Marvin Harrison on Terrell Owens’ complaining: “The hell with him”

marvinharrison Getty Images

In the days following this year’s Hall of Fame voting, wide receiver Terrell Owens did plenty of complaining about the fact he didn’t make it.

But in a startlingly frank statement from a guy who is normally so quiet, one of the guys who made it this year told him to put a sock in it.

During an interview with the Talk of Fame Network, former Colts wideout Marvin Harrison had a harsh rebuke of Owens’ gripes, saying he wasn’t concerned about the possibility he’d split receiver votes and cause a logjam like the one that held up Cris Carter, Tim Brown and Andre Reed’s induction.

“I wasn’t concerned at all,’’ Harrison told hosts Ron Borges, Rick Gosselin and Clark Judge. “I’m not concerned about, you know, T.O. Not one bit. I was concerned about myself. I wasn’t worried about splitting the vote with anyone. That was it.

The person who was supposed to get in got in. And that was me. If he didn’t get in, that’s his problem. He can talk all that other bulls— like he’s been doing. That’s on him. But I’m in. My jacket is gold. I will look in the rear view for nobody.

“So he can get his ass in whenever he gets in, . . . if he gets in. If he doesn’t get in too bad. The hell with him.”

Wow Marvin, tell us how you really feel about T.O.

Harrison doesn’t have to apologize for his entry, as he was third all-time with 1,102 receptions, seventh in yardage (14,580) and fifth in touchdowns (128). Owens is sixth on the all-time reception list (1,078), second in yards (15,934) and third touchdowns (153).

And while Owens certainly has Hall of Fame credentials, his history of divisiveness was certainly a factor, and might have kept him from being a slam dunk. While former Colts coach and fellow Hall of Famer Tony Dungy is certainly biased, Dungy said he’d prefer Harrison over Owens “every day of the week.”

Marvin is one of the most overrated players of all time. Incredibly soft, and benefited from playing virtually his whole career with the most prolific QB of all time.

People also assumed because he was quiet that he was a selfless good guy, and as we all know now that wasn’t the case at all.

  10. greg3117 says: Mar 3, 2016 10:07 AM

    Awesome statement of fact!

  11. brianc34 says: Mar 3, 2016 10:07 AM

But the numbers don’t lie. He beat Harrison 2 out of 3 of those stats and the one he didn’t win was by 24 receptions. That’s maybe 3 games worth? Harrison’s yardage differential was a full season if not more behind TO. As was the TD difference. Seems to me if you are using those 3 stats, TO should have been in YEARS before Harrison.

  12. fedegene says: Mar 3, 2016 10:07 AM

I never really liked TO’s antics. To his credit, he never played with hall of fame QBs. Marvin Harrison was a great receiver, but he played with someone who did make things a lot easier for him. I personally think there are quite a few receivers who are better than Harrison but their numbers will never reflect that for having played their whole career with bad QBs on bad teams (Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson are the first ones who come to my mind).

  13. irkjames says: Mar 3, 2016 10:08 AM

  16. jm91rs says: Mar 3, 2016 10:09 AM

TO was a locker room cancer and Marvin was apparently a closet gangster who somehow got away with having a broad daylight shootout a few years ago. I’d take the me first guy over the guy that’s shooting guns at people.

  19. sb44champs says: Mar 3, 2016 10:11 AM

T.O. has better stats than Harrison with a larger YPC average (more Yds/TDs on less receptions) and he didn’t end someone’s life as Harrison allegedly did… Just saying. Without that mouth, I would take T.O. every day of the week over Harrison…

  20. All-American Voltron says: Mar 3, 2016 10:12 AM

At least Marvin didn’t shoot Owens. Seems like articles on him always make the implication that his being quiet equals him being a good guy. But ask me to pick between him and Owens and it’d be pretty much a dead heat. If anything, I’m fairly confident I already know everything bad about Owens. That’s not so clear about the quiet one.

I pay no attention to it and I never could really understand why so many people care. Isn’t it kinda sad watching ex players care so much about it? 38. thenoshows says: Mar 3, 2016 10:30 AM

What is tuff to manage is that Sterling Sharpe was better than Harrison but one guy has 1000 receptions and played half his games indoors without the elements. It is tough to separate elite talent because numbers are just numbers. I watched Cris Carter play twice a year for a long time and never once was he the biggest threat on the field in my option. But I believe he is in.

  39. corporatemediaprostitute says: Mar 3, 2016 10:34 AM

  42. kayler2425 says: Mar 3, 2016 10:35 AM

Y’all kill me Harrison played 2 yrs less than Owens it was smart he didn’t get hit and as of the shooting he was found to not be involved and the dude got shot by someone else and killed 2 yrs later so we can out that in him there was a time frame where 6 yrs in a row Harrison averaged 103 receptions so it’s a no brainier

  43. katientony says: Mar 3, 2016 10:38 AM

On one hand, I agree with Harrison. TO is such a bitch. And a complainer and he is ridiculous. So I am inclined to agree with Harrison’s summary: The hell with him.

But…on the other hand; I dont think that the HOF should be a popularity contest and the fact that TO is such a bitch should not matter. His numbers prove he should be in and next time around…he should be in.

Maybe then he’ll stop complaining? No…no he wont.

  44. jakeplummersghost says: Mar 3, 2016 10:40 AM

Harrison’s yardage differential was a full season if not more behind TO. As was the TD difference. Seems to me if you are using those 3 stats, TO should have been in YEARS before Harrison.
    ————–

You realize that TO played two more seasons than Harrison, right? So that explains why Harrison is “about one season’s worth of yardage and tds behind TO”.

Harrison has the single season receptions record with 143, smashing Herman moore’s record by 20. The most receptions TO had in a season? 100 on the dot. And it was the same year for both of them, 2002.

Harrison also retired a few years before TO, so no Terrell should not have been in “years before Marvin”.

It’s easy to look at numbers and say one is larger than the other….if you don’t consider sample size.

  45. silverhornet says: Mar 3, 2016 10:42 AM

I don’t remember Terrell Owens ever winning a Super Bowl. And there is a damn good chance TO won’t get in next year either. TO’s great stats don’t tell his complete story, and anyone that knows anything about football will tell you that.

Remember the playoff game where Peyton threw more receptions to Ty Law than Harrison? The Pats corners beat up Harrison all game prompting Polian to whine and complain to change the rules. 52. patriotsticketssince1978 says: Mar 3, 2016 10:52 AM

Owens played in the SB against the Patriots with significant injury and threat of permanent injury. He played his ass off. Harrison never had that type of signature moment that stuck with me. Both were great but I think Owens was the better player. He will get into the HOF and should enjoy the ceremony as long as Harrison doesn’t shoot him first.

  56. isphet71 says: Mar 3, 2016 11:00 AM

T.O.’s problem is that the Hall of Fame isn’t the Hall of Stats. It’s more the Hall of Popularity, and stats are just kind of a supportive role in the process.

T.O. did a lot of things to make him unpopular with the “electoral college” for the Hall of Fame. There are WRs with way worse stats than T.O. in the Hall, but those guys were likeable. Voters looked for reasons to get those guys IN, instead of finding excuses to keep T.O. OUT.

  57. ebdug says: Mar 3, 2016 11:01 AM

Dissing the Star on National TV did it. The logo stood for Meredith and Landry and Garrison more than any location. It was much more impactful to HOF voters than some random street crime like, say, murder. T.O. may have to wait until after Darren Sharper gets in.

The difference was that Harrison was nice to reporters and TO was not. This was the journalists’ chance to “get back” at TO or any other player who gives reporters a hard time. Watch what happens to Marshawn Lynch when he’s eligible. The voters will never let him in because he didn’t play ball.

Cliff Branch should get in the HOF before either of them.

  102. gmfw7 says: Mar 3, 2016 1:40 PM

it’s amazing that owens didn’t get in, because of people’s opinion of his attitude throughout his career, but no one seems to care that harrison’s career ended with a murder investigation. bottom line TO was the better player, and can you imagine if TO had gotten to play his entire career with peyton manning like marvin harrison did? TO would most likely be number 1 in receptions, yards, and maybe even TDs despite the fact Rice played 5 more seasons than he did

The one thing you can say about Harrison is “He didn’t vote”. So it’s not on him that he was selected..

  104. joker65 says: Mar 3, 2016 1:45 PM

And after that he went to get his gun…..

  105. kayler2425 says: Mar 3, 2016 1:52 PM

I mean dude that was shot and accused Harrison two years later got shot and killed in another state if that says anything

  106. jerry944 says: Mar 3, 2016 2:06 PM

A guy was murdered at a car wash owned by Harrison..the guy was shot by a gun that at the time were only 4 or 5 known to be in tjis country and one was owned by Harrison..this murderer has no room to talk

    Harrison AND Dungey NOT HOF

  108. scorpio516 says: Mar 3, 2016 2:20 PM

T.O., for the love of god, stay out of North Philly!

Not that you were too welcome in Philly as it was..

  109. wallabear says: Mar 3, 2016 2:49 PM

He (Harrison) Who Has Not The Numbers Should Keep Quiet. OchoUno (T.O.) is Top 5 across-the-board. Yo! If Mariucci/’49ers Camp had not messed up (by not drafting Tom Brady), then WHO KNOWS how OchoUno’s numbers (stats) would have amounted to. Harrison, just shut up, second-hand panny.

I wanna go to canton just to boo Marvin when he’s giving his induction speech. Scumbag.

  111. dalvar1001 says: Mar 3, 2016 3:28 PM

Go ahead TO say something and Marvin will cap you.

  112. Frum Slum says: Mar 3, 2016 4:33 PM

I thought Marv had more class than that. He went straight raw dog on T.O.

It’s going to be awkward next year when he has to hug T.O. and welcome him to the hall though.

  113. huggybear2014 says: Mar 3, 2016 4:46 PM

All the haters meeting up at pft for tea, I see.

  114. imthedudedude says: Mar 3, 2016 5:15 PM

Shut up Marvin, you killed a guy.

  115. jgedgar70 says: Mar 3, 2016 5:15 PM

It’s about time somebody told TO off.

Everyone who thinks Cam Newton is a narcissistic jerk, I give you Terrell Owens. Cam is Mother Teresa in comparison.

  116. seagram757 says: Mar 3, 2016 6:01 PM

    Handgun Harrison has spoken…

  117. traptses says: Mar 3, 2016 6:44 PM

Oh, shots fired!! Get it? Shots fired? Cause, you know, Marvin killed a guy and all?

  118. igotsanduskied says: Mar 3, 2016 6:44 PM

Was Harrison ever at any point considered the best receiver in football? For years it was TO and Moss, then everybody else. Fact is, Harrison was never the force that Owens was. Defenses wee scared to death trying to stop him, and he did it with every quarterback he ever played with. Harrison played with Manning, who even managed to get 10 TDs out of Brandon Stokley one year.

  119. xavier179 says: Mar 3, 2016 8:07 PM

    You aren’t a 1/3 a player that Owens was.

  120. tytututytyi says: Mar 4, 2016 6:24 AM

Thank you for your feedback. We will look into it.

  121. 1historian says: Mar 4, 2016 8:12 AM

Harrison came to work, did his job and went home without feeling that he had to shoot his mouth off on every occasion.

T.O would shoot his mouth off every time he could.

Harrison finally got tired of it, and his finally speaking up is his way of saying to T.O – “I’m in the hall and you’re not.”

  122. rex2020 says: Mar 4, 2016 12:41 PM

Wow did not know how Marvin was off the field! As far as jerks must take one to know one then. TO was not a hall of fame teammate by far, but he was one of the most dangerous on the field ever. You can’t deny that. If you want saints or goodie good guys in the Hall….you better shut the doors. I’ll bet half of the guys in the hall that are still alive or have thier wits about them are glad social media was not around when they played.

Ask yourself if your team had a choice of who to face on sunday….Owens or Harrison? Who would you take? Peyton plays QB for both teams!
    lol

  123. slick3 says: Mar 4, 2016 2:46 PM

Looks like Harrison was trying to ” wound” T.O.
