The Ravens parted ways with veteran linebacker Daryl Smith yesterday, but he might not be gone long.
Via Bo Smolka of CSNMidatlantc.com, Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome said there’s a path for Smith to return.
“While we are releasing Daryl, we are not closing the door on the possibility of him returning to the Ravens,” Newsome said. “With ‘Buck,’ you’re talking about one of the NFL’s highest-quality people. We have been fortunate to have him with the Ravens, and his production has been outstanding.”
The soon-to-be-34-year-old linebacker should still have some degree of interest, and Newsome said he “deserves an opportunity to see his market value at this time.”
For the Ravens, it meant clearing $2.6 million in cap room at a time when they’re trying to improve their offensive line. But the Ravens have brought back veterans after cutting them before (like Chris Canty last year), so it’s possible that Smith will be back.
