NFL strips Chiefs of two draft picks for tampering with Jeremy Maclin

The Chiefs’ pursuit of wide receiver Jeremy Maclin in free agency last year has proven to be costly.

The NFL announced today that the Chiefs were found to have tampered with Maclin while he was still under contract with the Eagles. As a result, the Chiefs have been docked their third-round pick in this year’s draft and their sixth-round pick in next year’s draft. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was individually fined $75,000 and General Manager John Dorsey was fined $25,000, and the Chiefs as an organization were fined $250,000.

NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent imposed the penalty for improper contact with Maclin, who ended up leaving the Eagles and signing with the Chiefs.

Vincent said the Chiefs clearly violated league rules, although he noted that the punishment could have been more severe were it not for the fact that the Chiefs have never previously violated such a rule, and that the Chiefs fully cooperated with the league’s investigation. The Chiefs gave league staff “full access to all of the information requested, including electronic and telephone records, and unrestricted access to all club people whom we sought to interview,” an NFL statement said.

The Chiefs have five days to file their appeal.

Hey, what about the Jets and Revis tampering the Patriots?????????

  2. bassplucker says: Mar 9, 2016 5:45 PM

Ouch. So much for replacing Jeff Allen with that 3rd round pick, then.

  3. ninjapleazee says: Mar 9, 2016 5:46 PM

Reid should have pulled a Brady and destroyed his cell phone.

  4. Anonymous Banker says: Mar 9, 2016 5:46 PM

Hey Eagles, sorry that your player got tampered with, but you don’t get the Chief’s picks for damages.

    With love,
    The NFL

Way to throw yourself on the sword Chiefs……..Ya hear that Mr. Brady??

  6. schmedley69 says: Mar 9, 2016 5:47 PM

Shouldn’t the Eagles get those picks, since they were the one’s who were hurt by the Fat Man’s tampering?

  7. goodellisaclown says: Mar 9, 2016 5:48 PM

Wow! The Commish really gave KC the Greg Hardy treatment.

Glad the boys on Park Ave. are dealing with all the “important” issues in a timely and matter-of-fact manner.

  8. ampats says: Mar 9, 2016 5:49 PM

Good luck with your appeal when you appear before Fuehrer Goodell,

Judge, Jury & Executioner of the Park AveThird Reich

  11. Patskrieg says: Mar 9, 2016 5:49 PM

In fairness to the Kansas City Cheatfs (who are cheaters and should be shunned) consider the precedent in place for tampering.

The Jets were fined for tampering before the 2015 season and were fined $100K and no draft picks. Now, for an infraction in the exact same league year, the penalty magically increases to two picks and 3X the money.

  12. chawk12thman says: Mar 9, 2016 5:49 PM

The sorriest part of this is that it took this long to get done and penalty imposed…….very untimely…..

  13. footballboozer says: Mar 9, 2016 5:50 PM

If the Chiefs ever win a super bowl there will be an asterisk next to the win.
Remember, next time you get caught it will be a first round draft pick and your cheer leaders will be men.

  14. 1heatedtoombrayduh says: Mar 9, 2016 5:50 PM

WELP.. happy it happened to the chiefs, but It sounds kind o hypocritical when deals are announced during “the tampering” phase..its all stupid lol nfl for ya

  15. touchdownelvis says: Mar 9, 2016 5:50 PM

Ouch, and that’s for a first offense and all.

Makes one wonder how the Jets got off so lightly for their flagrant tampering with Darrelle Revis a year back – especially since unlike the Chiefs, they had a history of tampering.

  16. jbaxt says: Mar 9, 2016 5:50 PM

Go after the small market teams for punishment for what every team does. The NFL is a joke.

  17. jvw1982 says: Mar 9, 2016 5:51 PM

Should of pulled a Brady…..get caught cheating, don’t cooperate and destroy any cell phone records then cry to the media and take it to court to keep the NFL from punishing you….drag it out for yrs…..oh that’s right the chiefs have class never mind…….

  18. willynillyphilly says: Mar 9, 2016 5:51 PM

That’s BS the Eagles should get compensation

  19. goodellisaclown says: Mar 9, 2016 5:52 PM

What a joke. Not a Chiefs fan at all, but EVERY team tampers with free agents– the NFL does a horrible job with implementation and enforcement of these rules… and it’s just a matter of picking and choosing if/when they bother to enforce anything.

As someone else pointed out, if the league really cared about integrity, etc., not only would KC be punished, but the Eagles would receive some form of compensation as well.

Love how they occasionally pick a sitting duck to come down hard on in an effort to look tough, but avoid dealing with bigger issues.

  20. rhamrhoddy says: Mar 9, 2016 5:52 PM

I’m not convinced that Troy Vincent would even understand what a tampering charge is but at least NOW, Ginger Roger can hear the appeal.

  21. thewigglr says: Mar 9, 2016 5:53 PM

I’m shocked they didn’t take away more picks from the Pats for this.

  22. sportnik2 says: Mar 9, 2016 5:53 PM

    The world according to Goodell

Jets tamper with Pats: run to Jeff Pash’s office and share high fives and man hugs.

Any team other than the Jets tampers: Lay down the hammer to remind everyone that I am an all powerful diety

    #Integrity

  23. jbaxt says: Mar 9, 2016 5:53 PM

Didn’t Troy Vincent try to join KC after his Eagle days but KC offered him the league minimum?

Troy, you were done bro, get over it.

  24. gooboy6 says: Mar 9, 2016 5:55 PM

totally worth it, Maclin is a stud and we had to get him.

Id give up a first to make sure we got him

  25. kevpft says: Mar 9, 2016 5:55 PM

If there’s bafflingly inconsistent and weirdly-timed punishment being handed out, Troy Vincent must be involved.

  26. nenlain says: Mar 9, 2016 5:55 PM

That pick should goto the Eagles.

  27. tdubdizzle says: Mar 9, 2016 5:57 PM

  28. cross300 says: Mar 9, 2016 5:59 PM

Still waiting for the most obvious tampering case of the Jets and Derelle Revis. Funny how things never go against the Jets. Must be that most of the hq staff are former Jets execs. So much for integrity.

  29. tundey says: Mar 9, 2016 6:00 PM

2 quick comments: how dumb are the chiefs to get caught? Second, the chiefs essentially “stole” a player and they get to keep him? I bet lots of white collar criminals wish it was like that in the real world.

  32. summitmech says: Mar 9, 2016 6:04 PM

Wow that is some serious BS! I’m A Vikings fan so I have no bias in this issue, but if you’re going to fine the Chiefs, you have to fine EVERY team. All the NFL seems to do is make up scapegoats to make themselves look halfway legitimate. Every team tampers and no one’s been fined that hard.

  33. tylawspick6 says: Mar 9, 2016 6:09 PM

  35. jetsfan136 says: Mar 9, 2016 6:15 PM

I believe he Jets one was the owner making an off handed remark. Like, we’d love to have him. Tampering under he letter of the law, but really just the guy being a dummy. This was obviously three guys calling the player in question. Real tampering.

The difference between this and Revis is probably evidence. Andy probably got caught recruiting Maclin. Maybe it happened well before the 3 day period. Nobody knows so it’s pointless comparing it to the Revis situation.

  38. jeffberk2014 says: Mar 9, 2016 6:22 PM

What a bunch of bunk. You mean it one year to investigate? This league is a joke!

  39. birdbrainsnj says: Mar 9, 2016 6:23 PM

Eagles should get some kind of compensation. They lost him over a million bucks, would def be still in philly. Guy was a pro bowl first rounder we desperately needed. Should get a third.

  43. patriots123456 says: Mar 9, 2016 6:32 PM

KC has a staff member who calls himself the “tamperor” in tweets.

    So they must be guilty…

Evidence? What more evidence did you need, considering the team owner brought it all out in a press conference in the middle of the season… its a double standard for sure.

Funny thing – the Chiefs are playing the Jets this year… Coincidence? I think not. The Chiefs got ripped off by a league office filled by ex-Jet staffers.

  49. FinFan68 says: Mar 9, 2016 6:58 PM

    3 things here:

    1) that took way too long
    2) the punishment is more than for other teams
    3) there are still teams who were accused of tampering last year with no findings

This is the first day of free agency so the tampering period is basically over. If the league wanted to send a message they should have announced this a few weeks ago.

  50. whlskey says: Mar 9, 2016 6:58 PM

And just when I was finally starting to understand Legal Tampering, now they start throwing around this so-called “Illegal Tampering” term.. Wait, what’s a catch again..?

Reid should have pulled a Brady and destroyed his cell phone.
    —————
    1) By NFL rules, Reid had to hand over his phone, Brady didn’t.
    2) If you destroy a phone you don’t destroy the texts sent from it.
    3) Brady offered his phone logs at his appeal, which he said would prove that the league already had all the texts (they had every Pats’ staffer and ball guys’ phones already), but Goodell refused to look at it.

  52. ninjapleazee says: Mar 9, 2016 7:24 PM

    2. If you destroy your phone you don’t destroy the texts sent from it.

Smart answer. Too bad Brady didn’t think of that before smashing his.

  53. dsigrey says: Mar 9, 2016 7:34 PM

So the Jets do the same thing and pay 100k fine???? San Fran gets a big fine and draft picks taken away, the Cheifs get this and the Jets get Woody Johnson’s pocket change???? Wow that combo of former Jets employees in the NFL office and doing it to the Pats really pays off.

  54. kcflake says: Mar 9, 2016 7:34 PM

Talk about some crap. Troy Vincent is a moron. If this is the way things are being done, Ever Team in The League should lose a draft pick in the top 3 rounds.

  55. bencoates57 says: Mar 9, 2016 7:42 PM

And woody Johnson got away with a small fine for his blatant tampering with Revis.

  56. bobbyhoying says: Mar 9, 2016 7:52 PM

I thought losing Maclin was all Chip Kelly’s fault. How could K.C. possibly be to blame?

  57. iamapatsfan says: Mar 9, 2016 7:52 PM

Interesting that another team also tampered with a player and only got 100k fine and no draft picks lost.

    Funny how that works, hey?

    ———–
The only problem is that Brady didn’t get “caught”‘doing anything….and the league admitted as much in open court. I fact, there is not even any evidence any deflation actually occurred unless one wants to ignore both science and the memory of the ref who checked the inflation of the footballs.

No, this is merely more evidence of Goodell’s completely arbitrary judgement system. He must have a wheel or a dartboard he uses to dole out penalties.

  59. primemundo says: Mar 9, 2016 8:04 PM

That sucks. Well, at least they have a few more $$$ for free agents. 3rd rounder is a stinger. I hope the get that back with the appeal.

  60. tbf22 says: Mar 9, 2016 8:16 PM

Jets tampering: the owner is being interviewed and asked a question about Revis. Owner answers the question, saying he love Revis and would love to have him be a jet again. End of tampering.

Chiefs tampering: Andy Reid calling Maclin on his personal cell phone and having a conversation with him about joining the Chiefs.

    See the difference?

I don’t think the league asked Maclin for his personal cell phone – only records provided by the Chiefs, which is the same thing the Patriots provided.

And if they did ask Maclin for his personal cell phone, do you really think he would have just handed it over to Goodell?

  62. tomtravis76 says: Mar 9, 2016 8:51 PM

This is just more BS to come out of the league office so they can try and show everyone else cooperates in investigations.

  63. raideralex99 says: Mar 9, 2016 8:58 PM

That’s just BS every team does it.
All Andy had to do is tell one of his players to phone Maclin and then its ok.

  64. boogerhut says: Mar 9, 2016 9:08 PM

  65. gabe77 says: Mar 10, 2016 12:47 AM

Maybe the team that gets the short end of the tampering should receive the picks… That would make it more of a deterrent and a whole lot more interesting.
