Ian Williams agrees to stay with 49ers

The 49ers saw defensive players leave in droves last offseason, but they’re holding onto a member of their starting defensive line this time around.

PFT has learned, via a league source, that nose tackle Ian Williams has agreed to a deal that will keep him in Santa Clara. It’s a five-year deal for the five-year veteran.

Williams, who was No. 28 on PFT’s list of the top 100 free agents, moved into the starting lineup in 2014, but a broken leg forced his season to end after nine games. He returned to start all 16 games for the Niners last season and picked up 65 tackles as a¬†bright spot in run defense during an otherwise bleak year for the team.

The 49ers have also extended defensive end Quinton Dial this offseason and Glenn Dorsey is under contract for 2016, so there will be continuity up front for the Niners despite the lack of it on the coaching staff. They’ll need to upgrade around the holdovers, but Williams was one of the players worth keeping around and the Niners accomplished that ahead of the official start of free agency.

Get back to me when we figure out what the heck we’re doing at QB. Defense wasn’t our problem.

Never understood why the Niners playing outside of San Francisco is such a big deal on here.

Teams not named the 49ers whose stadiums aren’t in the city they call home:

    Dallas Cowboys: Arlington
    Buffalo Bills: Orchard Park
    Washington Redskins: Landover, Maryland
    Miami Dolphins: Miami Gardens
New York Giants and Jets: East Rutherford, New Jersey
Green Bay Packers: Part of Lambeau Field is in Ashwaubenon
Tampa Bay Bucaneers: There’s no city called Tampa Bay

3-13, tops. Between Jed, Baalke, and now Chip Kelly, this downtrodden franchise has NO chance to break .500 anytime soon. Sad.

Surprised he wanted to stay. Okay well here’s my armchair GM wishlist:

Sign Danny Trevathan or James Laurenitis at ILB to shore up Bowman and draft either Myles Jack or Reggie Raggland to develop.

Sign Sean Smith as our #1 CB and Kelvin Beachum to bolster our O-line.

Draft Michael Thomas in the 2nd round to compete with DeAndre Smelter for the potential #3/4 WR spot.

Use remaining cash for FA and draft picks on the pass rush and O/D lines. You win in the trenches.

    That is all, GO NINERS!!!!!

Wow.. does he have a season ending injury we don’t know about? Because this makes way too much sense for our brain-dead front office to have gotten right..

The number 1 priority resign and the linch pin on the DL. Good signing for a guy who’s earned it! , now come on 49ers!!!! Time to address the offensive line big time! Need!
