Mario Williams visiting the Dolphins today

Ryan Tannehill, Mario Williams AP

One of the potential big moves in free agency could be happening before free agency opens.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, former Bills defensive end Mario Williams is visiting the Dolphins today.

There figures to be competition for the 31-year-old pass-rusher, despite his drop-off in production last year. It’s easy to justify that as his being a bad scheme fit for the Bills under Rex Ryan, but there were also questions about his effort. He had 5.0 sacks last season after three straight double-digit sack seasons for the Bills, with 38.0 in his first three seasons there.

The Dolphins could just be looking for cover for transition-tagged Olivier Vernon getting an offer sheet they don’t want to match, but either way, they’re looking at a significant investment in their defensive line for the second straight offseason after signing Ndamukong Suh last offseason.

Great Teams Draft Instead of Spending Big Money in FA..Miami will learn that hopefully 1 day.

He’s a beast when his head is right and motivated. I don’t like this as a Bills fan but it’s our own fault.

  3. jets4thewin says: Mar 5, 2016 10:18 AM

Throw more money at that defensive line and hope it fixes your offense.

  4. buffalowned says: Mar 5, 2016 10:18 AM

It was pretty disappointing to watch him completely give up last year after 3 really good seasons in Buffalo. He’s always been a guy that takes plays off but before last year he’d still put forth enough effort to be an impact player. He’s still talented but last year he was a liability. Whoever signs him better hope he gets along with the defensive coordinator.

  5. mjkegs says: Mar 5, 2016 10:19 AM

    How can they afford this?

  6. FinFan68 says: Mar 5, 2016 10:27 AM

There are two kinds of players I do not want the Dolphins to sign. 1) Dumb players. (Those that can’t learn or fail to control emotions and commit costly penalties) 2) Players who fail to give the proper effort because they are either lazy or do not feel like they are the focal point.

Although Williams has talent I do believe he falls into at least one of those categories. Pass.

Jared Allen just retired from Cam-rolina. That’s your in-road to a Top 5 team, Mr. Williams.

  10. boknowsvt says: Mar 5, 2016 10:33 AM

The Dolphins huh? This guy is intent on destroying the rest of his career.

  11. guvsta says: Mar 5, 2016 10:35 AM

If he’s cheaper than Vernon then I think we should do it, as long as it isn’t structured in such a way that were in cap hell. 3 years for $30-35m would be OK.

  12. mcjon22 says: Mar 5, 2016 10:36 AM

This is just as much a message to Vernon and Wake (who they want to take a pay cut) as it is about signing him IMO.

Also, considering he’s coming off the worst season in his career because he was being used in a 3-4 system, his asking price wouldn’t break the bank.

He’d probably be in the 6-7 million range. Much cheaper than OV’s $12.7 mil and Wakes $9.8 mil.

He must not like winning, you’d think after years in Houston and Buffalo, playing for a winning team would be at the top of his to do list

  16. irkjames says: Mar 5, 2016 11:01 AM

Williams and Wake play the same side. If they sign him, chances are Wake is gone.

  18. mongo3401 says: Mar 5, 2016 11:11 AM

Miami would get more production out of wake on one leg then what Mario will give.

  19. ampats says: Mar 5, 2016 11:19 AM

It’s great to see the Dolphins going for a repeat as back to back off-season free agent champions.

that is the only championship the Dolphins have seen since the 70’s.

  20. nhpats says: Mar 5, 2016 11:27 AM

For those claiming he “gave up” as yourselves this: “How could the guy seriously want to play in Buffalo last season with the Rex Ryan sideshow act”….

  21. lingsun54 says: Mar 5, 2016 11:30 AM

Every year there are players left by the dumpster for a reason. Guys who can’t play anymore or don’t want to work on the football field anymore. There’s always some team dumb enough and/or desperate enough to take a chance on them. How often does it work out? Not very often.

  22. realdealsteel says: Mar 5, 2016 11:31 AM

Mami is the new Washington Redskins of free agency. LOL.

  23. drudema says: Mar 5, 2016 11:32 AM

Perfect. I can’t think of a more Tannenbaum-y type of a move than this. I can see him running into Ross’s office now. Tongue dangling out of the side of his mouth, jumping up on the couch,”Did you see!. Did you see what I did! We got him even cheaper than Suh! Every body is going to be talking about us!” Ross then hand feeds him a treat. “Good boy. Thats a good boy. We need people to come fill out our new/old stadium.”

I’m gonna go take a nap. Wake me when Ross is dead and someone else owns the team.

  24. lingsun54 says: Mar 5, 2016 11:34 AM

Suh was a beast in Detroit. How well did he work out in Miami?

  25. faepernick says: Mar 5, 2016 11:54 AM

People who say great teams draft instead of spending in FA, please see the Denver Broncos roster. Manning, Sanders, Talib etc all FA signings.

  26. bassplucker says: Mar 5, 2016 11:58 AM

Suh and Mario Williams on the same D line “should” be devastating but somehow I don’t see it playing out that way.

  27. annes22 says: Mar 5, 2016 11:59 AM

Suh is working out just fine, worry about your own pathetic team.

  31. baldbuc says: Mar 5, 2016 12:38 PM

The Bucs could use this guy also and have the room to spend.

  32. mjd08501 says: Mar 5, 2016 12:53 PM

He obviously wasn’t the perfect fit for rex’s defense but for all that he complained about dropping into coverage he only did it 28 times the whole season, which is less than twice a game. Heck, Von Miller and Demarcus Ware drop into coverage that frequently and they seem to handle it just fine and still rush the passer well. Mario is a quitter who will pack it in when he isn’t getting exactly what he wants and has even lost a bit of quickness as well

  33. silverhornet says: Mar 5, 2016 12:58 PM

If Bills fans don’t want him to go to Miami, well, that tells me all I need to know. He’ll certainly be motivated to play against them. Not sure how cap friendly this potential deal may be, but I’m interested.

Careful what you pray for, you just might get it. I suspected Miami would talk to him. Based on all the comments from fans of teams within the division, they’re concerned it might happen. He’ll be back to his former self in an attacking 4-3, so they have reason for concern.

  46. jchipwood says: Mar 5, 2016 1:39 PM

Cut Dion Jordan and there’s the money you need to sign him. If Vernon gets picked up you have another 12 mil and a starter already in place.

  47. igotgamenj says: Mar 5, 2016 1:41 PM

Going from Buffalo to South Beach he might take 5 million.. he’s already rich and no state tax in FL

  48. mongo3401 says: Mar 5, 2016 1:51 PM

I know many Miami fans are excited about the possibility but please remember this. Buyer Beware. Non fit for a particular defense is bunk. Video proved he was just dogging it. Now, did he want to get out of Buffalo? Only Mario can tell the true answer. But this bs they dropped him in coverage? Again, bunk. A lot of players who played in the same technique dropped into coverage 2. 3. And 4 times as much as Mario did. Just beware is all I am saying on fans expectations

  49. bakeberryjam says: Mar 5, 2016 1:56 PM

As others have said, this is a message to OV/Wake, Miami’s FO is looking at options. I also think it’s a message that the D-Line will not be set-in-stone around Suh, and money needs to be freed up so the LB and CB corps can get better.

Re-sign Shelby, and sign a cheaper DE than OV/Wake, and use the money you save to boost the other units — the line might not be as good, but the defense will improve as a whole.

Sorry, but it’s not bunk. Putting a 6’6″ 292 lb man in coverage when his strength is hand in the dirt, off the edge, get after the QB, something he’s proven extremely successful at, is bunk. Even as a DE in the 3-4, you basically take up double teams. Ryan failed to execute coach rule 101, fit your scheme to the players on your team. You and everyone else know wherever he goes, he will be out to prove Ryan and the bills fans wrong.

Wow..must be fun to inow so much about the Dolphins. Most of you clowns couldn’t name 5 players on the team. They might lose Vernon, Wale may not be up to it, Jordan is a Pothead…. If all of them left the Dolphins have about $24M to spend. Oh and ladt I checked most Defenses need a few Defensive Ends. Carry on mediocre High School Football Stars (if that).

  65. fanofpft says: Mar 5, 2016 6:51 PM

Looking at his overall stats it doesn’t look that far off factoring in not fitting the system. He has had double digit sacks half of his seasons.

The guy he might potentially replace Vernon did it one season when they played him more inside. However he is being touted as an edge player.
