respect the Packers have earned and the pride we enjoy in them as fans. The trolls are knocking their heads against the wall. I can only assume because it feels good. Smart.

We know who the Packers are. The Viking troll taunts are not working. It only makes the source look desperate and foolish.

Aaron does not want to play. He will pout. And mumble to himself. But he won’t play video games. Or throw for more than 77 yards. Or take risks like Favre. Or hurt his stats with interceptions. Or win games all by himself. Aaron learned from Brett. Maybe he’ll end up liking Minnesota more, too.

Aaron Munn’s contract goes through 2017 and after that, my guess is he wants to be closer to his Lady Love, his commercials, and probably acting aspirations, given his huge ego, which spells out Los Angeles (Rams or Chargers). If that happens, all anyone will ever hear is how GB got rid of Rodgers before he could hurt the team, etc. Never will you hear of his stats, his wins, nothing of the sort. Least not until he makes the GB ring of honor and the HOF, pretty much like it has been with Favre.

GB can only live in the past when it makes them look good. At present, they are a team on the decline, they have no future and the best part is 31 other teams know it. How can they be so blind??? Does cheese cause blindness?

Sorry, but I don’t think it’s unlikely at all, as this person is only out for himself and loyalty is secondary. He comes off as a total egomaniac and only the Cheeseheads can’t see it. Furthermore, good luck with Hundley. Chances of your team having a third really good QB in a row is the equivalent odds of winning the lottery. It probably ain’t gonna happen and it’s back to the 70s and 80’s for you. Again I say, sorry Cheeseheads because you only have two more years to win the SB and you have to get by Zim’s defense which isn’t gonna be a cakewalk.

    Hey Punk,

You lie. In 2013, Aaron Munn signed a five year contract for 110 mil dollar contract extension. Years done, 2013, 2014, 2015, which leaves 2016 and 2017 until the contract ends. And the way you Cheeseheads denigrate my state and football team, I feel the designation of “Turd Bay” to be appropriate. You’re gonna lose your Golden Boy. Live with that fact.

I looked it up and while technically you are right, do you honestly think if Rodgers play declines along with the rest of the team, they are going to keep him at 20M salary per year with a cap hit of 20.9M and 21.1Mcap hit in years ’18 and ’19?

    Linda,
For one thing, teams cap numbers go up just about every year if not in two years.
Rodgers contract can be readjusted for a lower base number, for a larger signing bonus.
They did this with Favre, Driver.
Rodgers plays a position that the larger money can be diverted to signing bonuses over the last part of his contract, or they can extend it again for a lower cap number.
He’ll be 36 in 2019. He’ll have at least 3 more good years left.
No way GB lets him go, unless they hit it big again with another QB.
Also I don’t think Rodgers is that type of a player that needs to be the highest paid player.
It pains you to really understand that Rodgers will be in GB for another 7 or 8 years.

But what if his play doesn’t decline? The vast majority of elite QBs don’t hit the wall until their late 30s. It’s a safe bet that Rodgers will likely get another bank busting extension with the Packers before the current contract expires, and he will earn every dollar of it.

Meanwhile, AP clearly hit the wall in the second half of last year and the Vikings didn’t ask him to take a pay cut, so maybe you should look to the Vikings front office for stupidity.

Well they do have more losses than any other team – that is a product of them having earned their way into the playoffs so frequently.

The Vikings have more playoff losses than Cleveland, Buffalo and Detroit. They also have more playoff wins, even though as you so eloquently pointed out, all three teams have been in the NFL longer.

‘The Packers, on the other hand, have won more championships than any other NFL team, in the same period of time. Perfect opposites.’

I give you credit for not using the term “World Championships” as some of your misguided fans do.

But let’s be real – a “championship” won when the Packers didn’t even have the most wins in a season when there weren’t any playoffs is not much to brag about.

“The Viking trolls are screaming for respect they don’t deserve and have never come close to earning. They are trying to affect the respect the Packers have earned and the pride we enjoy in them as fans.”

The Vikings deserve respect because they are one of the top 10 franchises in the NFL for winning percentage.

The Vikings deserve respect because they rarely go more than a couple years without posting a winning record and have never gone more than 3 seasons without having a winning season.

Green Bay has some “championships”, but the team has failed to win more than 50 percent of their games 38 times.

“We know who the Packers are. The Viking troll taunts are not working. It only makes the source look desperate and foolish.”

We do know who the Packers are. And they aren’t taunts, they are facts. Something that you need to learn to comprehend so you stop embarrassing yourself.

Umm. I know they’re your favorite team and all, but you’re describing the criteria for earning a Participation Trophy. I’m describing the basis for winning four Lombardi’s on top of nine other championships, old or not (ala New York Yankees.)

Do you see the difference? I’m talking about winning, and you’re talking about Maybe Next Year blue ribbons. One situation earns and deserves respect, and the other deserves an attaboy.

This GB is on the decline is humorous… They are one of the best teams in the NFL so yes… eventually they will decline… but if the decline your currently talking about is the team that Went to the NFC Title game 2 seasons ago to a team that was 1 play away from the NFC title game away last season…. it isn’t as DRAMATIC as some of you people would like to drum it up to be.

Yes the Packers had a down season, there were MANY reasons. Jordy Nelson being hurt was one of them, many people feel Lacy and his lack of focus contributed…. but I feel the biggest factor was the play calling. That is something that I feel that won’t be an issue you next season. So hopefully Lacy and Jordy can come back ready to play… and TT can add 2 or 3 more starters and another role player/project as he usuall does each draft.

Bookmark this thread. If it lasts until the 2018 season, I’ll bet money GB not only DOESN’T give Rodgers a high dollar extension again, but releases him if he is unwilling to take a MAJOR payCUT regarding any extension.

Only a potential Super Bowl winning QB gets that kind of money toward the end of his career. Unless major changes happen regarding GB defense and to a lessor degree the offensive line, the only way GB goes to the Super Bowl in the coming years (like the next 3-5 years) is if they buy a ticket! I’ll even go out on a limb and say they don’t even make the playoffs in the 2016 season.

I think it’s great that we get to kick off the preseason with 2 Superbowl pedigreed teams.

    It’s better football.

    For better people.
