Eagles release DeMeco Ryans

The Eagles announced the release of veteran linebacker DeMeco Ryans Wednesday.

Ryans’ base salary of $2.5 million would have become fully guaranteed on Mar. 11. He restructured his contract before last season for cap reasons and got a $2 million signing bonus on his new deal that extended through 2016.

A second-round pick of the Texans in 2006, Ryans will be 32 this summer. He played the last four seasons with the Eagles and started 13 games last season.

His 2014 season was cut short by the second Achilles rupture of his career. A two-time Pro Bowler, Ryans has seven career interceptions and 13.5 career sacks in 140 games.

I know they get compensated in the form of
signing bonuses, but it irritates me to see a player reconstruct his deal, THAT THE TEAM OFFERED HIM and then he gets cut after saving them money.

I don’t think 2 mil a season is worth it to play mike line backer in the nfl at his age. Might be the end for Ryans

This is a move that you had to see coming. The one position that the Eagles are undeniably stacked at is linebacker, and Ryans is the old man of the bunch. Add in the fact that he’s coming off of a major injury and getting cut was a forgone conclusion.

He might have a bit left in the tank for a team that could use a veteran presence in the middle.

A real gentleman, leader, professional and brought the heart every time he played. Hope ‘Cap’ finds one more pay day.

Nothing to hate about a team being able to cut a player mid-contract or whatever. Everything that is done is done within the parameters of the agreement between the players and the league, known as the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

If the players don’t like it, they can discuss in the next negotiating go-round.

he was the quintessential guy you want in the locker room. great leader and great mentor. unfortunately injuries made him a salary cap casualty. i will stand by my belief that he was the best linebacker (4-3 style) that the Eagles have had since Bill Bergey. will miss him as a person and player but i understand the move. best of luck Mufasa

Will miss DeMeco Ryans. He was truly a playmaker for Philly. The stats don’t fully show the impact he had during his time in Philly.

Solid man and player but a risk at his age and injury history. Some comments are overly optimistic about current depth, but a business move and there is finally a D coordinator to trust…first time since loss of Jim Johnson.
