Dolphins sleeping on Vernon tag one more night

The window for applying the franchise or transition tag opened 13 days ago. It closes Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET. The Dolphins haven’t officially decided whether to tag defensive end Olivier Vernon.

Per a league source, the Dolphins plan to sleep on it one more night, taking full advantage of the tag deadline. Which makes sense, since it’s a deadline-driven business.

Vernon would make $15.701 million under the franchise tag, and $12.734 million under the transition tag. The Dolphins would be entitled to compensation in the form of two first-round picks only if the franchise tag is applied; under the transition tag, they’d receive a right to match an offer sheet signed by Vernon elsewhere.

It’s been suggested that Vernon could be tagged and traded, a phenomenon that hasn’t been used much in recent years. Not only would the new team have to give Vernon a significant long-term deal, but it also would have to give the Dolphins sufficient compensation to persuade them to part ways with him.

In 2009, the Patriots traded franchise-tagged quarterback Matt Cassel to the Chiefs. A year earlier, the Vikings acquired franchise-tagged defensive end Jared Allen from Kansas City. No franchise-tagged players have been traded since then.

A third-round pick from the University of Miami in 2012, Vernon has played in all 64 career games with the Dolphins. He racked up 11.5 sacks in 2013, and 7.5 in his contract year.

Regardless, he’s one of the best available free-agent pass rushers in 2016, which means that if he hits the open market someone with plenty of cash and cap space will likely make a big push for him in the early, drunken-sailor-spending days of the signing period. Whether he’ll get a shot at the open market will become more clear by Tuesday afternoon.

  1. Just Tag him already then you can always work out a long term deal. God forbid if the Miami Dolphins sign their own free agents. Ross can afford the 15 million he makes that in interest in 1 hour

  2. The union frowns on tag and trade deals since they want teams to let players they don’t plan to keep enter an open market. So the last CBA added a term giving the union an independent right to veto trades of tagged players, even if the player doesn’t mind.

  3. Was wondering why the story of his tag/trade never got picked up here.

I heard today that his agent has said the team will be given the opportunity to match should he not get tagged.

    Dolphins sleeping. Very appropriate headline.

Very ironic statement considering the last time the Pats played the Dolphins…

  6. Good move. Need sleep. Although they get plenty of sleep once December comes to an end. It’s been 15 years since I’ve felt like phin fans do. You have my sympathy. Extend Tannehill, please.

Dolphins, sleeping with the fishes. Like their dreams of a playoff win have for the last 15 years or their SB hopes for the last 40+

If any fan knows the pain dolphin fans are going through right now its patriot fans. Lets just hope the dolphins last 15 years of being average isn’t like the patriots first 30 cheating being irrelevant.

  8. I hope they don’t tag him unless they have a sure fire trade partner. I would rather take the chance on Wake returning to form next year then paying Vernon 15.7 million. If he walks in free agency then they will more then likely get a 3rd round comp pick in 2017 anyway.

  9. Don’t mess with that Transition Tag again. Remember what happened to Charles Clay who has already restructured that deal he got.

  10. Let him walk!! He cost the Fins 2 games last year… and his production is not as equal as Wake’s…. not worth all that money… Sorry.
Love him, but I’d rater sign more players with that money.. we have a lot of needs.

The Jets also contributed. I posted about an AFCE alliance half jokingly last off season. It paid off.

Yep, they looked great playing each other in the AFCCG, I mean Divisional…er WC…um never mind. But yeah, you did it! The Pats only went 4-2 in the division..the same as they did the year before that and the year before that, when they also went at least as far as the conference championship.

All kidding aside the AFCE is not the cakewalk fan bases outside of it would have everyone believe. In fact even when the Pats record is removed it is the 3rd winningest division in the league for the last 15 years. Of course in those years the Jets have actually been to a championship game unlike the Dolphins who have had not had a whiff of one in the cap era when a team has to be built not bought.

  12. He is not worth 15 million a yr, or 12 million for that matter….offer him a 8-10 million a yr for 5 yrs, if he doesn’t sign, the draft is loaded with DL… can’t have Suh getting 100 million and this average DE making 85 million……

  13. Transition him, no one will make a offer to him.

I wouldn’t mind keeping him for 8 10 mill, cutting wake and take lawson.. our line would be pretty nice ..

    That’s my dram pick..

But we need to go lb with ragland or cb with ramsey or hargraves

  14. OV is 25 in the prime of his career you think it’s easy to find pass rushers ? who’s replacing him ??? Wake is coming off a serious injury and is 34, Shelby or some draft pick LOL. His head coach was Joe Philbin enough said. OV will go to another team and be an ALL PRO and he will get paid. We let Vontae Davis now we are looking for a corner how bout that Middle Linebacker we let go Karlos Dansby Elerby was a great replacement lol . looking for a guard John Jerry ring a bell the list goes on and on. Pass rushers and shut down corners is what you need to win in the NFL see the Denver Broncos

  15. He should have been extended before last season. Then we wouldn’t be going through this. Could have had him at 8M a season if they would have planned ahead.

  16. The Phins have been asleep for the past 10 years. Wake up already and sign this beast.

  17. Yeah you can get 2 or 3 other players for the higher cost he will demand. Those players would be mediocre at best. We have seen that before. Those types won’t be busting up plays setting up the blueprint to stop higher tier QB’s.

This guy has worked for peanuts his whole time here. (check OTC ) There should be no/little hometown discount.
Work out a contract. There will be money freed up with other players/positions. TE as an example and bring up Stoneburner.
