The Bills cleared some needed space under the cap on Thursday by restructuring tight end Charles Clay’s contract and General Manager Doug Whaley said the team would be talking to other players about their deals in the near future as they continue trying to carve out room to make moves that include re-signing tackle Cordy Glenn and guard Richie Incognito.

One of the players they plan to approach is cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Gilmore is set to make $11.082 million this year after the Bills picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract and his cap hit, which is the same number, would go down if they’re able to work out a new deal.

“Absolutely,” Whaley said to Sal Capaccio of WGR 550. “And that’s why [senior vice president of football operations Jim Overdorf] and his staff will be meeting with his representatives. Not only will they be meeting with the unrestricted and restricted [free agents], but other guys on the team that we might want to extend.”

Gilmore started the first 12 games of last season for the Bills before heading to injured reserve with a torn labrum in his shoulder. He had 36 tackles and three interceptions and gave the Bills one-half of a solid tandem at corner along with rookie Ronald Darby.
