Bruce Irvin is headed to Oakland, not #asexpected

Getty Images

The Seahawks had come to realize Bruce Irvin was leaving.

But not many people saw where he was heading.

Per multiple reports, the Seahawks linebacker will sign with the Raiders when the league year opens tomorrow.

The Cardinals, Jaguars and Falcons had been mentioned as possibilities, but Oakland is apparently using its massive cap stockpile to add big names on both sides of the ball.

They’ve reportedly agreed to a mammoth deal with Ravens offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele as well, and have more money to spend.

    Oakland’s defense just got better.

Good moves by Oakland. They’re in the hunt for the playoffs.

Keep it going Rzeggie…loving it…Reunited with Ken Norton….connect the dots….now how about a Free Safety…Weedle for 5 mill per, or how about McLeod

  4. flybono24 says: Mar 8, 2016 9:15 PM

I wasn’t expecting this at all.
He was on my wish list for the Raiders but I thought it was just a pipe dream, looking good so far!!

Now to sign a stud RB (Doug Martin) and starting CB (Sean Smith)

  5. jgreiner9 says: Mar 8, 2016 9:17 PM

Oakland already has a pretty good running back

  6. scmems07 says: Mar 8, 2016 9:17 PM

Wow, pairing this kid with Mack, that’s a helluva pass rush they got there.

  7. therealraider says: Mar 8, 2016 9:18 PM

Ken Norton Jr. has now recruited 2 starting caliber LBs from the Seahawks since he became our D.C .. Way to go Kenny!

  8. coachglove says: Mar 8, 2016 9:20 PM

Wait…and they get Aldon Smith back in November? Lulz. Bet Osweiller signs out if the AFCW.

  9. jessethegreat says: Mar 8, 2016 9:20 PM

If carr progresses next year even 1/2 of what he did this past year the Raiders will have that division locked down by the end of November next season.

    They will still be sorry.

I’m a Vikings fan but I was cheering for the raiders as well last year and I’m excited for the franchise. They will win the afc west this year.

NOICE! If they land Weddle and Sean Smith, that’ll be a MONSTER free agency period for this team……even if they don’t another player at all.

  14. allidoiswin55 says: Mar 8, 2016 9:25 PM

Great signing for Oakland having two young freakish athletes who can flat out fly will be amazing.. Seahawks former lb coach did wonders last year with mack in his first year as defensive coordinator. It took Seattle a while for Seattle to adjust to losing soo much coaching bc of guys like Norton. Happy for Bruce and I’ll root for the raiders with so many former hawks on their squad..

    Go hawks!

  15. isaiah007 says: Mar 8, 2016 9:27 PM

This is a whole different organization. Building through the draft the way it should be done, now adding solid Free Agents, to push them into serious playoff discussion! Props to the future Oakland. Now just build them that stadium

  16. warrensip says: Mar 8, 2016 9:29 PM

Anyone with the Seahawks defense recently can be linked to the Raiders, Ken Norton Jr seems well respected by his players.

  17. bleedingfacemask says: Mar 8, 2016 9:35 PM

Peyton is done, the Broncos are losing a few key players, and they still don’t have a starting QB signed. Plus their cap situation isn’t great. Chiefs are solid, not yet making many splashy moves. Chargers have re-signed only one of their 15 impending free agents so far, and they dropped Weddle.

With all that cap money to spend, Raiders might own the AFC West this season…if they choose wisely which players to pay, of course. They’ve made a couple of good moves so far.

Just hope nobody will jinx it with a “dream team” comment…

  24. sonicdog71 says: Mar 8, 2016 9:47 PM

Going to play with his old linebacker coach who he loved. Ken Norton Jr.

  25. mdobrasz says: Mar 8, 2016 9:52 PM

Raiders will have some “walk off” wins with sacks and interceptions in the final seconds/minutes of the game. If they can find a way to add Sean Smithand/or Weddle, and maybe even Olivier Vernon they’ll have a vastly improved defense. Add to that the guys they add in the draft and you have the potential for a highly potent offense, with a VERY good defense (possibly elite, if things go well).

The AFC West teams HAVE to be nervous with what the Raiders have built the past 2-3 yrs.

  28. hillbillyjim says: Mar 8, 2016 9:54 PM

Ha! Week 2 2014 Seattle stopped the Chargers 8 yards short of a first down on a critical drive except Irvin decided to shove Rivers after he was 5 yards out of bounds. At that point I told my friends that he’s a typical Raider.

  29. blownaudio says: Mar 8, 2016 9:55 PM

He should pair up nicely with Khalil Mack.

As a Seahawks fan it’s sad to see him go. I expect the Raiders to be the frontrunner to take the AFC West this upcoming season.

  34. codythao35 says: Mar 8, 2016 10:09 PM

Keep it real, teams who splashed in FA never win big games. They’re only for talk show. Keep your money flowing Raiders, bc you’re not going anywhere. Especially with that coaching staff, makes me giggle.

  35. philvil41 says: Mar 8, 2016 10:12 PM

Raiders are almost there…. Just watch. The only Nation will rise

  36. codythao35 says: Mar 8, 2016 10:13 PM

Let me know again next year how the Raiders season go. 7-9 still awful with Carr and Jack’s coaching staff.

  37. bullogne says: Mar 8, 2016 10:15 PM

Del Rio doesn’t know what to do with any talent.
All you need to know is Del Rio had essentially the same D talent when he was in Denver as Wade Phillips had this season. The difference in play was massive!

  38. codythao35 says: Mar 8, 2016 10:17 PM

Let me know again next year how the Raiders season go. 7-9 still awful with Carr and Jack’s coaching staff. I don’t feel Jack and Carr have what it takes to win big games. They will always make stupid crucial mistakes to cause games. I’m just being real here, just watch and mark my word.

  39. absodefinitely says: Mar 8, 2016 10:17 PM

Solid moves for the Raiders, always nice to see a team that has been down start to rise up. Carr and Cooper is a pretty nasty combo on offense and Mack with Irvin looks beastly. Props to their front office.

Ware and Miller both had better statistical seasons (in every category) with Del Rio coaching. That’s only two pieces of a hugely dominant defense but your point is spurious at best.

  44. rodgers4mvps says: Mar 8, 2016 10:40 PM

I remember a year or so ago when many Raiders fans on this site were growing impatient with Reggie. The team and cap situation were a mess and he basically had to start over from scratch. Just goes to show that you can’t just throw money at a bunch of people and hope it works out. A couple good drafts with young, long term talent have allowed for free agents like Irvin to come in and make this a very dangerous team going forward. Nice job Raiders and congrats on doing it the right way.

  45. ashhole420 says: Mar 8, 2016 10:49 PM

The Raiders are def a very young team with lots of players about to hit primes , they could be very very good the next fews years with that kind of cap space.

To Bad that they will end up moving to Portland, Oregon in 2017 #OregonRaiders2017

  46. raidercurt says: Mar 8, 2016 11:00 PM

Signing Irvin is a great signing. I hope the Raiders go out and sign WR Travis Benjamin. With Cooper, Crabtree and Benjamin they’d have a ton of WR firepower. TE Wolford and RB Murray round out solid offensive weapons. Sign the muscle hamster and RB position has a solid 1, 2 punch. Go Raiders!

    Spot on!!!

It’s the truth! How can anyone give a thumbs down to that fact?

Yes Oakland got a whole lot better today….. But the history says their coach will hold them back. I give it another year before Raiders fans are calling for Jacks head. Shoulda kept Hue Jackson… Just sayin

  48. papatoad says: Mar 8, 2016 11:58 PM

Raiders will be relevant again. They are putting together a very, very good roster! Good for them. Look for them to be competitive possibly to the AFC CHAMPIONSHIP this year although don’t think they can go all the way yet!

  49. blackbeard43 says: Mar 9, 2016 12:10 AM

All well and good. Won’t believe it until they start winning the damn games, and they reach the playoffs!

  50. Central Cali Chiefs says: Mar 9, 2016 12:20 AM

Once again , the raiders are the off-season champs!!!
Every year it’s the same song and dance. Wake me when you guys can somehow win more the eight games in a season; (14 years with no winning record), then we can talk AFC WEST supremacy. Learn to crawl before you can Sprint.
I love me some Derrick Carr, but why did he have to be drafted, by these constant upstarts?

  51. pdway says: Mar 9, 2016 12:36 AM

no way the Hawks could match that money – we’ll miss him.

never became a great pass rusher, but he’s a very solid player, fast, above-average in pass coverage, and plays hard.

tough to keep a team together in the cap era. good signing for the Raiders.

  52. xraider4321 says: Mar 9, 2016 1:53 AM

I am so pumped right now, these are some huge names reggie has signed. My number 1 free agent I wanted was kelechi osemele and reggie made it happen, and he goes and signs Bruce Irvin a total suprise to many including my self! Free agency has just started and reggie has hit to home runs! Rumors are that janoris jenkins is next on reggies hit list! Thank you reggie, love what your doing keep up the great work! JUST WIN BABY!

Just like they said the last 4 years. . .

  56. purpleguy says: Mar 9, 2016 12:18 PM

Congrats to the Raiders for adding two pretty nice pieces. That pass rush could be pretty good next year.

  57. thebirdofprey says: Mar 9, 2016 12:25 PM

Ken Norton Jr. got a solid stud linebacker to pair up with his up and coming superstar he already has.

Bruce Irvin will get 10 sacks this year but that’s not all he will do for a team. Can play coverage on TE/HB and holds his own against the run. Brucccccceeeeeeee!

  58. warrensip says: Mar 9, 2016 1:04 PM

And to top it off RM once again rolled all the money into next season. If this doesn’t work out it was a one season 12mil flier.

  59. badmoonrison says: Mar 9, 2016 1:19 PM

I love it. Smart moves on the front offices part. Say what you want about the Raiders but at least we genuinely try to improve each year and spend money, not like a lot of teams I wont name. I dont have the time. Now go get some secondary help, another running back and we’re good. Oh plus resign Penn. Havent felt this optimistic in a while.

  60. skawh says: Mar 11, 2016 8:46 AM

I’m hope he is better in Oakland. In Seattle he never reached his potential. Nice speed, but tackles and sacks are ordinary. And mentally he’s a big question mark, as evidenced by his many defensive off sides, and hitting out of bounds. Im happy he’s gone.
