Officially, the Los Angeles Police Department isn’t saying much about the knife found on property owned by Hall of Famer O.J. Simpson. Unofficially, someone with the LAPD is talking.

NBC News reports, citing multiple law enforcement sources, reports that the knife is “inconsistent” with the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

Per the report, the knife was found 12 years ago. A construction worker gave it to a retired police officer who was working on a nearby film shoot.

Forensic testing will still be performed on the knife to conclusively rule out its involvement in the 22-year-old killings.

And so this temporary blip in the news cycle will serve no real purpose other than to give some midseason publicity to the FX series devoted to the O.J. Simpson case.
