Packers say Jordy Nelson looks ready for OTAs

Jordy Nelson AP

Packers receiver Jordy Nelson is doing so well in his rehab from last year’s torn ACL that General Manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy have little doubt he’ll be on the field for Organized Team Activities.

“He’s around the building a lot of the time,” Thompson said. “I mean literally all the time. He’s a workout, rehab freak like you would imagine. That was a hard thing for him to do sitting out the season, but he looks great. You sometimes wonder if he was really hurt.”

McCarthy said his biggest concern with Nelson will be not overdoing it. McCarthy noted that the Packers play in the Hall of Fame Game this year, and that with a fifth preseason game there’s plenty of time to ease Nelson into things and get him ready for the regular season.

“He’s way ahead of schedule,” McCarthy said. “It’s a conversation I’ve already had with Jordy with this fifth preseason game and how we play him in the preseason. I think that’s a conversation you have with each and every veteran player who’s coming back from a major injury. There’s definitely a threshold and transition that those guys have to go through. I think in the OTAs, he’ll work there some, but I don’t see him by the time training camp comes around having any limitations.”

After a 2015 season in which the Packers’ offense stagnated, there’s reason for optimism in Green Bay that 2016 will see improvement, with the Packers’ No. 1 receiver back to full speed.

I almost feel bad for the rest of the NFL. This team is ridiculously LOADED.

Wonder if Karen Rodgers will have his excuses this year

He took away the Packers Offense when he went down.. No one else could step up.

  4. patsxsaintsfan says: Feb 25, 2016 7:22 PM

You take no chances and don’t let him play until the last 2 weeks of the pre season if he feels 100% even at 99% wait. Jordy Nelson makes that offense go the way Gronk does the patriots. He doesn’t always have to have a big game but the attention he draws makes it so others can have the stats he won’t. When Gronk and Nelson aren’t in the line up double team Cobb or eldeman and the offense will struggle.

If GB can somehow get a tight end who can break loose, watch out, everyone . . . .

Jordy is a beast. Hope he stays healthy. Good for the game.

I agree this team should be the NFCN runner up favorites again. Assuming Rodgers regains his accuracy and figures out he can throw it more than 5 yards I think they can at least be competitive for the division.

Everyone seems awfully sure that a 30 year old guy is going to automatically be the same player he was prior to a torn ACL.

I’m not saying he won’t, but I really don’t understand why everyone just assumes it’s an eventuality.

Jordy will be fine. Back to the 80/1200/10 line easy, and potentially more.

Further, the OL will be fine. Great starting 5. Cobb as a slot will be fine. And Adams/Janis/Abby/Monty is a great 3,4,5,6 combo. WR will be a strength next year.

And I’d bet Phat Ed shows up motivated to grab that 2nd contract. GB’s O is going to be fantastic next year. The only real concern is whether TT can grab a TE in Free Agency – cause none of the rooks are going to do it.

    Martellus. Bennett. DO IT TT.

What an awesome WR. Humble and extremely productive. Just think, the Vikings are paying Mike Wallace, yes that stiff….a million more per year than Jordy. Good lord.

Such encouragement from a second place WR!

Jordy truly is the Great White Hope

Jordy Nelson has more Super Bowl rings than all players who ever played for the Vikings in history won with the team.

Let that sink in for a moment.

If Aaron Rodgers wouldn’t have thrown that ball 10 feet too high, Jordy Nelson would have caught that ball and the GB Packers would have been super bowl champions again!

I’m glad Jordy is back. It makes the Packers more competitive. In the end it won’t matter. The Vikes take the NFCN easily in 2016. To all the Packer fans…you don’t know it yet but your team is on the decline. McCarthy will be fired in 2017. Thompson will be fired in 2018. The best part is that you’ll want this to happen. Rodgers will demand it. Meanwhile, there will be no future HOF QB to step in and right the ship after the purge. The Vikes faced this 2+ years ago and were able to get it turned around. I don’t see a Mike Zimmer in the Packers future.

Pretty amazing how quickly players recover from ACL injuries under modern medical practices. Vikings fans wish him well — and our collective intestinal constitution is just fine thank you.

==================================Aaron Rodgers is 5th all-time in yards per attempt and 8th all-time in yards per game. Probably didn’t happen from throwing short passes. Most intelligent football fans know his abilities.

There’s a soft-tossing young QB who in Minnesota who could learn a lot from him, and from a lot of other QB’s. The Vikings need better than a 14 TD quarterback who throws 8 of his TD’s against the Bears and the Lions.

packer fans thinking Jordy was the reason they failed last year are absurd. They continue to ignore the fact their ILB Fabio went two weeks without a tackle. And also jogged after Larry Fitz with the the season on the line. All for the price of $12.7 million a year.

yeah and trent dilfer has the same amount of rings as Rodgers. so whats your point?

  29. filthymcnasty3 says: Feb 26, 2016 9:51 AM

The Vikings are so incompetent that Trent Dilfer is more successful than any player in Viking history.

Even Johnny Manziel, JaMarcus Russel and Ryan Leaf each have as many rings as any player in Viking history.

The Vikings are easily the most incompetent franchise in the history of sports.

im as passionate a packer fan as there is, but getting jordy back is not the instant fix this team needs. it helps, oh it definetly helps. it the fix to get us back on top in the north. but while a division crown is the dreams of our sisters to the west, our sights need to be set higher. we also need a seam stretching tight end, a running back to shed some pounds so when he breaks away hes not looking back hoping someone tackles him because hes gassed. we also need a real middle linebacker so clay can play opposite Julius where he needs to be. we also need better back up offensive lineman that don’t wet themselves if they have to play left tackle. jordy is part of the fix, not all of it

  33. cheeseisfattening says: Feb 26, 2016 10:10 AM

The Eddie Lacy training style is commonplace in Green Bay so taking the stairs instead of using the elevator qualifies Nelson as a workout freak in McCarthy’s mind.

    ========================

I don’t know about that. That soft-tossing QB seemed to be good enough to help win the division last year.

Jordy being back on the field will obviously help the Packers in 14 out of 16 games next year. The 2 games against Minnesota, not so much.

Some of his lowest performance have been in games against MN. Next season it will get even worse.

More bad news for Vikings’ fans. The Packers have the softest schedule in the NFL in 2016 based on the W-L records in 2015.

Vikings help that by being forced by the NFL schedule makers to play GB twice again this coming season.

  42. glac1 says: Feb 26, 2016 12:01 PM

With Jordy back and if the others get healthy look out. The team still competed well in January with their number 4 and five receivers! Health and a bit of tight end help will take that team to the next level in a hurry…

Jordy Nelson is an excellent WR and all I am is drunk.

    Good for me.

  45. cheeseisfattening says: Feb 26, 2016 12:33 PM

Here are 5 more reasons Mike McCarthy thinks Jordy Nelson is a work out freak.

    1. He can see his feet when he looks down.
    2. He skips 2nd breakfast.
    3. He doesn’t have an opinion as to which pizza is better, thin crust or deep dish.
    4. He agrees with Cheryl Tiegs
    5. He has never tried poutine.

I really do hope the Vikings continue to improve, it makes for better football than the sorry product they’ve been putting out on the field for most of the past decade.

It really is a blessing to be a Packer fan. Competitive year after year, committed to draft and develop, prudent with the cap and having two of the best quarterbacks in the game for the past 24 years and counting. With Jordy back, our young receivers on the rise and our veterans getting healthy, we’ll add some depth at linebacker, a tight end and depth on both sides of the line of scrimmage – well all I can say is good luck to the Vikings in their quest to repeat as NFC North Champions.

I like our chances. Go Pack Go.

  49. packmanfan says: Feb 26, 2016 5:59 PM

    So what?
With McMuffin they will get to the playoffs only to lose yet again.
I’ve given up hope for this team.
It’s the only way I can protect myself from being too disappointed whenever they lose the big games.

  50. pixelzombie says: Feb 26, 2016 11:40 PM

We’ll see if Jordy can still do that spin move this year. That puts tremendous strain on your ligaments. For that matter Rodgers is also coming off surgery. Don’t expect an easy road into the playoffs.

  51. Rolo Tomassi says: Feb 27, 2016 5:40 AM

The “experts” like to mention that Rodgers is 0-7 in overtime but sure don’t want to mention that he didn’t get the ball in 5 of those games.
