Report: Danny Trevathan “high on Falcons’ radar”

While talking to the media before Super Bowl 50, Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan discussed his impending free agency and said he expected to talk to the Bears once he was able to open up discussions with other teams.

The Bears are coached by John Fox, who knows Trevathan well from their days together with the Broncos. That’s not the only team with a former member of the Broncos staff that may come calling for the linebacker, however.

Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports that Trevathan is “high on the Falcons’ radar” heading into free agency. The Falcons’ defensive coordinator Richard Smith was previously the Broncos’ linebackers coach. Atlanta has an opening in the linebacker corps after releasing Justin Durant earlier this month and a need for more playmakers on defense even when Durant was still on the roster.

As it always is with free agents, money will be a factor in where Trevathan winds up and that could be the rub for Atlanta. McClure believes the Falcons would like to pay between $5-6 million to add a linebacker, which might not be enough to land Trevathan off a strong season with the Broncos.

Da Bears are gonna back up the Brinks truck to get this guy. There is no greater position of need on their defense than an impact player at LB and nobody worthy of the 11th overall pick is likely to be there for them in the draft. They’ll add Trevathan, shore up the other LB position with a mid-tier FA and/or mid-round draft pick, spend their 1st rounder on a beast D-Lineman (Buckner or Robinson) and start getting Vic Fangio the players he needs to do work.

Whoever gets him gets an underrated player. Sad to see him leave Denver.

Given how bad the free agent and draft groups are for ILB, Trevathan couldn’t have picked a better year to be a free agent. If Denver isn’t careful on what level they tender Brandon Marshall as an RFA, he could be at risk too.

The Bears have to be preparing to go after this guy heavily. There isn’t really a plan B for that position.

Really hoping the Giants make at run at him. LB has been a position of weakness for far too long.

    Pay that man his money.

We got the most rings in the last 9 years, a pro bowl franchise QB, the #1 market in the country and $60M in cap space. Top those selling points.

I have to agree with Bassplucker on this one. The Bears are in need players at every level of their defense. Trevathan could be a great addition. Leaving the Bears to go with the best overall player available and maybe look at Jaylon Smith in a later round. Go Bears.

So, do you shoot, snort, smoke, or pop “Falcons’ Radar”, and will he lose playing time for it?

Played huge in the SB with 2 fumble recoveries. He deserves to be paid.

The best deal on the FA market at MLB if you ask me…

I believe Adam Gase is very familiar with him as well, and the Dolphins are also in need of a LB upgrade. I believe they will go LB in free agency, tag and trade Vernon, then draft DE/edge with #8. Primarily because of the cap difference.

Trevathan was a 6th round pick the Broncos received from the Jets for Tim Tebow. What a pick, what a trade.
