DeMarco Murray’s new deal has $25.5 million base, $33 million maximum value

DeMarco Murray AP

As expected, running back DeMarco Murray will be revising his contract in connection with his looming trade to the Titans. Given the terms of the Eagles deal that Murray struggled (for a variety of reasons) to justify in 2015, Murray will end up with a solid package in Tennessee.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the revised four-year deal has a base value of $25.5 million, with $12.5 million guaranteed. Of that amount, $6 million is fully guaranteed in 2016, and $3 million is fully guaranteed in 2017. The remaining $3.25 million is guaranteed money is guaranteed for injury only at signing, and it converts to a full guarantee on the fifth day of the 2017 league year.

Incentives could push the deal to a maximum value of $33 million. That’s a healthy increase in the $1.5 million in remaining available escalators in Murray’s prior contract.

Murray was due to make $7 million this year, $8 million in 2017, $8 million in 2018, and $8 million in 2019, a four-year base package of $31 million.

He actually has more guaranteed money remaining than he did in Philly, where the full guarantee was $7 million this year, $2 million next year, and $3 million on the third day of the 2017 league year. He’ll also have a chance to make up the difference on the base package through the various available incentive payments.

Murray leaves Philadelphia with $9 million that he earned for one season in 2015. It’s still not known what the Titans will be sending to the Eagles, but the haul should at least include a fruit basket, given that the Eagles escaped responsibility for another $9 million in fully guaranteed money.

    Guh…. What?

Not many key players remaining from Chip Kelly’s Reign of Error.

  3. thegonz13 says: Mar 8, 2016 6:57 PM

OK, so let me get this straight. Murray signed a four-year deal to play in Philly. Now, with three years left on that contract, he signs a new one with more money because he gets traded to Nashville?

What the hell kind of screwed up world is this?

  4. jam11163 says: Mar 8, 2016 6:58 PM

    Thank you Tennessee.

  5. A.S. Riley says: Mar 8, 2016 6:59 PM

Not a bad guaranteed sum for the Titans. Murray should work well in a 1-cut offense and Mularkey runs a lot of two-tight-end sets.

are we talking a late round fruit basket?

Why even call the money guaranteed, when it is quite literally not guaranteed.

  10. jmc8888 says: Mar 8, 2016 7:02 PM

Not that good of a deal for the Titans. They get a little protection by lowering the floor of the deal, while perhaps giving more overall if Murray does well.

On the whole, for a struggling team that needs to add talent it’s understandable.

But he was a free agent last season and now they did this deal and have to give up compensation. Maybe overall that’s the price the Titans needed to pay to get someone to go there. How much that price was is still up in the air. Hopefully for the Titans sake it wasn’t too much. A 6th or 7th round pick would be fair.

If they gave up a 3rd or 4th that would be pretty bad. A 5th probably understandable.

  11. petersjeffrey36 says: Mar 8, 2016 7:05 PM

umm so i see no justification for the new deal.. what leverage did he have to force an extra year with a couple million on top of it??? that doesnt even take performance into the process. I for one think hell bounce back as long as they arent running plays out of the shotgun (which most running backs fail at), but still cant see the reasoning for this

Chip Kelly. Pretty good coach. Extremely awful GM. The first indication of how clueless a GM he was was his first big move….cutting Desean Jackson. Even if you didn’t want Jackson at the very least, the very least you owed it to your team try and get something in return for Jackson who was coming off a 1300+ yard receiving season. Out of all his moves that to me was by far the most jaw dropping. After that it was all down hill from here. If the guy would have just stuck to coaching and left his pieces in place while picking up talent through the draft and free agency the Eagles very likely would have won the NFC East this past season.

  15. fanboyarmy says: Mar 8, 2016 7:11 PM

Game changer. Titans poised to win 4 games this season. Snore.

  16. daysend564 says: Mar 8, 2016 7:13 PM

And now he’s another year older. Why would they want to add another year.

Tennessee just can’t get out of their own way.

So Skins fans still want to know if these trades are going to blow up the Eagles Cap or if all these changes now have freed the dead money? None of this has been explained… guess I have to go find an Eagles dirty bird blog and see what the deal is.

  19. realtruthteller100 says: Mar 8, 2016 7:17 PM

imo he should retire and give the money to a rb with some more grit like a woodhead or a gerhart

  20. arwiv says: Mar 8, 2016 7:18 PM

Good for DM to get away from that sinking ship. The eagles have Bradford at QB…..whats the point of even playing the games?

  21. paychrisjohnson28 says: Mar 8, 2016 7:30 PM

Until you have all the facts don’t report it, especially whe it comes to Guaranteed money.

I want to know what the Titans gave up to get Demarco Murray and I hope and pray he is not washed up…

Remember when Eddie George carried over 400 times in a season?

He was never the same after that…
I pray it’s not the same in this case…

I just want the Titans to be competitive year in year out… 8-8 at worst is what I hope for…

Hopefully the Titans have Mariota line up primarily under center next season to take advantage of DM’s abilities. He may be leaving Chip Kelly’s system but he’ll be playing with Chip Kelly’s QB.

  26. thisonesforpat says: Mar 8, 2016 7:35 PM

OK, being a Bronco fan, I’m biased. But CJ Anderson made $1.6 million last year and this year and I think the Broncos are willing to let him walk after that. Hell, a little pep talk from Terrell and he got you 90 freaking yards in the Super Bowl! After that, fresh meat.

Is CJ Anderson DeMarco Murray? No, of course not but DeMarco Murray was a lot more valuable to his teams when he was making less…a lot less. The Adrian Peterson contracts, I thought, ended with AP. Apparently not. This is not where a smart team puts money

This is a horrible horrible HORRIBLE move. For any team.

  27. jaredc360 says: Mar 8, 2016 7:52 PM

I love these myths the Murray is great under center and can’t play in the shotgun. Keep making up “facts” to make yourselves feel better that your squad just took a broken down cancer from Philly and then gave him MORE money on top!! BTW- Murray averaged an EXTRA yard per carry out of the SHOTGUN! Keep trying to convince yourselves that this is somehow a “good move” for Tennessee. And Demarco keeps laughing all the way to the bank off 1 good season…

  28. tennesseetitan78 says: Mar 8, 2016 7:52 PM

Eagles fans aren’t laughing. They are genuinely thankful that Tennessee made this trade (and Miami made their trade as well). Regardless of what the Eagles get back, fans are happy to be done with those contracts.

And, MOST Eagles fans realize Bradford is awful. But, keeping one bad player doesn’t make us less excited about getting rid of 3 bums.

  31. dunc89 says: Mar 8, 2016 8:11 PM

The Titans have lots of cap space and not a lot of talent. Adding DeMarco Murray makes them a better team. Money doesn’t matter here, there is lots to spend. What matters is what they gave up to get him.

What a turnabout! Last year all you of eagle fans were praising “Chips Ahoy” for signing him. It was not DM’s fault for his production, it was the college scheme that did not work. DM is a class act, period.
BTW, good luck with the fire sale!

  34. urbanlegend5138 says: Mar 8, 2016 8:22 PM

As bad as you guys think Murray is, trust me our current RB corps is infinitely worse. The only other RB on the market worth a damn is Doug Martin and seeing as he’s looking to break the bank Demarco is a much better option for us.

Say what you will but we picked up a guy who’s under 30 and was a pro bowler less than a year ago for a mere 4 mil guaranteed a year. That’s win.

For a steal actually. He has the 20th highest salary amongst quarterbacks. But how much is irrelevant, how long is the important question. Two years. Two years to find/draft a real starting quaterback. Good luck with your team.

Demarco Murray is DONE! Finito! Only one back in NFL history has ever returned to form after a 400 carry season – Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson. Greater backs than Murray have tried and failed. Jamaal Anderson, Terrell Davis, Eddie George. Tennessee will soon discover they threw good money after bad. Might be dumber than what Chip did last year. Good move by Philly getting out from under this disaster.

Let’s see who wins more games. Chip or Howie. It’s easy to whine about the guy who’s gone. If these traded guys play well next season the City will want to tar and feather Howie.

  42. travis1980 says: Mar 8, 2016 10:48 PM

I’m not saying this was a good deal for the Titans, but did anyone watch any Eagles games last year and see the amount of times Murray was hit in the backfield? Or the amount if stretch plays he ran with a one cut RB? I really don’t think Murray is that bad. I really wouldn’t be surprised to see him come back to form. I think alot of it was on Chip Kelly.

There is no doubt in my mind that Chip put him in position to fail. A lot of Eagles fans saw this and commented on it during the season. Not to mention giving a guy bell cow money and then state that you plan to use him as part of a rotation.

He has a chance to be a good running back for the Titans but not a great one and that is only if he can remain healthy.
