The Texans might have a different kicker and/or punter during the 2016 season, but a new arrival would have to beat out the incumbent to get a job.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the team has re-signed kicker Nick Novak and punter Shane Lechler to one-year contracts. Both players were set to become free agents on Wednesday.

Novak signed with the Texans after Randy Bullock’s rocky start to the season got him dropped and went on to make 18-of-21 field goals -- he made all his tries inside 50 yards -- and 29-of-31 extra points. Novak, who turns 35 in August, spent the previous four seasons with the Chargers.

Lechler said recently that he believes the Texans can win a Super Bowl, something he called his “main goal” at this point in his career. Lechler is heading into his 17th NFL season and his fourth with the Texans after starting his career with the Raiders. He had a net of 38.8 yards per kick last season.
