The 49ers will add former NFL quarterback Kevin O’Connell to their offensive staff, FootballScoop.com reported Friday.

O’Connell served as the quarterbacks coach with the Browns last season, his first full-time NFL coaching job.

Chip Kelly previously hired Ryan Day as the 49ers quarterbacks coach. O’Connell’s exact role with the 49ers has not been announced, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported O’Connell is working for the 49ers this week at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The Browns hired O’Connell last February, but his official hiring was delayed because he wanted to fulfill his commitment to training Marcus Mariota as he prepared for the draft. O’Connell worked with Johnny Manziel before the 2014 draft and then coached him last season with the Browns.

O’Connell, 30, was a third-round pick of the Patriots in 2008 and spent time with four other teams during his five-year career as a backup quarterback.
