Donald Stephenson is staying in the AFC West, but heading to Denver.

Stephenson, an offensive tackle who has spent his entire four-year career in Kansas City, is planning to sign with the Broncos tomorrow. Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star reports that the deal should get done tomorrow, the first official day of free agency.

The 27-year-old Stephenson played in all 16 games for the Chiefs last year and started seven. He’s likely to start for the Broncos next year.

Now Denver needs to figure out whether it has a quarterback for Stephenson to protect: Peyton Manning is retired, and Brock Osweiler officially becomes a free agent tomorrow.

  1. Drama Don is a good player… when he wants to be. He’ll bust a hump and play his ass off to win a starting job, but once he gets it he starts to slack off and lose focus. Talented, but has an inflated sense of his own ability. Getting away from his family and friends here in KC might be the best thing that could happen to him….

  2. As a Chiefs fan, knowing our o-line isn’t that great to begin with, I’m fine with this. We can do better with what’s on the roster already.

He just never really got it. When you get beat out by Jah Reid, you’re seriously lacking.

  3. He was serviceable. Played both tackle spots and a little guard. As a Chiefs fan, his claim to fame is being drafted one spot in FRONT of Russell Wilson.

  4. During his rookie year Stephenson filled in admirably for Branden Albert, when the latter was injured. But that was the Brian Daboll vanilla offense.

He’s never been able to stay in the starting rotation for very long for Reid’s much more in-depth offense.

Good swing tackle, when he’s not juicing. I’m glad he’s going to Denver, where he won’t be able to stop Houston, Ford or Hali from putting whichever rookie Denver fields @ QB… And yeah, I’m counting Brock Icewater as a rookie.

Congrats on your SB win Denver… you won’t sniff the playoffs for the next decade. Especially signing competitors 2nd stringers to be your starters.

Good job, Mr Executive of the Year. lol

  5. Not hurt at all by this signing. Stephenson is a big strong man, who just couldn’t quite make an impact along our O-line. He was somewhat clumsy; (causing C.West to fumble at Minnesota, and falling down on a chip shot field goal against the Bears which was blocked).
Jeff Allen’s departure will hurt more, if he goes.
    Please keep him!!!

  6. Decent run blocker but below average in pass protection. Probably best suited as the 6th lineman/swing tackle.

  7. Donald is KC born and bred, but now he is just a dirt bronco. He showed flashes of being a good player, but always failed. Inconsistent. We tried to hand him the starting left tackle job last year and he peed his pants. I;m glad he is going to Denver where we can smoke him twice a year.
