Patriots, Tom Brady agree to two-year extension through 2019

Robert Kraft, Tom Brady AP

Tom Brady is under contract with the Patriots until he’s 42 years old.

Brady and the Patriots have agreed on a two-year contract extension that locks him up through the 2019 season, Adam Schefter and Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN report. Brady is 38 now and will turn 42 in August of 2019.

There’s no immediate word on the financial terms of the deal. Brady is currently scheduled to cost $15 million against the Patriots’ 2016 cap and $16 million against the Patriots’ 2017 cap. When veterans agree to contract extensions, it often lowers the cap hit in the first year and pushes more money down the road.

Although Brady is getting on in years, he’s still playing well and has said he wants to play into his 40s. It’s not often that a 38-year-old has four more years on his contract, but there aren’t many pairings like Brady and the Patriots.

Last year was arguably his best year statistically even though the O line was suspect and the WRs were a mess. Amazing what a righteous cause can do to one’s production.

  7. chesswhileyouplaycheckers says: Feb 29, 2016 10:15 AM

This should remove any doubt about him finishing his career anywhere else. How many other great players have consistently put winning ahead of cash the way Brady has? Comparing different eras is an exercise in futility but he is hands down the greatest of the salary cap era.

And now back to the usual trolls throwing shade in 5, 4, 3…

  8. flaccodelic says: Feb 29, 2016 10:15 AM

So many new opportunities to cheat, so little time…

  9. yourmadre says: Feb 29, 2016 10:15 AM

It’s amazing how well he still moves around and throws the ball for someone his age. He’s almost as old as Manning and has probably taken many more hits, but you would never know that by watching them.

  10. atthemurph says: Feb 29, 2016 10:15 AM

When Brady leaves so does the head coach/GM. The person left to pick up the pieces isn’t going to like the state of the franchise.

I’m inclined to expect a decline in his play, Father Time waits for no man.

Brady! Brady! Brady! No QB I’d rather have in the NFL best leader, QB, gives his team a better attitude and always makes them believe he can win. 4 super bowl rings 3 super bowl MVPS and every playoff record a QB can have (other than most play off losses sorry manning fans) if he isn’t your greatest of all time just let the greatness wash over your hate.

  13. clelek05 says: Feb 29, 2016 10:17 AM

Can’t think of any better news than this. Please give Brady the weapon(s) he deserves. Edelman needs to go back to being a #2 type slot receiver. Let’s get a true #1. I’m looking at you Megatron!

But that means Belichick is around till 2019 too.

  17. rogerdw66 says: Feb 29, 2016 10:19 AM

Brady’s record over his last 8 games, 3-5, a little worse than mediocre.

  18. tylawspick6 says: Feb 29, 2016 10:20 AM

Deal Garropolo to the Cowboys for a 2nd rd pick.

Thanks Brady. I am assuming this now lines up some extra cap space in the next 2 years to get Forte in there, with JOsh Gordon on a trade and to extend Hightower, Collins and Butler.

  19. chuckshontaspads says: Feb 29, 2016 10:20 AM

Helps the defense big time. Now sign Collins, Hightower and Butler to extensions.

  20. djaehne says: Feb 29, 2016 10:25 AM

Hard to imagine Brady not being the QB of the Patriots.

  21. rhamrhoddy says: Feb 29, 2016 10:25 AM

This dude ain’t just sticking around for one for the thumb. He’s gonna put every ounce of physical, mental and emotional energy into these next 4 years to win as much as possible.

This guy turns a southwest wind into the slight of the century so you know the whole Deflategate railroading is gonna put his determination to win to yet another level.

The league is gonna try and cheat him a fair chance to compete and win while at the same time try to make him look like it was HIS fault that he was cheated? Dudeman is borderline crazy and I can’t see him retiring now with less than 5 rings.

  22. whatjusthapped says: Feb 29, 2016 10:27 AM

I could see why he would want to stay, no other franchise has taken a more systematic approach to cheating and no other Qb has benefited more from that cheating so its a marriage made in…. 26. tylawspick6 says: Feb 29, 2016 10:29 AM

As a Pats fan, this is great news, but Brady really needs to be better in the postseason. He’s entering into a stage where he needs to rely a bit more on some play under Center with a run game.

    Welcome, Matt Forte.

  29. JaminJake says: Feb 29, 2016 10:33 AM

The real problem is he can’t go down the field with the accuracy he had in his youth, and that’s to be expected. They need to be a team with a RB and receivers who can get YAC (edleman) or 99 spectacular catch (Gronk)

Their offense let up a gear after losing their receiving RB Lewis and again after losing Edleman.

  30. jojovie131 says: Feb 29, 2016 10:33 AM

Gee I wonder why Brady’s record was 3-5 last 8 games like that idiot above said? Oh could it be bc the patriots had 21 players on IR the most of any team in last five years.? Could that be a reason you fool?
Also, when patriots were healthy they were 10-0 and averaged 37.5 points per game. So put that in your pipe and smoke it?

Understand the sentiment. I’m a Giants guy married to a Pats gal, there is no end of back and forth snark between us when it comes to our teams. I have nothing but props for Brady though. He is among the best to ever play the game and has always put winning first.

Tom may be 38 but he has the body of a 28 year old. He eats no refined sugar (and hasn’t for years) and optimizes his nutrition in every meal. He has learned how to look after himself.
The greatest QB of all time is also the smartest and most unselfish, (he is paid $4M less per year than Ryan Tannehill).
Tom Brady embraces the team concept. He is a true Patriot.

I am really curious to see if Belichick can still be an elite coach without Brady. I have always thought NEs success was due to both but more so Brady than Belichick. Most of the years they didnt represent the AFC was Belichicks shortcomings not Bradys. Although both have bailed each other out, I think BB had cost Tom more given some questionable coaching and personnel moves. Of course he is the GM and HC and Tom is just a player so he does deserve more heat.

    Of course, *

I love when people bring this up. If you had any clue about football you would realize it’s not a “dink and dunk” offense, it’s short timing passes. “Dunking and dunking” is when the QB just dumps off to the RB coming out of the backfield cause all his other options have been taken away. Alex Smith is THE perfect example of this. Every QB can dink and dunk but not all of them can consistently move the ball with short passes cause they don’t have the accuracy. Besides if it was so easy why can’t defenses stop them from doing it and why don’t other quarterbacks do it. If it’s as easy as you make it sound every QB should be able to run the same system. The truth is that they can’t. That should tell you everything you need to know.

    Exactly.

    Did Montana “dink and dunk”?

People have no idea what they’re talking about when it comes to the concepts of football on these boards.

Pats run a makeshift/hybrid West Coast offense, where the whole thing is based on quick, timed passes, for the most part.

Montana made a career out of it.

Haters denounce Brady as not being able to throw far, then say his record isn’t as good as Montana because it’s a passing game today! Which is it haters? – you can’t have it both ways. As to the cheating, you obviously haven’t been paying attention for the past year or else better phone Park Ave and tell their lawyer something he couldn’t tell the judge last year. Or are you referring to a disagreement over camera placement changes for one game at the start of 2007 season? LOL! Compare that to Rice’s stikum and Bill Walsh’s headsetgate.

Drew Brees passed for 4870 yards, of those yards 2406 are YAC yards and 2464 are AIR YARDS (total yards ball traveled in the air)

Tom Brady passed for 4770 yards. Of those yards 2399 are YAC yards and 2371 are AIR YARDS

    very similar numbers

This is how you DO NOT CHEAT THE CAP LIKE DENVER HAS BEEN DOING.

An extension like this gives them some extra cap space. Probably not a ton, but still, it will help sign FOrte.

Elway just runs around like a chicken with his head cut off signing every top tier FA available at their weak spots, just like Denver did in 1995, 1996 and 1997 when they cheated the cap like they do now.

Why should we wait for an audit to find out Denver has been cheating? Any update on the idea Denver was tapped into Gomer’s Guyer connection for Chinese steroids?

    Maybe he doesn’t fling it 70 yards anymore b/c oh I don’t know….he’s a 38 year old QB?

Even WITH the deflate gate junk he still had one of his best statistical seasons ever.

Brady’s a stud and the Jets, Dolphins, and Bills won’t win the AFC east until he retires.

Sort of conflicted on Tom Brady. On one hand, he’s been demolishing my poor beleaguered Bills for so many years now that it’s just pathetic, and it sounds like there are at least 1-3 more years of the Bills automatically starting every season 0-2 and with a wild card slot being our only chance at the playoffs.

On the other hand, he’s absolutely a top-10, probably top-5, QB of all time, so it’s just plain fun to watch him play. Watching him finally retire in a couple of years will be a weird feeling.

Nobody has it worse than the NFC North though. Dear god. Going from Favre straight into Rodgers… Absolutely loved watching Favre and Rodgers is currently my favorite player to watch in the NFL, but my heart goes out to Vikings, Bears, and Lions fans. Here’s to hoping the Patriots don’t fall face first into another HOF QB after Brady retires like the Packers did…

Brady’s been accused and yet there still remains no evidence of cheating.

People know that. But you seem to have “forgotten”.

Here’s a question for you and other accusers: exactly how did Brady cheat? And what evidence supports your accusation?

And your answer needs to be something better than “it’s in the Wells report” (it isn’t) or “the NFL wouldn’t have punished him” (oh, really?) or “what about the text messages?’ (what about them? it’s your argument, not mine)

If you answer my question with a question, you haven’t answered anything.

    ——————–

It’s never hard to spot the posers, lol. It was Polian/Manning leading the charge to put skirts on QB’s and bubbles around receivers. The Pats won 3 SB’s in 4 years as a primarily defensive/ball control team and the rules changes were designed to defeat that. It worked too, they went 10 years between championships and the little ponies got their ring. The Pats got hosed by those changes and had to rework both their roster and philosophy.

    Bleacher Report – November, 2010

Polian is on the NFL’s competition committee and as such is in a position to help change the league’s rules. Is it a coincidence that the NFL started changing rules left and right to favor offense in the last decade, approximately the same time that the Colts got their hands on franchise quarterback Peyton Manning?

When facing the Patriots in the playoffs in 2003, Manning suffered a brutal defeat. New England played a physical game and outmuscled the Colts. They beat up on Manning’s receivers and made them pay for every catch. But they didn’t break any rules.

What did the Colts do? They complained vehemently about the Patriots’ physical play, and their President Bill Polian helped institute a new rule—illegal contact.

I am really curious to see if Belichick can still be an elite coach without Brady.

Sure he can. Coached the team to 11 wins with Cassel in 2008🙂

And even more impressively…. took a talent-void franchise in Cleveland and put them on the cusp of a Super Bowl contender before Art Modell pulled the plug on the franchise.

    ————-

That point is so over done with regards to Cassel. That Patriots team was the same one that went 16-0 with Brady. 5 more wins for Brady. 5!!

Also, they didn’t win the division or make the playoffs despite the 11-5 record.

He went 13-5 last year. It’s fine if you want to highlight that 5 losses came in the last 8 games. Painting that as worse than mediocre within a 13-5 season seems a bit ….. disingenuous. Forget the fact that 2 of those 5 losses came in OT.

LOL at throwing 40 yards with accuracy. Out of 5-600 pass attempts you’d be extremely lucky to see 2 dozen 40+ pass attempts. What’s that 4-5% accounting for 40+ pass attempts. That’s BEFORE factoring in how many were actually completed.

Quite simply, who cares if a QB can throw 40 yards with accuracy. I’d much rather have high accuracy on the other 95% of the passes. Anybody who suggests otherwise is too busy watching ESPN highlights.

    This reminds me:

Do people realize to this day there’s still those who cite a retracted report of filming walk throughs as fact? (Now if you want to look back to the Bears and Chiefs in the 1950s there’s an admission they did that, but not the Patriots)

Or fans who have convinced themselves that Spygate’s scandal was filming signals period – not simply filming signals from a location that was legal the year before (See if they can explain how a violation of a 2006 rule invalidates Super Bowls from 01-04)

Now fans who refuse to believe that the Cold lowers PSI have them whipped into a frenzy of new cheating allegations

Gotta wonder how B&B will get into their heads next!
