Safety Malcolm Jenkins became the most recent member of the Eagles to sign a contract extension with the team on Monday and he pointed to another player that he’d like to see reach agreement on a new deal during a press conference announcing his pact.
Jenkins said that he hopes things work out so that he can continue sharing the secondary with Walter Thurmond, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent next month after playing out his one-year contract with the team. Thurmond moved to safety in 2015 and turned in a strong campaign next to Jenkins.
“His knowledge of the game and his production speaks for itself,” Jenkins said, via NJ.com. “He is a player that can make a lot of plays and made a lot of plays for us. ... His versatility freed me up a lot. Very versatile, similar to myself. He played corner his whole career and then his first year at safety was very, very productive.”
Thurmond’s versatility should be appealing on the open market and he said just after the end of the season that he didn’t expect the Eagles to be able to find the money needed to keep him in Philly for another year.
“They only have $17 million in cap space,” Thurmond said, via the Delaware County Times. “Economically it doesn’t make sense for them. I would love to be here. I love playing here. But that’s the way it is.”
With the need to sign a quarterback, Sam Bradford or otherwise, still among the to-do list in Philadelphia, Thurmond may wind up being proven correct.
