DeMarcus Ware could be asked to take a pay cut, or get cut

Indianapolis Colts v Denver Broncos Getty Images

The first expensive veteran the Broncos need to get off their books for 2016 is quarterback Peyton Manning. The second may be outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware.

Ware, who will turn 34 this offseason, is scheduled to count $11.7 million against the Broncos’ 2016 salary cap. With Von Miller’s franchise tag due to check in at $13.4 million, the Broncos may decide they’re not willing to spend $25.1 million on two players at one position.

Jeff Legwold of ESPN reports that if Miller doesn’t want to re-work his deal, there’s a chance he’ll be gone. Legwold also points to the possibility that Ware, who has a history of back and neck injuries, could choose to retire.

Manning and Ware were the offensive and defensive captains of the Super Bowl champs. They may both be elsewhere in 2016.

Hopefully he goes somewhere in the AFC East so that he can continue to haunt Brady’s life. Oh man he ate their lunch lololololololol

Broncos fan here. I really hope D Ware is open to a pay cut. He has been instrumental to Miller’s development and been a great leader behind the scenes. I sure hope he has managed his money well…

  3. joeytorontosucks says: Feb 22, 2016 11:05 AM

You mean if Ware doesn’t want to re-work his deal. Miller is not leaving the Broncos

  4. patsxsaintsfan says: Feb 22, 2016 11:05 AM

Personally I think he would retire but I have no idea how this guy is feeling he had been banged up all year but managed to look healthy his biggest 2 games of the year. If I’m the Broncos I’d probably rather keep Malik Jackson if it’s a reasonable price then Demarcus ware for another year or 2 at most

  5. intrafinesse says: Feb 22, 2016 11:11 AM

Ware has been missing games due to nagging injuries. If you put his “worth” at 12MM, and deduct for missed games, maybe 7MM is closer to the mark.
He’s won a super bowl, and maybe he should retire, so that he doesn’t have nagging pain later in life.

  6. kneedragr says: Feb 22, 2016 11:13 AM

He’s 34, made a lot of money, just won the SB with no real prospect to repeat in Denver. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him retire. If he plays, probably for a 1 year deal with a contender for 8-10M’ish.

  7. granadafan says: Feb 22, 2016 11:21 AM

As my old employer once told us during tough times. You can all take a 15% pay cut or a 100% pay cut.

No real prospect to repeat, how do you figure? If anything, the Broncos will be better next year than they are this year. Better at QB, Offensive line, and more..

Elway is one step ahead. That’s why the drafted Shane Ray. Ray will be a pro bowler next year, and at a much lower price tag than Ware.

  10. feckyerlife says: Feb 22, 2016 11:27 AM

Im not sure if Ray is ready to take over Wares roll.

  11. mjd08501 says: Feb 22, 2016 11:36 AM

I’d love for him to be Mario Williams’ replacement in Buffalo. He’s better, would be cheaper, and more importantly actually cares about football and winning, not just cashing a check.

  12. whiteybulgersson says: Feb 22, 2016 11:47 AM

He would much rather take a paycut with the great Bill Belichick.

    Four rings.

    Tom Brady.

Improved offensive line this year and defense.

    Super bowl win guaranteed.

  13. mongo3401 says: Feb 22, 2016 11:47 AM

Buffalo? No way, they have to cut Williams just to sign anyone as they are already over the cap. They cannot afford to sign the left side of their offensive line no less pay aware 7-8 mil a year.

  14. bluemoonfootball says: Feb 22, 2016 11:49 AM

Cowboy fan in Arlington. So proud of Ware’s success.

It seems so long ago that there was a debate as to who would be the greater pro, D Ware or Lights Out Merriman, I know it seems crazy, but it happened.

    BeWare of D Ware

  15. 6thsense10 says: Feb 22, 2016 12:00 PM

DeMarcus Ware has a signed contract with the Broncos. The Broncos are using their leverage to attempt to force a renegotiation of the contract to something more favorable to them. No problems. But when the shoe is on the other foot and it’s a star player attempting to use their leverage to renegotiate a contract more favorable to him there shouldn’t be any objections or complaints.

I figure because only a blind Bronco loving fool would think that Osweiler could ever win a Superbowl. Sorry but even though Manning’s skills declined, he managed those playoff games perfectly. Os would never have made it by the Pats. You guys might make it to the playoffs, a few times over the next half decade, but winning the SB again? NO WAY.

Considering that Ware wasn’t going for a pay cut with Dallas, I don’t see why he would take a pay cut to stay in Denver. Assuming he doesn’t retire, I’m sure he’ll have plenty of options.

  22. bigbenh8tr says: Feb 22, 2016 12:10 PM

Just come back to Dallas where you are going to eventually retire anyway.

You can take turns at DE with Gregory, D Lawrence to save your body – not that it will be needed in the post season.

Most importantly you can teach Gregory to walk the straight and narrow like you so kindly did for Von Miller.

The Seahawks saw it, and now the Broncos are seeing it.

you can hate the patriots all you want, but you see how hard it is to stay relevant for 16 years in today’s salary cap world?

No other team has been able to do it.

I seem to remember reading this same guarantee all year from Pats fans. How did that work out? Let us know how “the great Bill Belichick” likes that PARTICIPATION TROPHY. Will y’all have a ceremony and a parade to award it?

  25. patsfan4lifesbchamps says: Feb 22, 2016 12:26 PM

The Bronco’s defense was not as good when Dware was out. Denver needs 2 dominant edge rushers otherwise teams just double team Von Miller. That’s why Von Miller was successful when he played opposite Elvis Dummerville then opposite Dware. Shane Ray is not there yet. If they cut Dware expect a big drop in production for Von.

  26. justintuckrule says: Feb 22, 2016 12:41 PM

As a Giants fan, I was glad to see him go the AFC west. Hope he stays there.

  27. JaminJake says: Feb 22, 2016 12:54 PM

Ware need to come down to the 5 million dollar level if he wants to stay here. He has missed a couple games in both of his years here. With Shane Rae and Shaquille Barrett coming up, he CAN be let go.

With that said, I would like to have him back. He was an absolute monster in the SB. I just hope he can channel that hunger into the upcoming year.

You might want to see what Brock can do for an entire season before you start anointing him as a “better QB” than Peyton Manning…

  29. floratiotime says: Feb 22, 2016 1:13 PM

The Broncos went all in for a Superbowl … and did it !!! They’ll have issues now, but no one can take away that trophy.

  30. tjg342011 says: Feb 22, 2016 1:13 PM

I believe if Elway gives him the opportunity to take a pay cut he will take it just to remain with such a great team. he’s made all the money he needs. I don’t think he would take less then 6-6.5 mIL but that’s fair. If Any lower he will asked to be cut and I GARENTEE jerry Jones will do everything in his power to snatch him up. But hopefully they can work out a deal keeping him in denver we need his leadership, his couching influence on training up and coming OLB’s and offensive tackles he is a great dude and hope he gets to stay for another yr.

Umm the Seahawks went 10-6 last year. Plenty of teams would be pretty happy with that.

Oh, and the Patsies went 10-6 a few times under Brady/Belichick, but I’m sure you weren’t around in 2005. Or 2009 for that matter.

Salary cap space is not as important as winning the Super Bowl. What good is it if a team has tons of cap space but they did it by cutting the players that could get them to the Super Bowl and win it?

  42. ontboltfan says: Feb 22, 2016 7:31 PM

They have an embarassment of riches of pass rushers w Von Miller, Derek Wolfe, Melik Jackson and they just used their #1 last year on OLB Shane Ray.

Ray is on a rookie deal for $2-3M tops where Ware commands close to $10M so you do the math.

  43. jaro6771 says: Feb 23, 2016 2:03 AM

To the guy who said oz couldn’t get past the pats …. He led them from being down by 10 in the 4th against the cry babies … Obviously huge for the #1 seed and eventual super bowl run

  44. charless702 says: Feb 23, 2016 3:23 PM

D-Ware and Von Miller did more to win a Super Bowl than any other QB did this year so I’m not sure why you wouldn’t pay the both of them a QB type salary (together.) The Broncos just won a SB without a QB. Instead of paying $20M for 1 guy who, even if he has one of the greatest seasons of all time, can’t win a SB it makes more sense to pay 2 guys $25M while they terrorize opposing $20M dollar QB’s.

It doesn’t really matter to me though, I’m not a Broncos fan. I couldn’t care less if they got 6-10 next year with Von Miller and whatever clown they decide to roll with at QB and R-OLB.

  45. anduke76 says: Feb 25, 2016 12:41 AM

If i had my choice I would rather go with Malik+ (Ray+Barrett) VS. Ware + lose Malik to the Faiders. That is what this all boils down to imo. Keep in mind if we get 3/4 of a season from Ware I think its much for his aging body next year. (I still think your a beast no hard feelings *fist pump). I think we should look at the fact that we have two developing talents in Barrett and Ray and that they are not being used enough with Ware in orange. Developing Ray and Barrett and knowing we are getting them on the cheap for the next 2-3 year is music to my cap conscious ears. I think asking Ware to take a pay cut or slide over so we can sign (OUR HOME GROWN STUD) Malik Jackson is what I expect to happen.

    NEEDS TO HAPPEN
    BETTER HAPPEN

    WILL HAPPEN!
