Saints confident in Brees deal, more focused on improving defense

Drew Brees AP

Saints quarterback Drew Brees has a $19.75 million salary this season and a whopping $30 million cap hit, the biggest cap hit in the NFL. The Saints would like to get a new deal done to lower that cap hit and extend Brees beyond this season.

But will Brees play ball? He has a lot of leverage: He could simply tell the Saints that he’ll play out his contract and hit free agency a year from now.

The Saints, however, don’t think Brees is going to do that. Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis said last week that he’s confident Brees will agree to a new deal, and head coach Sean Payton reiterated that confidence in an interview with Mike Florio on Thursday at the Scouting Combine.

“I believe strongly that that will be taken care of here very, very soon, and uneventfully,” Payton said of Brees’ contract. “I know that there will be some type of extension worked out.”

Payton added that he’s more focused on improving the defense, noting that the Broncos showed that the way to win a Super Bowl is to get to the other team’s quarterback, and the Saints need to get better at that.

Payton is obviously right that the Saints need to improve their defense, which was a disaster last year. It’s going to be hard to improve that defense, however, without lowering Brees’ $30 million cap hit. That’s something the Saints want to get done soon.

Brees figures on retiring in N.O. so they may as well just rig up a signing bonus and spread his cap hit over 10 years.

  2. lengai says: Feb 26, 2016 6:42 AM

Brees has no leverage other than retirement. If he refuses he would get tagged. He’s retiring a Saint. There is no smoke but everyone’s acting like there’s a fire.

Saints fans no worrys here Brees don’t want to go nowhere.. He loves playing for Payton this new contract will get done soon.. trust me brees don’t want to leave and learn a new system and be on a new team he loves it in N.O. plus he is coming to the end of his career so yes he will trim the contract down in the saints favor…

The Saints could cut him too. He’s old. He didn’t have a great year. I don’t think he’s an elite QB. Rodgers had a bad year but he’s younger and he was injured.

  5. irishgary says: Feb 26, 2016 7:23 AM

Bree’s is such an arrogant ass it wouldn’t surprise me if he strung this out

  6. lingsun54 says: Feb 26, 2016 7:24 AM

And if you’re Brees why would you want to play the end of your career for a crappy aging team in salary cap hell?

  7. huh6016 says: Feb 26, 2016 7:56 AM

Brees knows that Payton will put a “hit” out for him if he doesn’t restructure. Of course Payton will know nothing about it…..

Brees’ 5yr, $100M, 2011 contract was record-breaking and utterly ridiculous. Compare it to Brady’s 3yr, $27M one. Is Brees worth paying more than double that of Brady? No, and it screwed any realistic chance of financing a regularly above-500 team (33-33, inc 2 playoff games, in last 4 yrs), let alone a perennial Super Bowl contender.

  10. sb44champs says: Feb 26, 2016 8:40 AM

Brees is a Top 5 QB of ALL TIME and SB44MVP. He deserves anything and everything he gets from the Saints and will restructure a deal that’s good for him as well as the team. YES!!!!

In this case, Fisher is correct lol

The reason for the .500 record the last 2 years is because we traded or released proven, productive and cheap players for nonproductive, more expensive, hurt players. Saints traded a healthy Sproles and picked up a hurt Spiller that cost more than Sproles. Saints released a productive Malcom Jenkins and picked up a hurt, more expensive Jairus Byrd. Also, Saints gave a MASSIVE contract to Jr Galette only to release him months later while eating a TON of dead money. If Saints didn’t make so many personnel mistakes obviously they could’ve fielded a playoff team even with Brees’ contract as they actually spent a heck of a lot of money trying to upgrade the roster. Massive, multiple personnel mistakes doomed the Saints, Brees’ contract not so much…

Led the league in passing and the Number 2 offense in the entire NFL. Easily a Top 5 QB. Haters gonna hate…..

we can get better on defense.

the way it gets written about, it sounds lkike were some hopeless d2 team, but if you watch the games, you see we do have some things on defense going for us.

if we just get a little more heat on the d line, and a healthy and good form Keenan lewis well be a lot better.

  16. floratiotime says: Feb 26, 2016 9:58 AM

Drew is all about the money. He may restructure, but he’s not taking a dollar less.

  17. robf2010 says: Feb 26, 2016 10:06 AM

“Brees has no leverage other than retirement. If he refuses he would get tagged.”

He’s been tagged twice in his career already. It would be extremely expensive to tag him a third time. He wants to stay and he wants to do so at or around the going rate for elite QBs. He’s a top ten QB and the salary cap went up. He’ll get what he wants.

    From NFL.com

    32 TDS, 11 INT, 4870 YDS, 101.0 RTG

And he missed a game. The bar is so much higher for him than others. Brees is in the conversation with any elite QB, past or present. The aren’t even dreaming of cutting him.

But, but, SuperBowl 44! how coe everyone on this board knows about that game?

As A falcon Fan I love this. Not only has Brees ruined the team financially, his skills as QB have deteriorated to the point where now hes just throwing up ducks to brake some obscure record. The Saints can just bite the bullet and just be terrible for the next five years or they can settle on just OK for a couple years then terrible for another 5. Drew Mees has the ego and greediness to just look out for himself and I love it. The funniest thing is saints fans bringing up SB 44 from a decade ago, even Buc fans aren’t that pathetic. Yeah guys, you won a superbowl a decade ago, pull out your VCRs and rewatch the moment…those of us in the real world live in the now..and we like teams with a chance of winning

  23. saints12013 says: Feb 26, 2016 11:27 AM

I love when people make Bounty Gate jokes. It is really funny.

Those comments are most likely coming from people that’s favorite team has empty trophy cases.

Bounty Gate or NOT, we beat 3 Hall of Fame QB’S to win that Super Bowl.

This is an uninformed statement. He is under contract for another year, so no need to tag anyone. Plus, he’s already been tagged twice.

This is going to play out very quickly and quietly. The extension will happen, and he might take a little less.

  26. saints12013 says: Feb 26, 2016 11:35 AM

    @steviaquinn

And even with an old guy like Brees, we still sweep the Falcons every year.

A decade is 10 years in case you didn’t know so unless it’s 2019 it’s still nowhere near 10 years yet.

Falcons = ZERO Super Bowl Wins…….

I don’t think the Saints are going to win the SB this year, or next year for that matter.

Ride out this one last year, and give the fans something to cheer about.

Draft a QB later round to be groomed this year.

Next clear the books and start over.

His numbers were very good last year, but with his age will probably start to drop off and injuries will begin. You don’t want to saddle yourself with huge cap hits for mediocre QB a few years from now when the team is reloaded.

  30. granadafan says: Feb 26, 2016 12:02 PM

The Saints tell Brees: “Sure you can make us take the $30 million cap hit, but we have to cut all your linemen and sign undrafted rookies”. Hope you can run fast.

NFCE guy so no dog in the fight but contrasting Ryan’s and Brees’ contracts is educational. They are very similar, guaranteed value has Ryan $2M higher, with the exception of the back loading of the final year in Brees’ case meaning Brees bet on himself to gain leverage in a contract year neither he or the team ever envisioned him playing under. From a performance standpoint Brees has given N.O. a lot more bang for the buck. Given what each has proven on the field Falcons fans are in no position to throw shade at Brees for being a ‘me’ guy.

  36. lapantherfan86 says: Feb 29, 2016 5:15 PM

The Panthers have only been a team for 21 years. It took the Aints more than double that time to win their SB.

I’m fine with you trashy simpletons living in the past, just continue to stay the f out of Carolina’s way, like you’ve been doing so well recently.
